The pissed off-ed-ness of Apple towards Google is not because of their super search engine or their YouTube service. This is all because of Android and competition in the mobile arena.

Doesn't matter. Steve grew to hate Google, which is why he kicked off the stock YouTube app. and got rid of Google Maps. They're not going to help Google one bit in any way. And Google's search engine isn't that special. People just think it is.

Apple is now in a position to screw Google. They're the competition and the bulk of their business is based on accumulating user data through search. Once they lose the considerable iOS + Mac user base, they're going to be in trouble. I'm sure they'll survive but they will lose an edge.

I currently use Bing on my iPhone and Google on my Mac. But that's because I find that I make less and less searches from a search bar at all. I ask Siri most of my questions. Once Siri comes to the Mac, I'll use Google even less.

I admit that Google's brand has a search engine cachet to it but when you're using Bing via Siri, you don't think of who the source of the search is because you perceive it as coming from Siri. Let customers choose which they want but I imagine most iPhone users will just stick with what comes configured.

If Apple starts using Bing by default, they could just brand it as Siri (powered by Bing) and I'm sure Microsoft will take that deal — otherwise, Yahoo will.

As long as iCloud remembers my default choice, i'm fine with it. I just don't want to have to change my settings each time i get a new device.

It's really hard to believe, but Google's search engine has been online for 14 years! Yes, I was in line for the keynote address of Macworld SF outside the Moscone Center in January 2000, when somebody came down the line handing out flyers touting their "brand new" search engine. "Try out our new search engine, it''s better than Yahoo, Altavista, and Lycos...it's called GOOGLE!"

Yep. :)

God I hope they renew with google. I HATE yahoo they are worthless and bing search sucks. As much as I dislike google there isn't a better option

I'm not tied to Google, but last time I tried Yahoo and Bing (which was a good year ago) neither was as accurate or useful as Google to me. Plus, I hate how Yahoo opens selections in new tabs automatically and doesn't remember your preference unless you stay signed in to your Yahoo account.

Yahoo opens your search results in new tabs?

Desperate competition between Bing vs Yahoo? Great. Let them fight over who gets to provide the backend for Apple's Spotlight search bar built into all iPhones, iPads and Macs.

Searching in the Safari bar won't go to a website in the future, it'll open search results in a Spotlight UI right in the browser.

I miss the days of iOS like 4 when apple and google were friends. Apple made apps (the best) backed by google services (the best), it was the golden age

Hopefully apple just makes their own search engine thats actually good and calls it a day, cause bing isn't too bad but its not good either, and the only thing worse than bing is yahoo. As long as i can switch it back i guess i don't really care

<3 DuckDuckGo

I'd love to see Apple swap over to DDG when the contract with Google ends in 2015, and actually, I can easily see them doing that.

1 - DDG is one of the four options you're allowed to pick from in iOS 8 and Yosemite, so Apple is obviously aware of its existance.

2 - DDG is the only search engine that doesn't track you. What with Tim Cook's "They can cart us out in a box" or whatever, I think Apple could swap over to DDG, just to show how committed they are to user privacy.

And if users are free to swap over to using the other search engines, why not?

Plus, besides DDG's main claim to fame of not tracking you, I actually think it's the best search engine on account of !bangs and having the cleanest UI. The only time it ever falls short is when I'm doing image searches... I feel like Google Images normally returns exactly what I'm looking for whereas DDG's images are hit-or-miss.

3 words: Duck Duck Go

Maybe I need to tweak some settings or "learn" to search a bit better, but there are times when DDG is a little frustrating. Sometimes I'll look for some specific news or help with something and I see nothing but outdated articles come up. Or just other random times where the results are not really working for me.

So then I have to copy and paste my search into Google and can usually get what I need right away.

I'm being patient, still have DDG as my default, but I need to figure out how to get better at searching with DDG, if I'm the problem.

You can always go into the Settings and switch to the provider of your choice. You can freely choose between Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Duck Duck Go today.

You and I are tech savvy enough to change it to our preference. But there are probably millions and millions of people who won't care to change the default or even notice. In this case, Google has the most to lose. Since their business is advertising and gathering user data, to not be the default anymore would be a big loss for them.

And Google's search engine isn't that special. People just think it is.
6 billion people on this planet minus the people who work on Microsoft's Bing team disagree with you. Nothing comes close to Google search's accuracy.

Yahoo and Bing are useless. I hope they give you the option to change it back to Google.

I find Bing superior to Googles search results so I switched to them as my default.

If Apple chooses Bing as the default, it means all Apple users can earn Bing Rewards by default. This means they will get free iTunes cards just for searching, which means more money for Apple.

I thought I read with every search performed on Apple iOS Safari with Google that Google had to pay a teeny-tiny percentage to Apple.

if you hate Google...maybe use google?

Apple to work a deal where they can cherry pick best google maps services (e.g. streetview) to allow google to be default search.

#longshot

Heh, "hey Google, you know that one area in which your mobile OS is better than ours? Port it over to us and we'll agree to use your search engine!"

Edit: Apple could resurrect Sherlock to enable users to search with multiple search engines at once. Or maybe just buy Devon for their search agent. :p

But is it better than Excite?

I think the first time I heard of Google was when they bought Deja News. Probably should remember for sure but I didn't know it was such a momentous occasion when it happened.

I would rather see Apple engineer its own search service which blows everything away or which leverages multiple engines. Apple has the money, the resources, the infrastructure and everything else to develop such a system to dominate the future search market.

What resources does Apple have? Just yesterday this same publication reported about iCloud stagnating because of organizational issues. No way does Apple have the bandwidth to take on a massive project like search.
