Hopefully indie games like Job Simulator will be on there, that game’s fun.
I want to play The Sims using Apple AR/VR headset. I want to be in the game. No one should be able to mess with me.

The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple's annual developer and software-oriented conference, is now just a few days away. As with previous years, Apple is expected to introduce major updates to all of its operating systems, but unique to WWDC 2023, Apple is also very likely to unveil xrOS, the software that will run its much-rumored AR/VR mixed-reality headset. Here's everything we're expecting from it.

  • Apple has not publicly acknowledged the existence of its headset, but internal Apple sources have confirmed that the operating system will be called xrOS, and Apple has used hidden shell companies to trademark the name in various countries.
  • xrOS is meant to stand for "extended reality," hinting at the augmented and virtual reality functions at the heart of the head-mounted device. The backend capitalization also conforms to the naming conventions Apple has adopted for all of the operating systems in its ecosystem.
  • According to reporting by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple sees the headset as a device for gaming, watching streaming video, video conferencing, health and fitness, and interfacing with other people. Therefore xrOS will be focused on providing the best possible environment for delivering that content.
I love the way they continue to spin this. It's like a rumor supporting a another rumor that is supporting yet another rumor. :D

A couple thoughts…
The now defunct-Google Glass: An early example of an AR interface
As far as I know Google Glass was not AR. HUD yes, but not AR.
Apple is also said to be working on an in-air typing feature that is expected to be a bit rudimentary at launch, with Apple to make notable improvements over time.
Knowingly launching a still rudimentary feature, especially when that feature is something as important as typing, is bad.

I don't understand... Are you suggesting that Apple, one of the most successful companies in the world, with close to a billion customers, many repeat, is propelled to that level of success with yes men?
Obviously not! Internal criticism is vital to Apple’s success.

At least it'll have the feature... even if it is rudimentary.

Remember when people slammed the original iPhone for not having copy-and-paste... but then 3 years later Microsoft launched Windows Phone that didn't have copy-and paste?

I'd guess rudimentary typing is better than NO typing.

:p

If it really is $3k then you know how niche a market it's aiming itself towards and how many they expect to sell. It might be good, but it would be better if the price point meant a wider audience to encourage the development of apps.

I don't think it will be even close to $3K. It seems that *rumor*, going back at least a year, is clinged to by many in order to proclaim it a flop.

Can’t wait for five pages of comments about how it’s “DOA” and “nobody will buy this” when nobody has even seen the thing yet.
You just precisely described the MacRumors forums! Thank you! But you left out the additional 100 pages of the same thing if/when the product is announced and released. There has never been an Apple product release that wasn’t derided, condemned, declared DOA, dismissed, laughed at by the MacRumors forum commenters.

..gaming as a focus is highly unlikely. Even with Apple silicon gaming is still not really supported and especially constrained by the hardware. And I’m talking about “real” games, not e.g. Apple Arcade stuff. (Which ofc is fine for causal gaming…)

That game would be a good fit, and already has a version for hand-tracking. But the biggest issue is that the company that made it was bought by Google, and I don’t think Apple would want to promote Google software very prominently.
Even among VR enthusiasts, there is a ton of debate on which capabilities to prioritize, so there is no way to please everyone. Smartphones all look largely the same and have similar features, with a couple exceptions (FaceID). XR devices are quite widely varied, and there isn’t really a way to implement all the best features in a single device. For example, if you want a wide FOV, you have to use an opaque device. Transparent devices like HoloLens,
NReal, and Magic Leap all have tiny FOV compared to any VR set.

The only thing I could see myself using this for is if you can use it as external displays for your Mac. But it's not worth $3000 just to do that.

I agree. Any thoughts as to why that is? Perhaps it's age-related (and thus level of maturity)? Or???
