Exactly. I've tried Bing, Yahoo and numerous others .. they do not compare with the accuracy I get using Google Search.

I use DuckDuckGo as my default at home but I find myself reverting to google for some stuff, which I actually really hate. I wish that other companies would step it up because I really don't like relying on Google for things as private as email and searching.

I've always hated that word used in this sense.."court." It makes it sound like some kind of dirty ritual.

I guess it could also mean they're taking them out to dinner...

Apple is a pretty girl, and three young men Microsoft, Yahoo and Google (still unknown for now) are courting her for potential 5 years marriage contract. :p

Spotlight pretty much does this already, in Yosemite.

Unless you turn it off (which I did pretty quickly).

Why? Spotlight Yosemite is the best thing since they discovered butter. I really like it and use it extensively as the central of computing, which I think it should be done exclusively. My desktop is empty and my dock has a bare minimum of icons, I launch apps, read wiki, search ebay and everything else (even email) solely from Spotlight.

I am no Microsoft fan but I have to say BING returns some very satisfying results that I could not get with Google and I was able to do more online shopping using Bing's results. I'd be okay if Apple dropped Bing....but Yahoo? No thanks.

Contract is up in 2015? Where has Google Maps been all this time? Apple just needs to swallow their pride and partner with Google again. Best maps, best search. And they can cram it with Tom Tom.

Add to the deal a requirement to make MS Apps - Office, Project, Visio etc. - first class citizens on Apple's platform by _ for _ years.

Apple is a middle-aged white man in high-waisted jeans, clunky sneakers and listening to U2.

Just add !g to the query - no copy/paste needed. Learn the !bangs, that's what makes Duck Duck Go more powerful than Google.

When I've typed !bang searches into DuckDuckGo, the results are presented through a Google Custom Search page. Neat trick, but doesn't this mean my search results are now being tracked?

WNeat trick, but doesn't this mean my search results are now being tracked?

Yes it does. If you want to use Google, they will attempt to track you. The only way I could imagine getting around their attempts might be to use The Onion Router (TOR).

Seems like you can already switch the search in safari to Bing or Yahoo in preferences (at least in Safari 8.0 I see this option). I would like to stick with google because I can have my search history synced across all my devices but I certainly think there should be a choice of what to use.

How would the expiration of the search engine deal with google change things? Would I no longer be able to do a google search from the address bar in safari? Because that would be lame. I just switched from using chrome full-time to safari because I really like the newest version.

I reckon Apple will either switch to using DuckDuckGo/Yandex or buy out DuckDuckGo/Yandex but maintain the philosophy and policy!

Has anyone else switched to using this search engine recently, I really can't fault it and might not be quite as good as google but beats yahoo/bing in my opinion.

I use DDG primarily a bit, but still find Google the most accurate/relevant when I'm looking for specific images, amongst other specific searches.

Thanks for the reply.

So for !bang searches, DuckDuckGo doesn't track my searches — but sends me to a service (Google) that does track my searches. That's kind of disappointing.

Still, I do see the value of using DDG for regular searches.

Right now Google is better than anyone else in search and with it's dominance comes the revenue to keep it that way. But I love that Yahoo and Microsoft are in there battling it out. Competition only benefits consumers and raises the bar, so I hope Apple continues to throw them a bone here and there and hopefully keeps both of them as viable options. I'm sure Google also hopes to keep them viable as not to face the same scrutiny MS faced as a monopoly.

Maybe Apple can even own a small percent of Yahoo and in turn get some help integrating Siri more directly in search. MS doesnt need charity to keep Bing from imploding, but Yahoo sure does.

Apple should make the change; no sense in helping your main competitor. A few users will manually change it back to Google but my guess is that most users won't even notice.

Bing, especially, has made great strides in recent years (and surpassed Google in some ways) and it'll be like maps... for 80+% of users, the default (Bing or Yahoo) will be good enough.

Courting was a beautiful old fashioned European ritual that was wiped from their culture and taken from their people by mass media nastiness.

Like everything else.

Or you know, maybe 2015 will be the year Apple releases it's own search engine...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. No. Can you image the design on that? 5 results per page so it looks clean. Everything the same light gray font with 2 pixel width. Have the window be transparent so you can see a blur of your desktop. In fact, why have it in the browser? Make it a stand alone app! iSearch..no wait!... :apple: Search

I've always preferred Google. It seems to give me the results I'm looking for.
I don't care who the default is, as others have commented, as long as I can change it to what ever whenever I want.

Duckduckgo is the best by far. In fact, I can prove it's the best:

If you can't find something and want to use google, duckduckgo will proxy the google result

!g Google Sux

or you want to search Wikipedia

!w Why Google Sux

or you want to search Amazon

!a Books why Google Sux

or perhaps you just want to use Wolfram Alpha

!wa Mathematical proof that Google Sux

And yes you can use these in the search bar of Safari when you set Duckduckgo as your default search engine. All without any tracking of your activity.

Exactly! I was trying to find a way to explain this.
