engadget article

I have just read an article on engadet which states apple are preparing to agree to replace discoloured macbooks and they also give a serial number range. Mine is within the range but has not shown any real problem. If i look at the track pad button it looks a different colour, in diect sunlight I can see no problem. I don't really use the wrist rest while typing. I hope I don't get it when it is out of warrenty.

Mine also moos, but they look as if they are only planning to replace the 15" macbook pro

The Stains have appeared

I am hear to say that the stain or discoloration issued has reared its ugly head on my Macbook. In fact my Macbook chipped around the battery section as well. This was the most disturbing, as I am pretty careful with it and have never banged or dropped it.
I took it to the Apple store in Palo Alto and they pretty much were surprised about the chipping, but not the discoloration. They said it would take a week to fix the issues i.e. upper and lower case replacement.
Again this is annoying, because I need this computer on a daily basis. I am probably going to wait till I get back to Los Angeles before taking it in.

you are being a little dismissive given the amount of people that are having this issue despite regularly washing their hands.

also, the term is "bought" not "brought", for those with a lower end spelling skills.

Who's post are you referring to hear? You typed a response randomly that does not refer to any of the posts on the last two pages of this thread.

Don't like dirt don't buy white

Anything white is going to show dirt, so If you don't want stains (and that goes for anything you buy) don't buy white things.

I understand that the orangey brown stains are a plastic reaction defect and that where a replacement is totally valid.

But that genral grey/black dirt staining will appear on every white macbook over a certain time as thats life, my white converse high tops show un wash-outable stains cos they are white.

If you wash your hands every single time you use the macbook and no one else goes on it then I can understand it will always stay clean and unstained.

I guess apple assume that this is common sense and most people realise this before choosing white over black.

Bottom line is that if you don't want any signs of dirt stains after a months and years of use , get a black macbook, if your not that bothered and like the white colour than get a white one and expect to have a few grey patches after months/years of use.

Ive got a white macbook, I know eventually it will go a bit dirty and honestly it doesn't bother me, the only thing that is out of order is when you get them brown/orange (general dirt doesnt stain orange/brown) abnormal intense stain patches that a lot of people have been getting, then you get on the blower to apple and say what the hell are these odd coloured stains on my macbook get it sorted now before I send the boys round.

well... Unfortunetly i MIGHT be getting slowy affected by this staining thing on my white macbook...
The thing is, the nearest apple store is 4 hours drive, now how do i go about getting this replaced IF it is a stain, and not just the yellow lights haha..?

Do i just call apple and say i have a stain, and then they tell me to ship it back? or do i have to drive 8 hours to get it looked at and then another 8 hours to pick it up after it gets fixed?
and how bad does it have to be in order to get it replaced?

My macbook is a week 23 so definately not one of the ones that would have a new top case and my top part is already a greyish color it was that way when I got it. I didn't like that and really thought about getting a black one because of that. I noticed it right away at the apple store when they first came out also. Like the keys are white and the area around them definately isn't white. So you are saying the replacement part is even darker grey?

I really won't be happy with that. I don't have the discoloration yet but I haven't used the keyboard on it much yet. Also my top part is kind of curling up on the edge by the ports I can fit a business card under it anyone else have that problem?

Yeah mine is a week 24, and the top cover is definately grey, noticabley grey... the keys and track pad are white, so its very noticable, as well as the area around the screen, is more white then the top panel. It was like that when i got it.....

Unfortunetly i had at one point pen on my palm, and i used my macbook without noticing, and now i have bits of blue ink on the palm rest.. :( At least if mine does stain and gets replaced the ink will go too! haha

"Anyhow, I sure hope that Apple eventually acknowledges this problem in a more public fashion. And I hope that new MacBook purchasers don't also suffer the same fate as I did. It's incredibly frustrating."

they did acknowledge in a public fashion, as well as fixing all the macbooks that are affected.

Ok, now this is interesting...

I was experiencing the widely reported staining, took my MacBook into the local Apple Store, the next day had a new palmrest (they said up to a week, so I was very pleased). It was the different texture I'd heard people mention, and it felt better too, and of course was nice and clean.

3 weeks later, it's staining again. This time, it's darker (less yellow) but still the same type of shade (i.e. not just dirty). I've been keeping my hands extra clean after having gotten this fixed once, and while I know my hands tend to sweat, I make sure I wipe them off regularly. Interestingly, it's far heavier on the right side, though that hand does stay there most of the time while the other one is only used for typing. My trackpad button, as before, is also discoloring, and so are some of the lower keys (the arrow keys, spacebar).

