I’m really sensitive to framerate drops, screen tearing, etc. I’ve been playing with my iPhone XR and I’m noticing in many games I’ve been playing, apps and actually some web pages that the iPhone 7 had a better or not framerate drops like the XR has.

Anyone else notice this?

The top framerate is the same. I’m talking about in many games that are in the top 100 games, there is noticeable frame rate drop.

Maybe I’ll have to wait for them to patch the games, it I would have thought the new processor and graphics card could have handled the screen resolution increase.

The GPU in the a12 is 50% faster over the a11 and that was already a significant improvement over the IT designed GPU found in the A10.

Keep in mind the A12 is the same GPU found in the iPhone XS / Max. I believe the XR is pushing less pixels compared to the XS or XS Max so performance should be potentially better assuming it hasn’t been throttled.

Games developed for the metal API should already be taking advantage of the enhancements found in the a12

Just a quick correction: GPU is not the same as CPU, but generally, I agree with you’re point.

What exactly are you correcting if we are talking about frametsres? The GPUs are an integrated part of the Apple designed CPUs. As I said above the GPUs found in the A12 and a11 were developed in-house, where the Power VR GPU found in the A10 was developed by Imagination Technologies.

Guys he’s not talking about the frame rate, but about frame drops, which are two different things.

A frame drop would still be a function of the GPU which in the X-RAY happens to be a beast when compared to that found in the A10... OP didn’t mention any specific software but I can say averythig I have played on my max has been a solid 60 FPS and there is no reason to suspect the XR should perform any different. If anything the XR has less pixels to fill.

It still would be somewhat strange if brightness had an effect like this.

It’s possible it’s a specific app. It can also be spotlight indexing as it is a new phone and it can often take several days for spotlight to co plate it’s background tasks. This will often tank performance and battery life in the first few days.
