Hey guys,

I bought an XS Max in November from Verizon and I saw today that my back glass is cracked. I did not purchase any extended apple care plus but obviously I’m still under apple’s one year warranty. How much will I have to pay Apple to get the black glass replaced? I’m seeing a range of answers from $29 to $599.

Should I try to buy apple care plus extended before I take it in to the apple store?!

THANKS! Also if you have recommendations for toughest front screen tempered glass protectors, let me know!

You have 60 days to purchase AppleCare from the date you bought your phone. Without AppleCare, the cost will be $599 as they won’t replace the back glass, but give you a new/refurbished device. You’re better off adding AppleCare and then it’ll cost you $99 for a new phone. So the cost of adding AppleCare plus the deductible for a new phone will be about half the cost of replacing the phone with no warranty.

So you didn’t buy AppleCare+ before you broke the phone and now you want to buy it after you damaged it so you don’t have to pay full price replacement? If you rented a car and opted not to get the insurance coverage and got into an accident that was your fault would you call the rental company and try to add the insurance after the fact? Sounds unethical to me..

The price of glass on these phones is ridiculous to be honest. If I ever break the screen or back glass on my 8+ then it’s likely going to be a complete insurance write off. At £300+ it’s beyond the threshold for repair.

Unfortunately it's the dumb way Apple attached the camera bezel to the phone. If they wouldn't of attached it to the inside of the phone sandwiching the glass between it and the chassis you'd be able to fix it easily. It most likely would cost around $100 for Apple to replace it which would be much easier to swallow.

Most things produced these days are not designed for ease of, nor low cost of, repairs.

Efficient manufacturing and advanced design features normally do not lend themselves to Repairability.
