Didn't you squabble about this enough in your older thread Mr.? I thought you got time-out for arguing this before. Seeking more attention over a point that doesn't matter and won't convince anyone by your 'skillful' arguing? Oh, and didn't you "conveniently" include more steps in between, such as ignoring the fact that many people trying to downgrade are already in possession of TU, and that connecting your iPhone to the computer is (1) not that big a deal and (2) you need to also do that for your method to work. Both methods are fine, you just happened to not be very proficient at using the TU one and got confused along the way. The install is also the easiest install and foolproof application I've ever installed on my Mac.

Nope not the case. I've never tried to use tu. If I did I'd be just fine at it. You still arent getting the point. When new users try to downgrade recommending tu is more trouble then it's worth. There's 3-4 threads a day with new users who get stuck using tu. And it's completely unnessecary.

And just as many posts where posters get stuck editing their hosts file.

Usually one method or the other will work for them.

Seriously got to be a simpleton to not be able to edit a host file...

Totally agree.I'm glad someone gets it. I was starting to lose hope.

This is not a personal attack on anyone who uses tinyumbrella, or finds its functions useful. This is merely stating the undeniable fact that editing your host file is easier, less complicated, and less prone to error then using TU for the first time.

People are quick to suggest TU to new users, and then we have 10 more threads with error codes to troubleshoot 20 minutes later.

Youre conveniently leaving out several steps in between, including downloading the 3rd party application, installing it, configuring it, and then connecting your iphone to the computer, making sure TU detects it (errors galore here), maybe putting the phone in DFU mode, downloading the SHSH blobs from cydia, then hosting a tss server.

Surely thats harder and more complicated than opening a text file, copying the line which I posted in this thread, pasting it in a text file, and clicking save. Right?

I find it amusing that you equate editing host files to typing one line in a word document and selecting save. It seems like maybe you have never done it.

Here are the MAC instructions: There are at least 12 steps.

And here are the windows ones. Eight steps because less security checks.

Yeah...the windows steps you linked to is equitable to opening a text file, adding one line, and clicking save. Did you even read the steps?

The mac version is also a simple edit, although you have to click and drag the file back in the folder, then click authenticate. Real serious computing.

Listen it takes me literally 5 seconds to start the TSS server. Some people struggle to edit the HOSTs file, especially when they're not running with the proper credentials. You prefer editing the HOST file manually, good for you. Well done. No need to attack people who prefer not to.

...Because you have everything set up all ready....see?

This is in regards to new jailbreakers. Do not suggest tu to new jailbreakers. I've already helped out 30-40 people with my simplified method. Just suggest this method to new users. Thanks.

Enough already! Don't tell us what to do. You recommend the way you prefer and others will recommend they way they prefer.

Annnyyyywayyyy.

I opened my Cydia and the top just says "This device has a pending TSS request."

Please - if you can put it in simple terms, it would be appreciated. (The reason I originally JB with Spirit is because I just had to plug in and press one button.)

I went to the site to download the firmware and downloaded 4.0.1 3GS. I changed the line of code in the host file. When I hit the restore button and picked the firmware, it thought about it for a good while and then said that the device was unable to be restored or unauthorized to be restored or something along those lines (I did it late last night and can't remember exactly what it said)

Did I miss something?

Unfortunately the words " This device has a pending TSS request" means your SHSH blobs were not saved, and you have no ability to restore to older firmware. Sorry, you'll have to wait for 4.1 jb.

The reason you got the error is because iTunes contacts Apples servers in an attempt to get a signature, allowing iTunes to move forward. The SHSH blobs are copies of those signatures. Editing your hosts file simply redirects iTunes to Cydias server to look for the signature. If your signatures are not saved, it finds nothing, and iTunes will not proceed.

Thank you so much, kre62. You are so on the money!

I guess I'll be waiting for the 4.1 jailbreak. For future reference, how do I save my SHSH blobs so that I can upgrade when 4.1 JB comes out?

BTW, thanks for not being an a$$ about it too. I've lurked on here for years and always see the posts like, "Stupid n00b, just f&*%ing search and you can find a million threads on it" so I was a little apprehensive about posting my questions. Thanks again!

No worries I try to help.

Cydia saves the blobs automatically as long as you select "make my life easier" which it seems you did. Cydia can only save blobs currenly being signed by apple so in your case that pending request will turn into a 4.1 blob. Future blobs are saved automatically.

For whatever reason, kre62 has become the advocate of what he calls the "simplified" method to restore. (We all know we have been recommending the exact same method to posters to restore since Apple issued the 3GS phones a year and a half ago and long before TinyUmbrella was an option, but apparently none of that matters)

As I read here, many seem to agree with me that bashing the use of TinyUmbrella is wrong.

I applaud those who have suggested (without the need to throw insults) that each poster can decide which option works best for them without others feeling the need to bash the advice given to them.

Unfortunately this is the 2nd thread about restoring that has deteriorated into a bash session. Hopefully this will not continue. It degrades the blog and last time it resulted in some time outs for the participants.
