If anything, mine has too much red in the white, but it's a uniform colour. I also went through a process of calibration on my MacBook Pro's screen (using a Spyder 4) and it also has the same red tinge (compared to the very blue hint it had before), i.e. both iPad 3 and MacBook Pro's screens match with the same slightly pink shade of white. Neither are as cold as my Dell U2711, which was also calibrated using a Spyder 4 but which allows the individual colours to be tweaked.

In short, I believe as long as the colour is uniform over the whole of the screen, it would be possible to calibrate it to what ever white level the user chooses, should Apple ever add a feature to allow you to select an ics profile.

If it's not suffering from light leakage or colour blotches, there's no point in returning it.

Your post is good news to me. Mine is the same as yours in every way it sounds. I went to the Apple store today to compare, and i actually noticed the ones on display were free of a hint of red, except for one or two others, but i think they had yellowing as the greys didnt looks as nice as my unit. The whites appeared ever so slightly whiter, but i think under normal lighting conditions (i.e. not a brightly lit store) these units would have looked slightly yellow. So i thought its not worth the risk doing a swap and getting one with maybe un-uniform colour, dark spots etc. I did see one unit there which looked very good, but that was one out of about 8 i checked. I'm not liking those odds much and its was only fractionaly better. If not for a side by side test you would not have notice anything.

If you calibrated your Macbook and it looks the same as your ipad then this is very good news indeed. Lets hope Apple allow some slight colour tweaking one day.

By the way I also i have a U2711 and that is a very cold white compared to everything! Awesome screen though, colours are so vibrant, everything looks inferior to it ;-)

Follow-up: I just called Apple. They offered me to pick it up and have a tech dude check it out at no cost.

However, the call center agent specifically told me that the techie would only have the standard apps at his disposal so I needed to describe the issue in a way that he could reproduce it with a browser etc. That surprised me a bit. I actually thought they'd have some tools to measure colors or something.

So I guess I'll get it back with a note saying that nothing could be found. Oh well, I did everything I could. If nothing else, I'll trade it in next year for a 2nd generation retina display. And I will definitely order it online because then I get a 2 week window to send it back.

Just be aware that Apple isn't so willing to hand out replacements for "yellow tint" as some people here seem to believe.

I have a new iPad that has an uneven yellow tint in the upper left corner. I actually first discovered this while reading stuff, got upset and then went online to check if I was the only one. So I landed here. A lot of people who I showed the iPad in landscape mode confirmed easily that it's "darker on the right side".

Genz - Thanks for the feedback. This is just another reason for me to wait longer before I purchase an iPad.

However, the more I research Windows 8 and the Lenovo Yoga, the more I like the concept of an ultrabook and tablet in one device; 13" of media consumption and creation. For me, that is a better fit than the iPad. So the longer I delay my iPad decision, the more likely I will get the Yoga instead.

Yeah, it is a cold screen by default. You need to set the colour setting to warm to get close to the 6500K white reference point (which is daylight). I intend to have another go at the MacBook Pro and see if I can get it nearer to the Dell. Either that or go for a warmer setting on the Dell, maybe around 5800K, which will make it less cold and blue.

It's worth noting that when comparing two displays, your eye will tend to see one as the right white level, depending on which it is most used to looking at, even if the other display is more correct. My iPhone 4S display is very cold, something I wasn't aware off until comparing it side by side with my iPad 3 and other screens. Now I instantly see it as too blue, but I have no way of warming it up.

Got two 32GB from Samsclub on the launch date. both were made by Foxcom in Feb (serial starts with DMPH7) and both has yellow tint. It is so obvious when compared with iPad 2.

Went to apple today and bought one but returned due to backlight bleed. Then bought another at the same apple store with better backlight bleed. Both iPads were NOT made by Foxcom in April (serial start with DYTHH). Both have cool white.

If you want cool blue white, get one with serial starting with DY, not Foxcom. Anyone know who is the manufacter with DY

I told them that my iPad had wifi drop issue. Dont want to deal the hassle of explaining yellow screen issue. It was a pain with my iPhone 4.

HOLY MOTHER OF JOBS! I don't want to jinx it, but I think I finally got a good one. Just returned from yet another trip to the Apple store. I've lost track of how many this makes it...it must be 5 or 6. But finally, I got one with no glaring pink splotches, no hot yellow splotches, no gaps in the bezel foam, no dead/stuck pixels.

Overall, the color is warmer than the one I just returned, which I didn't realize was so magenta until I compared it to this new one. It's definitely not yellow, but it's a pleasing warm neutral.

Wow, congrats man! Glad you finally found one. Got my 8th today and told myself that this is definitely it. I was happy at first but the left side of my screen definitely has a yellow tint. It's as if there's a gradient across the screen. I think I might officially give up at this point. I can't justify settling knowing they aren't all like this. :(

Would your wifi totally drop for prolonged period? I recently noticed heavily used sites like FB have been super slow to download on my safari but I assume it's the site since I have 3 bars.

Does your iPad show no wifi bars? Or can't connect to internet at all?

You missed the point. He lied and used WIFI rather than fight the screen pushback from Apple.