Anyone else had problems with the version 2 top case?

i had the same problem with my macbook(yellowish brown, dark greyish stains on the palmrest, although mine was only on the right side) the stains werent as serious as some of the other macbook pictures i saw posted but it bothered me(i dont want my beautiful new macbook discoloured :p )...

i bought my macbook in early august around the 15th. its a week 33... the discoloration appeared around the first week in september.

although some people said that isopropyl alcohol wasnt good for the macbook, apple said it can be used to clean apple plastics...so i used isopropyl alcohol as recommended by apple. it removed some of the stain but not much. someone said they had tried using an ordinary pencil eraser...i tried it and it worked well...i would switch off between erasing and wiping with isopropyl...i used a bounty paper towels with the isopropyl alcohol and erased pretty vigorously with the pencil eraser...now my macbook looks like it did when i got it in the mail :)...hope this helps some people...

BUMP for good reason,

I am about to send away my macbook for the discoloration fix..
but i also have some small issues with the area around my screen, like the bezel (it may be called).
Mine looks fine, but it seems when i press certain areas the front greyish part 'slips' under the outer shell part.. Other places it seems they are solidly fixed together.. it kinda bugs me just cause i know its there.
Also some places around where ist says 'macbook' it seems to have pulled away from te screen.. again minor.

The question is, if i send it in for the discolouration, can i tell them about this issue and have them replace the front bezel thingy as well?

or do they replace that anyway to match the new palm rests?
Thanks

They replace the bezel too during the procedure. Problem solved.

Rich,

Did Apple allow you to upgrade to the black MacBook due to the discoloration? How did you go about this? How much more did it cost? I want to upgrade because I don't want to get a new white one that just discolors again.

Thanks!

- Rob

Aw c'mon...just having a bit of fun. This latest uproar does make me glad that between MacBook #'s 2 and 3 I opted to upgrade to the black model (yupp, I actually went through 4 before getting one without problems....argh!).

Cheers, Rich

Time to get fixed.

I have the miscoloration prob aswell. I did not want to admit it at first, being somewhat of a fanboy, but now my battery went kaputt too, so i guess i should get it fixed as soon as possible.

I was kind of hoping that they would simply slip my HDD in a new 'book to speed up the process, but alas, it looks like they just change the plastics in Sweden too. My "hope" is that the battery problem i have is so total that the entire 'book has to be repaced. My case has a bit of a "Mad Max" look, from a few too many trips in my bag full of keys and junk.

Yes, i know, i am an idiot.

(Tip: for a quick fix, use a pencil eraser, as described above. Works surprisingly well, temporarily)

Oh damn, my MacBook started to get colorful (week 19).

I live in Denmark. I can't really be without the computer until somewhere around January, since I have to do fockloads of homework, and also manage our family christmas photos in the holiday.

I might then wait around 10 days until MacWolrd, until iLife '07 (Leopard) are released. Do you think they will just change my topcase, or give me a new unit.

It also has the whiny. I know they will replace my motherboard, but if they have to both replace logic board and top case, wouldn't it be easier for them to just give me a new one?

And if I'm offered a new one, can I demand a refund instead, and throw in the extra cash for an MBP?

Thanks:D

I guess it is good that I did the same to my Macbook, that I did with my previous iBook!

I sold it with no trackpad wear, and the button for the mouse was as good as new!

::EDIT:: Oops, forgot pictures!

So I have a macbook. White. It has gotten seriously discoloured. I called Apple, and they said.. ok let's check your serial number. Turns out that my macbook is suppose to already be 'fixed'. However, There is nasty discolouration on the trackbutton, and on both palm rests. Anyone else have any comments about 'out of serial number' MacBooks? Has anyone gotten one of these fixed? The issue is NOT fixed, in my opinion.

i have you tried iklear?

Magic Eraser works!

Sent in Macbook after one month of owning, got it back good as new.

Within a week, SAME THING happened (discoloration).

Tried magic eraser. little bit of water, a few scrubs (repeated wetting then drying), and my 'book looks great. very pleased.

It could be your sweat.

I know the pitting that can occur on MBPs can be caused by acidic sweat, or an inferior batch of anodized aluminum.
