3 Apple TVs, 1 HD Antenna (with PBS, PBS Create and PBS Kids for FREE), a netflix subscription and a Tivo. What more do you need? I used to spend over $100 per month on satellite. Now $8 for netflix + $15 for Tivo. The PBS on demand is nice on Apple TV, but honestly adding the Tivo to my free HD antenna rules! Plus I get CW, QVC, CMT/Zeus, Antenna TV, and much more for free.

I didn't want to pay for the Tivo at first, but for a total of $23/month, it's worth it. Plus NBC airs CNBCs Mad Money around 3AM daily, so I get to watch it (when I want to) the next day for FREE.

I've just signed up for a Virgin TeVo for this reason. Silly, really that there's no iPlayer app yet. Also that these new apps are US only. Why can't we see the yahoo content?

----------

The remote app actually mentions this in its startup tutorial.

----------

I'm willing to bet if you change your region to US (and possibly use unblock-us) this is doable. My wife is too busy watching the Carrie Diaries for me to find out...

Give this guy a manual!

Ahhhh thanks guys! was driving me crazy!

I think I am going to update one of my Apple TV's, I'd hate to lose my jailbreak, but I am missing the last 3 or so updates.

I love the promo picture attached, it has Rob Ford in it. It's about time Canada has a politician that's interesting. Even if it's just because he's a crazy drug addict.

The buffoon mayor just can't keep away from the front page!

Would you mind sharing a little more information. First, are you talking about pure Airplay or Airplay Mirroring or both. I think pure Airplay is much better the mirroring. My experience is that there is a definite difference in HD Quality when using Airplay vs. direct streaming. However, I would love to be wrong. I have a new Airport Extreme in the next room and my ATV is on ethernet. Also, I think Mirroring is maybe loosing the 1080p setting (not sure).

Airplay is different than Airplay mirroring. Airplay negotiates the connection stream not through the iOS device controlling it, but directly to the ATV which decodes the file itself, which is why quality is great, the remote works, and the entire experience tends to just work. Airplay Mirroring is a work-around for some apps that have chosen not to support the full Airplay spec, and it will literally re-encode exactly what is seen on your screen and send it to the ATV. The quality is not as good because you are both starting at a lower resolution (that of the iOS device) and because you are compressing an image of the screen on the fly.

Just played around with Yahoo Screens app.. It's sort of "meh". I got excited for a moment about Daily Show and Colbert Report, but all they offer are short 2-5 minute snippets, not full episodes.. Same for ABC News, and the rest of it.

I would like to be able to watch the entire 30 minute newscast. Have zero desire clicking around a bunch of couple of minute long news clips. I feel that all these "sampler" apps do is try to frustrate users into signing up for cable subscription.

Another app deleted from my home screen.

Yep. Unfortunately, I have to agree.

If this was an app from the App Store, I'd place the blame on Yahoo. But it's not. We don't have App Store access (and don't bring up AirPlay, because while it helps, it is also not seamless, it requires that we keep another device next to us while watching TV, and it actually loses connection at times (I notice it particularly when Airplaying photos or personal videos).

What we have is apps that Apple places on our screens, and many of those are next to useless.

There are way too many awkward UI issues still plaguing ATV:

- Scrolling within your own library can be painful, if you have a lot of stuff. Plus, who is the idiot who decided that every season of a show should have its own item? To get to Weeds, I have to scroll through every season of every show I have -- imagine if you have The Simpsons (what is it, 25 seasons!) and one of the endless soaps in there!

- Tiles. If the main screen is all tiles, why can't we have the option of viewing content within categories as tiles? For instance, in TV Shows, we can have a tile for The Simpsons show - when selected, we can see the seasons and then the individual episodes.

- iTunes library auto update. Really, the fact that I cannot set the iTunes library folder to auto-update when I add a new movie or a TV show (not purchased from Apple) is either really poor execution by Apple, or just a really obnoxious way of making it difficult to use any content from outside the walled garden.

- Netflix. Why is it that on every other platform, when I finish episode 1, the screen automatically changes to Episode 2. On ATV, it shows you the Play button for the episode you just finished watching. Plus, on ATV you cannot keep track of watched and unwatched Netflix episodes - if you move up or down the list, you lose your place and have to remember the descriptions (fading the watched episodes, like on other platforms, would be a start).

- Even trying to hide unwanted tiles (like the useless Yahoo) is basically a workaround and not an easy, elegant and intuitive operation.

