I did this about a month ago. My iP4 is chugging along with unlimited data.

Got a 2g iPhone from craigslist for $100. Did the trick.

Blame the FCC, not AT&T. FCC restricts wireless spectrum licenses. Also, the spectrum isn't infinite to support you downloading the latest cutest cat video from Youtube in HD while another 400+ people want to do the same thing on single tower...

I called and they didn't let me get my data back :(

Well I called ATT and selected rate plan support. I got enterprise support due to my discount attached to a FAN. I explained to the lady that I had ATT about a year ago and switched to Sprint. Then switched back due to problems with Sprint (True) and explained that when I used to have ATT I had unlimited data on my phone (Blackberry Curve) and that I was wondering if I would be able to get that added again for "Peace of mind".

She explained that they do not have the ability in their system to add unlimited data and neither do their managers, The only team that has this ability does not consider this an "Authorised Reason" and thusfore she could not help me.

Does anyone else have any tips? Should I try a different call queue option or explain it different or just try again?

Thanks in advance..

Well that rep lied to you. Because they do have the ability as I had it done on my account by the nice lady last night. She was a manager she said, and she also got approval from her boss to do it before she did it. It got taken care of and now my account shows the unlimited data. :)

All depends who you talk too, but it can be done. I also told them that I just paid $700 worth of ETF to come back to them, and that helped convince them. (But I was able to cancel my contract with Sprint with no ETF due to service issues). I talked to their normal customer service rep. Hitting 0 on the menus. I didn't go into a specific area.

Just called again and kept hitting 0.. Got the same response when i explained the situation again, no-one has the ability to add it.. I guess i'll keep calling back later. Whats the worst thing they can do, keep saying no? cancel my contract for calling to much? Oh well.

I came from the evo and used 2.8GB without tethering last month. I'm not saying I didnt expect this when I signed up for the service but if i can save 20-30 a month from overage then I will keep trying!

I tried this also, I spent an hour on the phone with 3 different reps 2 of which were managers and they would not budge despite having 5 years with ATT. This morning I got an iPhone 2G, drove to an ATT store and got a sim card, activated it in iTunes, cut the sim to micro, and now I'm on an unlimited data :)

Wow guys, really surprised you all can't get this done. I was really nice to the rep too and she took care of me without me doing anything special. Got me. Guess I was really lucky! :)

I also went to Sprint for the EVO 4g and came back. :)

Really? because I'm grandfathered into unlimited data and I'm a fairly heavy data user (FaceTime over 3G for 10-20 min 2-3 days a week, Pandora, stream hour long podcasts [TWiT], then average data sipping internet usage [Safari, RSS, FB, Twitter, etc]) and I'm only at 749MB for the entire month. The only thing I don't do (yet) is internet tethering and that's exactly why at&t added the caps. It's pretty hard to reach the 2GB cap if you aren't tethering.

I generally run 3GB-4GB/month without tethering. With tethering over WiFi (MyWi from Cydia), I run about 7GB.

I use facetime over 3G about once a day, browse the internet a lot, check facebook and twitter a lot, stream Slacker radio constantly in the background, and every evening watch about 2-3 hours of netflix.

I don't have access to WiFi anywhere I live or work

Has anyone been able to do this with an AT&T Premier account?

I just got my hands on a 2G. When I get a SIM and insert it and open iTunes does it allow me to choose my plan inside of iTunes?

Thanks

Update: I called back again, Spoke to a rep and explained my situation. He ended up transfering me to a "Supervisor" they looked into the matter and created a case that they had a resolve date of December 8th. I got a case number and they basically said that the case was needed to determine if i really had ATT in the past with an unlimited data plan. I gave them my SSN and for some unknown reason they still could not find my previous account.

I'm not too sure that creating this case is going to help, worst case scenario i guess i just have to watch my data usage :(

i'll keep you's updated

what is a good reason to ask for my unlimited back any ideas?

Because data usage is going to skyrocket as more and more data-intensive apps are developed. FaceTime, streaming video, Pandora -- all those things that are still novelties to many people will eventually become commonplace. But without an unlimited data plan, they could also become really expensive.

I know this has probaly been beaten to death since ATT switched from unlimited data however I've found that since switching from Sprint and the Evo I tend to not do things on my iphone specifically because I dont want to go over my data cap. On my Evo I would watch youtube videos like nuts, always download apps when I was on the go and listen to pandora/grooveshark religiously. Since switching to ATT I cant remember the last time I even used Pandora, or watched youtube videos. AT&T's solution is to use WiFI, however chances are if i'm in an area that has WiFi I will just use my laptop. Thats the reason i bought a mobile smartphone.. To be mobile and not have to worry about finding a hotspot just to download that game/app I want to buy.

However I couldnt justify purchasing an iPhone 4 32GB without a contract, the subsidized cost when signing a contract with AT&T is the only reason I went with them. I've had WebOS i've had almost every android phone Sprint made (I worked there up until about a month ago for 2 years) and I do really beleive that the iPhone is the best device out there right now for me. It really just "works" and besides At&t's high prices and limited data I really dont have a problem with the coverage or anything!

Wish I could have watched Youtube videos on 3G with Sprint and my EVO. Dang couldn't even play them it would just keep buffering. Sprint's data network needs some serious help.

Just got my text this morning and they switched me to the $30 Unlimited 3G plan. Everything worked as stated by the OP.

I'm sorry if someone has already answered this but does this only work with iphone 2g? Will it work with iphone 3G or 3GS? Thanks.

I can confirm that this works. The best part is I didn't have to talk to AT&T at all since I didn't have a data plan yet (refused to pay for the cap) and the 2G activation (including selecting the $20 unlimited data plan that they say doesn't exist anymore) goes entirely through iTunes. I simply activated the 2G, made sure my AT&T account showed the $20 unlimited plan, and then put it back into my 3GS. Data worked great last night and this morning I received the text from AT&T about putting me on an appropriate plan.

Woot!

I'm waiting on a sim card adapter to try it on my wife's iPhone 4.

I called ATT 3 times and finally they were able to put my unlimited back on. No more hunting for a 2g for me!

I contacted ATT about this not too long ago, straight from the horses mouth, since I already have the "Smartphone Unlmited" when I upgrade to the iPhone 4, I can keep it. Unlimited Data. I also have a friend who has had his iPhone since the 2G, has a 4G now, still with the unlimited Data.

It can be done.

This just worked for me. I did it all over the phone, then cut down the sim and inserted in the iphone. The next day it automatically moved me to the unlimited plan. YESSS :apple:

I don't really need unlimited data unless AT&T will release an app, so I can use my iPhone as wireless moderm. No, I am not talking about their 45 dollars crap plan. I am talking about the one that is available on Google Froyo.

I wonder how long before AT&T forces people out of unlimited Data. With inevitable release of iPhone 4G (LTE network), people will have to give up unlimited Data.

I use MyWi, which allows my iPhone to be a wifi hotspot, so I do need the unlimited plan

You will need to either get a phone with Google Froyo or jailbreak your iphone.
AT&T will not give you free internet tethering.
