The current ATV experience certainly isn't up to the bar they've set elsewhere.

It sounds like you think they could release a high-end Apple television today based on the existing ATV. Why do you think they aren't doing that? Integrating the ATV electronics into a nice panel would take all of a few weeks.

When Apple releases a tv, it will be far more polished than this current interface.

Now you read minds too? Oh boy.

I think Apple knows exactly what they are doing.

PBS!!! Yay!!!

I've been using the PBS app on the iPad and AirPlay to stream to the AppleTV. This gets a lot of good content, but the expiration date is pretty short and they do insert some ads in some programming. From a cursory look, the AppleTV app doesn't offer the same content, such as NewHour programs less than a day old. Yet another selection of content is available through the PBS mobile web interface. It's nice to have yet another way to view PBS programs, but it's altogether kind of a mess, not knowing where to look for any given program, especially if you're not into endless reruns of Downton Abby.

It's not a simplistic view, it's a realistic one based on Apple's previous history. As I say, with it being a hobby, I can see why Apple is letting it go at this point. You can bet it will be sorted out before they release a high-end device in this space. The entire purpose of Apple entering the TV market is to help solve the real issues we've discussed here. That's not to dismiss the challenges that must be overcome, which are likely a big reason why there is no product on the market yet. Those issues haven't been solved.

The reason why they haven't released a high end device in this space is because the rights issues are so intractable. Everyone who is not a content creator or a cable company wants the system to change. Unfortunately, the content creators and the cable companies control the entire system and they don't see any reason to disturb a model that works so well for them.

Sometimes I feel the Apple TV is useless outside of the US.

I almost agree, as far as channels go. Specially since there's no jailbreak for ATV 3, and there's no clear timeline for implementing apps.

Regarding PBS (personally I don't care too much about Disney, ESPN or Vevo), you can watch some of its content outside the US for free, either on your computer, or stream it to your TV via iOS Safari-airplay.

Content distribution limits are way obsolete in todays world. I wish they included Comedy Central, BBC, CBC, Al Jazeera, DW, etc for all locations. Meanwhile, check out Beamer.app - it's one of the best uses for your ATv. Combined with elgato's eyeTV, the ATv really comes in handy outside the iTunes ecosystem.

cheers!

Time Warner Cable (TWC)

The company is also said to be working on deals with cable provider Time Warner and TV network The CW.

Been hearing about TWC for too long... release it already!! It's already on iOS so what's the big hitch? I'd like to ditch my TWC converter box asap and stop paying for it every month.

The UI is seriously in need of a complete overhaul. Cumbersome and way short of Apple's standards. There is just no excuse for just how ugly and clunky it is.

You answered your own question. TWC makes big bucks on those box rentals.

Apple keeps adding more and more of those channels. Good. BUT they should play their "big player" card and make the broadcasting corporations remove those stupid geo fences! The internet goes worldwide and people in other countries just might want to see that content, too.

Why Yahoo Movies ??

This is very "un-Apply-ley"

You have PBS, HBO Go, Walt Disney, etc...

Its like "picking out the odd channel" ....

Why don't they have an Amazon Prime Video app native on ATV? It's on the iPhone and the iPad and you can AirPlay it to the ATV, but a native app would be great.

With all these devices, Apple will probably develop a MonsterPad with a big screen to simply hang on the wall. Full interaction and no more different UI´s. Easy peasy.

PBS requiring an account is bizarre. If I tune in OTA PBS on my TV I don't need an account. Why now?

Because PBS stations need the support of Viewers Like You™ to stay on the air. So they need to know who those viewers are in order to bug you about pledging.

I am just as frustrated as you are, mainly because as an IT consultant I am spending months working abroad and the geo restrictions get on my nerves.

You can use Unlocator outside US, works for netflix and hulu. You just need to setup an alternate DNS server on your apple tv.

It is currently Beta so free,

here is my afiliate link (disclaimer below)

[although the beta is stil running free as far as I know]

Good luck

It is actually annoying because this icons keep pilling up on my main screen and there is no way to organize them.

Everytime a new app/icon/channel is added I have to re-learn my atv remote "moves".

Don't think that's the issue here. It is already on the XBox and a couple of other media players. Something else is holding it up...

Perhaps Microsoft and the others are compensating TWC for those lost revenues. It's the sort of thing Microsoft would do, but Apple probably would not do. It's especially possible given that the Xbox is a much more expensive product than the AppleTV, and primarily made for gaming. All I know or can guess is that the hangup is over money, as hangups usually are.

