My 12 mini problem is a bit different, but I think gives hope that a software fix can be implemented.
Moved from iPhone 8, as soon as I restored from iCloud onto the mini, I noticed how much better the screen is on the 12. On the 8, I always had brightness at around 75%, with True Tone, Night Shift, and Auto Brightness all turned off.
Had the mini setup same way, brightness at maybe 65%. I then decided to go into settings on the mini and turn on Night Shift because my wife said it's good for my sleep. Had it setup to Scheduled at 10PM on and 7AM off, turned on Manually Enable Until Tomorrow, slider to Less Warm. Looked at it, didn't like it, went back to turn everything under Night Shift off.

The problem is, my 12 mini screen never went back to the fresh, crisp display it was prior to my Night Shift experiment.
After I turned Night Shift off, I went back to finishing setting up some other apps and I thought to myself that it looks different. The screen is noticeably dimmer and has the slight yellow tint. I spoke to Apple support and they had me check all the usual settings which I already have done. The Apple person sucked, by the way. I have afterwards gone through Reset All Settings but still haven't gotten the screen to look like before the Night Shift tryout. Moreover, it definitely gets worse in the evening.

All of this makes me think that there is a software bug of some sort that is connected to Night Shift. I had only started having issues immediately after I enabled Night Shift. It was an instant difference, and the timeframe between me enabling Night Shift and then disabling it was less than 5 minutes. It is as if disabling it didn't fully work, and Night Shift is still affecting my display.

This is a remarkable observation. Is Apple aware of it?

Something similar happened the two times I reset my iPhone 12 pro using iTunes... Once the reset was over, Apple logo seemed crystal white. After 10 seconds the logo turned yellow and home screen loaded...

Was it a hard reset? I think Tru Tone is on by default when an iPhone gets reset.

I’ve heard that reset all settings simply wipes the data but keeps the OS. Maybe one of us should try a DFU restore and see if the screen is any better ? I know DFU is supposed to reinstall the OS from scratch.

Interesting. I experienced something similar with True Tone, which would get stuck on a certain setting. This was fixed by a reboot though but would then reappear

I came on here not because I love finding issues on my phone... but because as i was setting up my new iPhone12 I didn’t like the yellow tOne. So I compared it to my iPhone XR. XR has a much nicer white. Same with my iPad Pro.
I realise that LCD is different from OLED, but I am sure this cannot be the best white an OLED can do.

Before asking for a replacement, I’d want to know if this is a hardware or software defect. I really have no energy to play the exchange game either, but I can’t accept to keep a phone with a screen Like that.

Photos with the two screen one next to the other. With True Tone on and off.

The yellow won't show up on photos. I did the same thing with my xr vs 12. 12 was way more yellow in person but in photos it looked bright white.

I'm keeping my xr and i returned the 12.

That is something I would consider, if it wasn’t for the fact I got the phone with Vodafone, by getting 2 more years of contract. They are also giving me a good deal to take my XR back. Cancelling the whole lot would be too much of a hassle...

The main thing I want to find out is whether there is an issue with all, and we either keep it and live with it / or return it and be it, or if it’s only some phones that are affected. If the latter obviously I’d ask for an exchange.

Someone from the Apple support team I was chatting to today mentioned that this is a well known issue to Apple. Later on I spoke to someone on the phone - a senior advisor - and he was a bit more on the fence about it. Asked me to take a picture and share it with him. Then said he’d talk to the engineers and will call me back.

If it helps. I got 4 12 Pro Maxes which were similar.
Also today in UK checked 2 iPhone 12s at Selfridges and 1 12 Pro Max and 2 12 Pros at two different John Lewis Stores, as well as the phones at Covent Garden Apple Store - ALL were warmer than my 11 Pro Max. Not yellow, but slightly warmer.

I think quite a few people on here should stop inspecting their iPhones for days on end with microscopes and magnifying glasses. Of course if there is a glaring defect with the naked eye, then it is certainly worth exchanging the phone for a new one. However, the folks that are exchanging their phone 10, 15, or 20 times over are going overboard.

In my case, I did no such inspection, and I wasn't even aware of this thread when I received my iPhone 12 at launch. But I immediately noticed that the screen looked yellow and bad. Then I compared to my iPhone X and realized just how bad it was. It was only then that I found this thread -- specifically looking to see if anyone else had reported similar issues.

I returned it because it looked bad to me -- like a screen from a cheap phone and not one of the same quality as my iPhone X. I'm watching this thread, hoping that it's just an issue with early devices. I'm not interested in playing the screen lottery with returns.

Let us know please what he says when he calls you back. So many conflicting stories about apple support. Some say they are aware of the issue, others say the yellow thing is normal so move along.

I spoke to a senior tech advisor that elevated the issue to engineering
She called me back today and told me that they said the screen was in the parameters that Apple accepts. I told her they never even saw my screen
How could this be?
Bottom Line: Nobody cares! I’ve wasted over 4 hours talking to tech Support (5 different people) Nobody even offered me an expedited exchange. Which goes to prove my point
Time to return this iPhone

Apple should acknowledge that this is a known problem
Also they should either acknowledge that a Software update is coming or not
Without any confirmation from Apple there’s going to be a lot of iPhones retirned

so

we've reached the point in the thread where:

"my screen is yellow but I can't prove it"

"IM TELLING YOU ITS YELLOW"

--- returns phone ----

"YELLOW AGAIN, CANT PROVE IT"

---returns phone---

---buys phone---

stop trolling, guys.

there hasn't been more than 5 screens posted in this entire thread that warrants a return or exchange.

I just did a dfu restore and nothing changed. Mine looks fine without TT.
I just did a reset all settings and now TT looks much better and is too cool without it. It’s also brighter and not washed out looking anymore.

Seriously, I don't know what happen to iPhone 12 PM display panel this year. I noticed a slighy image retention at the Status Bar and Home Bar after using Dark Mode. Well, I observed it through plain gray image.

This has been happening since 4s. Apple will never admit it. I’ve actually learned that the replacement “white box” units are usually more yellow (probably returns).

like I said previous, now I just order multiples, check screens, and keep the best one.

it is not software, just subpar screens that most of Apple customers will never complain about. We are the minority, the majority of iPhone users don’t care or even notice.

Sadly, that sounds like a really great idea since Apple doesn't seem it can be bothered to tighten their screen pass/fail rates.

5c, screen okay. Yellowed and darkened at edges after two years. First phone. Fine

5s. Holy grail screen. Perfect! Crisp! My stupid *** didn't know about screen lottery and returned it because the power button rattled. Stupid me thought i should return. Out of the next three phones I had to return, the fourth was the only tolerable screen (either from the vertical lines or from super yellow screen, or both) I finally had to settle with a subpar screen that was just okay. I learned a valuable lesson from that about the screen lottery and to not return your phone if you get a perfect screen.

the next phone was a 7 and Hallelujah it was perfect!!

the next 7 I got was for "free" from Verizon for switching. This screen is absolute ****. The top is a cooler color than the bottom (it fades blue tint to yellow tint at bottom), and the bottom has this stage play lighting dArk-light-dark-light that reminds me of looking at a stage play. The only reason I put up with it is because everything else worked and who knows what other broken thing Apple would give me on a replacement phone?

Why do we gotta prove it ? You actually think people are lying about having yellow screens ?