ATV is a decent product, but it feels half-baked. The only reason it sells (and that I keep mine) is that the competition is weak. But trust me, Google will keep pushing until they get it right, just like they did with Android. And then it will be too late for Apple. Again.

Yahoo Screen SUCKS!

I'm sorry but Yahoo Screen sucks! Just short clips? It's no wonder Yahoo is doing so poorly; they don't have any vision. The app looks terrible and the content is even crappier! FAIL!

The Daily Show is the only reason I keep a jailbroken Apple TV. If this new Yahoo thing had full episodes I'd sell the ATV2.

. . . But it looks like they only have clips.

I've had screen on my iPad for a while. I used it to watch a bunch of SNL clips. They really did seem to post the ones I remember liking the most. But then the novelty of the whole thing wore off, and having to keep scrolling through the list became tiresome. Oh well.

Still waiting for the Amazon Prime channel. I think I'll be waiting a while, or until Apple buys Amazon.

She was good on SNL, but damn, did she have to plug her album at the end again? We all know Gaga that you have an album.

I'm surprise Amazon is not selling her new album for 99 cents...again!

It's kind of her job, to promote her album :p Even with all the promo, not everyone knows if it's out yet or not.

And the Amazon deal was just there cuz they were promoting the new music service sooo.

I updated, but am unable to access the PBS app - it doesn't even get to the login. I already have a PBS login, but never get that far; it just winds up with "not available" or some such.

Keep trying. By the time I got my account situated, my code expired, but starting over was nearly as fast. If the servers are just to busy, come back in an hour/day.

Its not clear why all this security is needed, but at least its free!

That screen shot shows a whole-lotta nothing to watch. Bad sales pitch, Apple.

that isnt apple's sales pitch. it looks like a home made screenshot.

but nice attempt at hatin' on apple. very popular these days... you should just take Eddy Cue's job. spare them the grief of failing hard, right?

----------

I think they've got something big coming, or they would have updated the UI a long time ago.

they did. ATV used to use a text-driven menu UI, when it switched to big icons (akin to the home screen on an iOS device). much easier to see and use than text-driven menus.

----------

I'm still waiting to find out how Apple is going to "revolutionize" TV.

they may never. apple has never announced that they are going to revolutionize tv. and it wouldnt bother me at all if they never did.

----------

If you don't use some of the apps regularly, you get signed out. Which means that the ATV in our guest bedroom is almost always unusable. Totally ridiculous UI.

that isnt a UI issue, thats poor app functionality. note that the Netflix app doesnt do this -- you remain logged in indefinitely as far as i can tell.

----------

Why don't they have an Amazon Prime Video app native on ATV? It's on the iPhone and the iPad and you can AirPlay it to the ATV, but a native app would be great.

probably because Apple and Amazon are major content competitors. since the ATV is not open to developers, the "apps" you see on it are the result of partnership deals. not likely to happen between the Burger King and McDonald's of online media sales.

----------

Yes it is getting a bit crazy with all the icons. Needs something to clean it up.

have you disabled the ones you dont use?

I guess i don't get it.

I just sold my Apple tv on ebay primarily because my cable provider, att uverse, has an ok UI and i get a ton more content than atv offers. In addition, if i want access to movies and music, my NAS has everything i need and with its embedded twonky dnla server, well, atv is redundant.

If atv had voice or hand control or just a better ui AND i could access all of my own content and not have to phoque with itunes to see my nonapple content, then, maybe, just maybe, atv would be worth it.

Apple has not announced anthing significant on or for this platform in a long time...i mean a real long time. It really is the only product that i can safely save Apple has neglected...hell, even the Mac Pro has had a major update. Adding new channels is not innovation...its keeping up with the cable providers.

Apple historically has called this product a "hobby" which, from my perspective, is embarrassing for the most successful company in the world.

It does, but they really need to revise the UI now and rethink the "screenful of icons" approach.

How about a way of searching for content across all of the integrated apps-- that would be nice. Maybe that will be 2014's next big thing.

If they had a better way to navigate and present it, they would already have exchanged it.

Really?

I just wish there would be an app or channel with 3D content..

A special channel for you and the three other guys who own the soon to be discontinued 3D tvs? Really?

Go to any store that sells tvs and they'll tell you that the 3D platform never caught on, so you are stuck with those funky glasses, my friend.

The world will move to 4 or 8 K tvs that will provide an unbelievable viewing experience over the next 4-5 years. Prices are still way too elevated and there is little content for 4k tv but it is the future and, having seen them multiple times, there is nothing quite like it. They remind me of early flat panel tvs that cost a ton of money but now they are reasonable.
