i swear ive heard DDG more in this thread than i have in the last 2 years combined.

only on macrumors.

apple ditching google for search would be disastrous and hilarious at the same time.

bing is godawful. it is like 2/10. yahoo is marginally better.

google search is literally 15 years of development ahead of yahoo and bing.

That depends. If you're asking MacRumors, then everyone here uses Bing and Safari (lol). If you're asking normal, everyday people who don't make stupid decisions based on aligning themselves with corporations, then yeah pretty much everyone uses Google.

Excellent comment. Sums up this forum nicely. :)

Google is really good if you are looking for 'technical' results.

Bing is actually really good for everything else.
I would challenge everyone to switch to Bing for 3 months without deviation.
After 3 months go back to Google. See which one is better.

A lot of it is preconceived notions.

I used bing for one afternoon, and I gave up.

It's awful and your searches are almost never on the first page or not even indexed at all

Google searches are almost always precise within the first 5 links it offers.

Bing is a mish mash of sponsored links and offers links that are too general.

I'd take Microsoft's Bing over Yahoo, but I've always considered Google as #1.

As much as I would love for Apple to totally isolate itself from Google, it's hard to argue that. If Apple wants a search service to come close to Google, it will likely have to create one. I've tried using the other two at times. I don't know whether I'm just used to the way Google looks or whether it's actually a bazillion times better, but it feels wrong not using Google for search.

Maps, however, started rough but has gotten better. Only wish my new car used CarPlay instead of the built-in navigation system.

There is a reason why Google is the most popular search engine, next to being the best

Open bing. Open yahoo. Open Google. See the difference?

The best search engine is Google, simply because almost 100% of people use it.

How is something good only based on everyone using it (and certainly not everyone does)?

Seems like a good part of it can be related to brand bias (as has been discussed a bit throughout this thread).

Having dealt with Apple maps, whoever gets the deal will still result in a good service. I can see Apple dropping google due to Android and all the other search providers catching upto google.

Heck after buying Beats, I would not be shocked if they went with Yahoo ;)

Well that depends on what your searching for!

Its naive to say that google is the best in every search result.

You realise Siri uses Bing, and I doubt anyone has noticed....

You are aware that Yahoo pretty much is Bing right? As long as Google isn't chosen once more, it looks like Microsoft win either way.

On July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced that they had made a ten-year deal in which the Yahoo! search engine would be replaced by Bing. Yahoo! will get to keep 88% of the revenue from all search ad sales on its site for the first five years of the deal, and have the right to sell advertising on some Microsoft sites. Yahoo! Search will still maintain its own user interface, but will eventually feature "Powered by Bing™" branding.[15][16] All Yahoo! Search global customers and partners are expected to be transitioned by early 2012.[7]

if we loose the ability to google search on iOS or I have to use Maps instead of Google Maps it will greatly reduce my eagerness towards the iPhone.

I don't think apple is going to prevent you from "googling" and you can always download google maps. I think the arrangement is what apple will be using or pre-installing.

I reckon Apple will either switch to using DuckDuckGo/Yandex or buy out DuckDuckGo/Yandex but maintain the philosophy and policy!

Has anyone else switched to using this search engine recently, I really can't fault it and might not be quite as good as google but beats yahoo/bing in my opinion.

I've been using DuckDuckGo since the first day Apple integrated it as a search choice. IMHO it is just as good or better than Yahoo or Bing, but not as good as Google. Google has just better filter options, better results, and better user experience.

Things like date filters, and size/format filters for images make Google way more useful.

Yahoo is a nightmare (new tabs for every search? Get a grip!) and Bing is only just fine.

Would not mind seeing Apple snatch up DDG and make it their own, adding above functionality putting it at least on par with Google on that part. They'll have to work a while to get to the same level with search results though..

Is anyone still using Google for search?

It's time for Apple to drop them.

Are you honestly asking this question? Google is by far the leader in search, it's not even close. Of course people still use Google for search. It's almost a monopoly when it comes to search.

Apple shouldn't drop Google as search because search is what Google does best. Bing/Yahoo pale in comparison. Duck Duck Go is great as far as a smaller search engine goes, but still doesn't match Google when it comes to certain searches so it still keeps me away from using them.

Apple's main concern should be user experience. In the US Bing is pretty decent, but anywhere outside the US Bing is pretty awful. Since Yahoo search uses Bing for it's searches it's not going to make things any better.

----------

100% does not mean what you think it does ;)

Siri disagrees....... ask her to search for something.

Siri only does what it's been programmed to do. Use Bing unless you specify to Google something. It doesn't mean that Siri thinks Bing is better, just that Apple awarded the contract to Bing.

Hypocrisy is at record levels now.

'Yeah Google will sell your life story that’s why I can't stand them'. Oh, except when doing a Google search of course. Then the top notch and ‘free’ search capability suits me.

it sure seems at the end rung everyone uses Bing (Yahoo, Apple) in some form shape or another..

Why is this out of curiosity ?

Apart from the fact Google is the largest that is ?

Has Apple even attempted at a big search engine themselves ? Or doesn't no one wanna go into this area and just grab/leech results of the "main guy".

Any explanation here?

But that's the thing, they don't sell any personal identifying information. I don't care if anonymous information gets sold, so long as they don't know who's it is what difference does it make? If it makes my search results better then I'm all for it!

I don't buy into this hysteria of everything I do online must be private. Google is a trustworthy company. They don't compromise your privacy.

To each their own of course, but I'd rather stick to Google which provides me with better results rather than being overly paranoid :)

That’s the point I’m making. I know Google has to advertise and that they use my statistics, (in part along with a billion others), to do it.
It’s just crazy how everybody slates them and then uses their products.

DuckDuckGO is being run by 2 guys in a basement. With that said Apple could create their own and be done with it

DuckDuckGo has 12 employees, and they started on this in 2007, so it's taken 7 years to get to where it is now. I would estimate it would take Apple 2-3 years to replicate it. It'd be much faster to buy them.

Another option is Apple could make them the default provider and front them the money so that they can buy the servers to handle the sudden explosion in demand.
