I'm returning my iPhone 12 Pro in part because of this issue but also because the phone is a bit unwieldy. I may get the iPhone 12 mini (keep in mind the "mini" has a larger display than the old "Plus" models). See my comparison of an iPhone 12 Pro on the left and an iPhone 11 Pro on the right. The first photo is with TrueTone and the second photo is without. I would describe the iPhone 12 Pro as washed out such that you don't get a true white, not so much that it's yellow. I doubt this is deliberate because a crisp white is a hallmark of a good display for reading. I suggest that no one waste their time adjusting Accessibility settings. You should not have to use those settings given the cost of an iPhone 12 Pro. Try the swap lottery or return it as I'm doing and see how things shake out.View attachment 974517

The diagonal measurement is very deceiving these days. When watching a 16:9 YouTube video with the Mini you’ll have a bit smaller screen area than an iPhone 7 at 4.63” compared to 5.5” of the Plus. That means 40% more screen area for 16:9 content for the Plus over the Mini.

In fact, the Xs Max and 11 Pro Max only have 1% larger screen area for 16:9 content over the Plus. It’s all about aspect ratio these days.

It actually didnt work for you. Yeah. This puts another color layer between you and the content. So it may look kinda correct for some colors, but not for others. It will end up looking artificial at certain times, like when you first wake up in the morning. Overall, not a solution.

Oh, also this has been suggested as a solution since like the iphone 7. So we know what we are talking about when we say: no it's not a true solution.
+1

This and the 'waiting for the glue to dry' both need to die.

This is hideous. Surely this isn’t on purpose? This forum looks slime coloured without changing the colour filters.

I'm comparing it to my X which looks like yours. The yellow is makes the screen dull and hard to read compared to my X. I also played movies to compare the two. The X def has deeper color tones than the 12 pro. Movies like Valerian have rich colors and good contrast, but the X outperformed with brightness and color; the 12 pro was just plain dull. Even with Dolby vision on, it was still dull.

Such a shame, I love the new hardware, but like everyone else said, I am not settling for a degraded screen that cost +$1,000. Its going back...

Went by the Apple Store and tried to see if the screens were more or less yellow and it was hard to truly tell without identity underlying pictures to see how the screens compare.

IDK if my eyes were fooling me but they did somewhat seem different but I can't prove anything.

I also called apple and they said they not only had no awareness of the separate sourcing of the models in the store vs what got shipped out and they said as far as they know nothing changed.

This is the first time I've had an iPhone with True Tone it just seems a little too intense.

Woah... Just set this iPhone 12 pro up... My iPhone X screen is brighter and whiter... This thing is yellow....... I do not have an Apple Store near me in this city at all... What are my options for exchange? If I call Apple do they do exchanges through mail?

Unfortunately, the lighting in Apple stores is so uniform and perfect that unless your screen looks like you took a yellow highlighter to it under normal lighting it's very difficult to notice screen differences in the store, at least in my experience.

You'll likely need to return it, get the money refund and do it over again.

Gosh this means that if I do a return - waiting for a new iPhone with the later shipping dates? Wow.... There isn't a way to make an appointment at an Apple store that if I am willing to travel to it - to guarantee an exchange with stock is there?

Also, what do you all know about paying monthly for Apple Care+? It seems if you do it on a per month basis you get the benefits and can cancel anytime? Perhaps this would enable express replacement service temporarily?

Just out of curiosity, did you show them your screen and ask them about your concerns? Did you turn off True Tone?

If it doesn’t match the display phone, which is what Apple is putting forth as a representation of what the phone should be like, then it’s defective right?
Right... and you return the hamburger because it doesn’t match the juicy, thick, color enhanced picture of the order display poster. Hey I got the cold flat one with wilted lettuce.....I want what’s in the picture!

I think the main difference with this comparison is it is achievable with one and not the other. Where fast food advertising is clearly not real food beyond fast food already not being 'real' food and highly processed - truly so, like a plastic mold of a patty that you can't eat with an asterisk stating its just a dummy patty at the bottom, the display units sometimes being really good (though I don't agree with all these theories, I do think they generally are better than the random luck of the draw from retail purchases for one reason or another, but others have 'debunked that') and others that post 'winning the screen lottery' is empirical proof that it can be done. Then there's also, you paid $2 for that burger shut up and eat It and move on, is a lot more palpable or try again next time, vs. you spent $1200 on a device: learn to love it, and learn to love staring at it for at least a year if not longer as your most used device.