Don't expect the next gen iPad (4) to have no screen issues like we have with iPad 2 and 3's. The problem will likely get even worse as the manufacturing / assembly is done in China. With 50 cents an hour labor and 30+ hrs of overtime working as slaves they will not be able to do their job well. This is part of the reason why some iPad owners experience specks of dust, hair, finger prints, and some other dried liquid (snot and saliva) under the glass. Also how the product is put together like the bezel and the screen. Apple, just like the rest of other comapanies, are trying to save money on cost to build... Trust me. Things will get worse in the future unless they build the plants in Japan with premium labor and other quality processes.

Another follow-up: I just checked my Repair Status and it says "Product Replacement Pending". So I guess they recognized the screen as faulty and are replacing the device. So now it's fingers crossed that the next one is better.

Does anyone know how big the chances are to get a refurbed one? (They might actually be better due to another round of QC for the screen...)

I am on day 14 with my 2nd replacement unit. My unit sounds exactly like yours - nice uniform screen but pink (both previous displays had dark yellow tint on one end). I have been thinking I would keep it and then today in carpool line, I was trying to read NYT website and the display was so dim on 100% brightness that I could barely read text. This was in bright but not direct sunlight. I also noted while reading in bed in pitch dark room last night that when I lowered brightness below 50%, it was too dim to read and better at about 60%. My iPad 2 needed to be set at lowest brightness setting to use in bed.

This all got me to thinking that something is definitely wrong with this screen so I took it to Apple store to compare to displays. Mine is obviously more pink than all of the other white units I examined (they had warmer screens) but my screen actually seemed a bit brighter on 100%, if slightly pink. Brightness seemed similar all along the spectrum on all units I looked at - below 40% is extremely dim. I stood there and played for about 30 minutes, trying to make a decision and then left the store without making a return or exchange. I am afraid I will end up with another uneven screen or worse if I switch. The genius warned me my unit falls within acceptable range and will be non-returnable after today while noting that it does have a pink tint (before I could even bring it up). At least this unit's screen is uniform, if slightly pink. I am thinking that the new model iPad simply runs less bright. Perhaps to boost battery life or facilitate retina display? I bought my parents an iPad 2 3G last week and it was noticeably brighter and more neutrally tinted out of the box. Anyway, I have until 9:00 tonight to make a decision. I will confer with my husband this afternoon and decide. I am seriously tempted to return and buy another iPad 2 at discounted price but I hate to give up the retina effect and 4G speed. My units have all been white Verizon 64gb units (except preorder which was AT&T. First was build week 7, second was week 3, and this pink unit is week 5, DL (Foxconn factory).

The iPad 2 is a hell of a lot brighter in terms of led brightness... This is normal.... The new iPad screen uses 2.5 times more power to light the screen. When are people going to stop being so paranoid and just talking themselves into returning. If you checked yours against ones in the store and it was the same in terms of brightness then what is the problem? They are different screens made by different suppliers. The pink thing is minor and only in certain conditions, return it and risk getting dead pixels, yellow, dim corners, light bleed, scratches on the back etc... You decide... But stop looking for problems.

That is correct. By average the iPad 2 will have more neutral whites, cleaner whites, and less uneven whites. It's still crap, but not as crappy as the iPad 3. Ask yourself. Do you want a brighter and whiter screen? or dimmed and yellow pinkie screen? You want uniform or not uniform screen? You know what the obvious answer is.

but I hate to give up the retina effect
Why?? You like having blurrier and softer images in the video playback? With the retina screen most videos, except for 1080p, will look blurry. This is because the device is trying to upscale and reprocess. The scaler built in the iPad 3 is no cutting edge. For God sake this is only a $500 device. Can't expect super scaling. This is one of the biggest reasons why I didn't even buy the iPad 3....as I knew it's going to be a large downgrade for me.

Doesn't matter what serial number or when it was manufactured. All is assembled in Chinese factory with 50 cent / hr labor. Only the super lucky one will get the golden one. Low standard manufacturing is the best way to describe.

But stop looking for problems.
It's not about looking for problems. The problems is right in front of me. it's blocking my view.

I'd like to be offended because I don't think I am specifically looking for problems. This is my first Apple product I haven't been 100% satisfied with right out of the box (I've owned literally dozens of Apple products) but I think you are actually right and I could do far worse than a pinkish screen. So thanks for the polite kick in the seat! I do know that straight out of the box, my launch day unit was yellow and dark on one end. I didn't need to read MacRumors to be disappointed.

iPad 3 is:

- Thicker
- Heavier
- Hotter
- More uneven tints
- Softer, blurrier video images
- Slower in some apps
- More strain on eyes due to small texts.

The only advantages it has over the iPad 2 are:

- More contents from documents or PDF docs can fit into one screen
- Better camera

You would have to be crazy to buy the iPad 3...

- Wear gloves
- Wear colored contact lenses
- Sit further away
- Stop using those apps
- Get better colored contact lenses

:p:p:p

(FYI for those not quite bright enough....this post was a joke).

Nope, mine is $929 device with AppleCare Plus.
The extra you paid isn't going to the onboard scaler. it's other junk, like larger storage capacity, 4G support, and as you said, AppleCare service plan. Throw in the accessories and it's good $1200 or so. It's more waste. For that money you can get a Macbook Pro, something that you can do more stuff with, and less prone to screen tint issues... If you already have that, then save the money to pay off your credit card bills.. Trust me. It will do you good in the long run.

I gues you could call apple to try to do exchange online through apple but they rarely let you exchange if it was in store purchase. I guess it worth a shot. You'll still have to ship back your iPad and wait.