Possibly unwisely I used my Facebook account to register with PBS. It will be interesting to see how they use that information. I may never know. I will also never know why they don't require registration to use their iPad app or mobile web content site.

My other complaint, as a videophile, is that even if they allowed a Plex or XBMC app, the box's hardware doesn't support HD MPEG-2 video or 24Hz/fps video.

Don't forget that it cannot (or at least the last I heard Apple's software will not allow) it to play 44.1kHz DTS music CDs as it up-samples everything to 48kHz, which destroys the encoding.

The original ATV, limited as it may have been in terms of ability to play HD signals at higher bit-rates, etc., had a hard drive that could store all kinds of content locally, could play DTS 44.1kHz music CDs without it even knowing it (and from XBMC as well, which it was easily hacked to add and up to Eden without having to give up the Apple interface either). It still uses the ATV2's original interface look (yes it's much cleaner and less ugly looking and oddly enough looks closer to iOS7's look than the current ATV GUI). With a Crystal HD card, the thing rocks (too bad it loses the WiFi card, although I think you can plug a USB one in). The unit does get pretty darn warm, though.

AFAIK, you still can't hack an ATV3 to run XBMC and the ATV2 doesn't support 1080p playback, so sadly there doesn't seem to be a best of all worlds version of the thing. If Apple would just support an App store so XBMC and Plex could be officially added, things would improve quite a bit. OTOH, I've got to love being able to play games on AppleTV via Bluetooth PS3 controller and Airplay from a Mac (e.g. I just finished The Cave the other day on my plasma HD even though it's on the opposite side of the house from where the Mac running the game is located). In fact, I can't help but wonder if I couldn't just send any type of video or player I wanted over Airplay to the AppleTV and control it all via iPod Touch and/or an iPad or even a bluetooth mouse/keyboard for that matter. Frankly, that would solve a lot of the limitations of AppleTV's own interface.

I don't know why I never think to stream from my iPad. However, I just got a new mini and am thinking of hooking the old one up to the tv, I think that would give me a much fuller, cable-free existence.

Really, really nice

I've been trying out these 2 new apps on Apple TV and they are really great. Both offer lots of content worth watching.:):apple:

It works, mostly. Probably the resolution wouldn't satisfy someone with a large screen but it's okay on our 32" set. The problems come with the ad breaks. If the iPad has gone to sleep, the program gets lost and has to be restarted when the ad ends. The trick is to keep the iPad from going to sleep, or to wake it up the moment the ad starts. A cable-free existence, it isn't real yet.

Ii think everyone knows but not many care sorry bud

Amazon usually sell albums for $1.99 around thanksgiving, and older greatest hits for $.99, never have they released a $1 new album before . Heck billboard changed their rules because of that little stunt...

Not everyone knows, and people who just watched her perform live and act in SNL might be interested in buying it after hearing her. Or even if they did know, they might have not remembered about it, so it serves as a reminder.

And oh well, the amazon thing was just that, a sale by amazon. Nothing to do with her, she doesn't decide the price.

I don't want to divert too much from topic on hand, but it is naieve to think it has nothing to do with her, it was a cross promo deal between her management and amazon, for Amazon to promote cloud service and for her to promote the album. Just like Kanye did with Samsung.

Billboard even had to change the rules around what counts as album sale after this little stunt.

How about his or her attitude? I did clearly state my reasons and instead of helping me he or she had to give my attitude. Obviously the person has no clue about the Airplay problem.

Your position is that 'Airplay sucks'.

I assure you that Airplay does not suck, but it is only as good as the network it is attached to. You clearly have network problems. I directed you to where to get help with that.

We can't help you unless you first commit to help yourself.

I just got back from week long vacation on Saturday night and just discovered those two new channels. It is nice to have new channels but frankly they are nothing for me to jump up and down over. The only channels I am really using are Netflix and YouTube. WSJ live is offline most of the time and I have zero interest in sports or "Crunchy Roll" so they are hidden. I would love to have a Sling app as well as access to the iTunes store to get other apps for the ATV. Failing that, I will continue to use it but for the most part it is not a high priority device for me.

Whaa? Where? Please let me know by directing me to a link or something.. I have not been able to find any 3D content, while having all the necessary equipment at home. THe only way for me to watch 3D movies is by buying them, and I really don't buy mopvies anymore.. just rent or stream via subscription services.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Try searching for 3D. I don't know if apple tv has been updated to support delivery of netflix super HD and 3D, or if your internet provider has expanded netflix support with their openconnect... thing (whatever it is) but try your luck.