I understand why Apple doesn't care enough to do anything dramatic about it. I would venture to say it's way more profitable and most people don't know or care what a 'good screen' means. The numbers probably reflect that. Screen lottery isn't specific to Apple either, it applies to televisions, other smartphone manufacturers, other laptop manufacturers, etc etc etc. we just expect paying a premium, and lots of parts being custom made by Apple or custom specifications dictated by Apple to manufacturers, that it would yield the same quality. I seriously doubt Steve Jobs for his personal phone, would be cool with going from an 11 Pro to a 12 Pro and being wow'd by the former and let down by the other. When getting an upgrade, it should be an upgrade. At absolute minimum, one would expect parity not concessions. Especially since the screen is the most interacted with piece of the device, from touch to sight.

I yearn for the day when displays are a binary thing and not an infinite gradient.

I still want the juicy thick burger with perfect bacon and crisp lettuce, sauce just oozing out the sides. And fresh hot fries golden yellow with salt crystals reflecting glimmers light. The coffee needs to have steam wafting on the surface. Damn I’m hungry now. Let’s throw in a cute curtious server that can make correct change and smiles saying “thank you sir”, as she carries my tray to the table for me. Is that too much to ask?

A boy can always dream but you might get a little 'something extra' if you present your complaints that way to the highly paid and revered fast food employee.

I prefer crispy waffle fries from Chick Fila, to soggy ones not sure what human being doesnt- I consider myself a bit of a fry aficionado, but life is a box of chocolates. I usually can't tell until I get home for one, but even if I ate one on the spot before driving out of the drive thru line there aint a chance in hell I would complain personally, gotta know if the juice is worth the squeeze for the employees but also the people behind me in line. I'd just roll the dice again at a later date.

I'm not eating those fries for hours at a time every day for a year minimum, and I paid very little and they're still edible when not great, so it's inconsequential.

Weakest post yet. I’m talking about comparing to a physical object in hand not a photoshopped picture of a phone.

Keep yearning.....unfortunately I have not seen any manufacturing process that does not have variability. Even human reproduction, you gets good ones and not so good ones. God or nature can’t even get it right 100% of the time.

there's chatter MicroLED could be the solution at last.

I dont know enough about the tech to know whether or not that's going to be a reality or not.

Im with ya though, not holding my breath

I consider myself incredibly lucky with screens, recently.

I think I'm getting less picky too, just to not burn up my cycles and time as I get older, but I still definitely have standards.

I feel especially lucky with se2 and 12 pro because those were both bought with att related stuff, se2 through Walmart deal 12 pro with financing and $800 in credits over 30 months. not really the easiest thing to swap for, unless you wanna get into Genius Bar hell scenarios, of which I would've had no choice and you are lucky to get one shot at that. maybe two. if that.

believe me though when I say I've had PLENTY of horrible luck with screens with previous devices so even though I have done fairly well, I won't scoff at people who have not because I've been there.

Too many times to recount. but when you get a good display Apple is generally best in class

If you really wanna see a fun thread of screen lottery, check out this one on Nintendo Switch. I'm so thankful to have a launch time frame screen made by Japan Display that still has me smitten, with good contrast and blacks and brightness since its a device I will hold onto, probably forever:

Does anyone have a 12 pro to compare to 12? Seen a few YouTube comparisons and its noticeable that the 12 seems to have the yellow tint much more than the pro , even though it's supposed to be the same screen.

This isn't software related is just variations of OLED screen production and it's within Apple's acceptable range, the same story for last year's 11 Pro/Max.

If you are unhappy, the only option is to return/exchange it and play the screen lottery game.

My 12 Pro is a tad yellower than my X, which I don't really mind but the "yellow" is not uniform on my 12 Pro.

Anyone knows what's the limit for returns? eg. How many times can I play this display lottery until Apple blacklists me

I don’t have a 12 sadly but my 12 Pro is severely jaundice

I have a 12 Pro and a regular 12. The iPhone 12 Pro is significantly warmer than the regular 12. The regular 12 has a really nice display. Returning the 12 Pro.

Ah ok well I suppose that just confirms there is a differentiation between screens and sometimes pretty massively. Certainly the 2 in this video which are supposed to be the same screen and are both on the same settings are very very off from each other.
