Although not related to the XR I do believe apple are shipping many of current iPhone Xs and Xs max with ‘faulty’ displays. Both my Xsm have had yellowing displays. I am currently considering replacing but am so disheartened at the prospect of finding a properly calibrated display at this point.
The image is from search results and not of my own device
The strange anomaly in this image is I can’t actually tell which device is in the wrong? They are both showing what TT should look like when activated. One looks overly yellow, the other surprisingly white (for TT active) Which leads me to believe there are lax procedures when calibration of displays is implemented. I assume this is a mechanical procedure at manufacturing level? However, somethings clearly off and such variations in displays should never make it to market without at least some forewarnings that users have options to choose between. One is ugly (to my eyes) the other is not. I know I would prefer if one were labelled (packaged) warm/cool this infuriating and slightly depressing lottery would be a thing of the past for me. Manufacturers should ‘ideally’ sin bin these yellow displays but the financial losses would be too great, so the consumer is forced to enter the lottery, accept the faulty units or complain & return till deflation/defeat or plain tiredness takes over and we simply accept our lot. Many get lucky, many don’t. It is not fair & unacceptable! Quality Control your displays apple.
People will argue that this whole yellow tint thing is to be expected and is the nature of OLED technology etc. I don’t buy that, and imo if a display is showing as yellow where white is expected then it should automatically be considered faulty. We know White displays exist and if there are 2 particular variations of “white” then imo it should be informed before purchase (or on packaging) if a particular device leans to the warm of white or the cool side. Of course this would be impractical for manufacturers to differentiate & market but if we have this knowledge forewarned then I’m sure it would become clear to manufactures the consumers are simply not willing to accept these calibration lotteries anymore and if anything good were to come of it would be truck loads of unsold, unwanted yellow display models is proof enough the QC standards are in serious need of overhaul.
I simply can not accept that this is down to variations between colour shifts etc. Again, and imo many of these displays shipping are faulty & should never make it to retail at such inflated costs.
The image I posted shows something is clearly wrong with one of these displays. They are not my devices and is a random image from search results. Both are out of box, pre-setup and imo the desired iPhone by the majority of consumers is clearly evident, Sadly many end up paying upwards of 1k for the undesirable display that is no short of being actually quite ugly to look at, daily..Only to be told that is just the way of things and/or To be expected. Nonsense.
