I guess if the OP doesnt want his macbook then just sell the macbook and use the extra $$ to buy the mbp.

If not why not just sell the macbook and the imac and buy a mac pro desktop and a dell 24" screen + a macbook air (since your getting the funds for a new toy anyway!).

Now THAT's overkill :D he hasn't implied he's any way disappointed with the iMac... and why should he be... great machines, those. Shame about those new glossy screens, but eh.

but... you're missing the part where OP already has a MacBook he doesn't WANT.

Also, what's with the 360 talk all of a sudden?
OP is interested in gaming. Another option is a lower-end Mac and a game console.

Yeah, Sims and Rollercoaster Tycoon. If that's indicative of his gaming, why suggest a beefcake console?

Anyway, I think a MBP could hack that and then some - as mentioned above, when BioShock, Call of Duty, Orange Box, and most of your other typical 360 first personish gaming fare are available to the PC platform (in addition to its own titles), why bother with a 360?

I mean hell, you can even plug a 360 pad right into your Mac+bootcamp for full effect! f anything I'd suggest a PS3 to "catch" any titles he'd otherwise miss out on (GTA4, Uncharted, up-and-comers like Resistance 2, MGS4 etc)

But anyway, no need to add further redundancy to his setup... doesn't sound like he'd be doing enough in the way of gaming to call for a console.

everyone is talking about 17" MBP's, mac pros, and 360s.

i am selling my macbook, and hope to get 1100 for it.
i am taking 200-300 from my own savings (for the past 2 summers i have bought things from garage sales and sell them on ebay) and my parents have agreed to pay the rest. Their isnt money for the other stuff, and i dont like the idea of a 17" laptop (defeats the purpose?)

I think im going to go for the Pro, transfer all my music/movies/etc from my iMac to it, and use my iMac for word processing, keynote, web browsing etc.

Then the next thing you know. You will be complaining about the iMac being to much computer for you....

But what ever..... The OP has spoken.....

Cool. Get the 2.4GHz model (even get last gen's 2.4 as a refurb, if you won't miss multi-touch), you'll see no benefit from getting anything higher than that considering your usage.

If you can make it to a store, before you buy have a look and glossy vs. matte and see which finish would better suit you.

I know, I'm the guy that mentioned that :) I play games on the Mac and via BootCamp. It works, but has its downsides. (rebooting to play a game is annoying.) A console has distinct merits. The transition to Intel also causes some troubles: Diablo II (as an example) only runs on the Mac in software mode on current hardware. (I'm playing this way, as the pain of rebooting is eliminated.)

Besides, he's got two (?) Macs and is considering a new MBP or MBA. Why not add in an Xbox or such to round it out? :)

I am going to have to agree with sticking with your MB and getting a 360 ;)

I can recommend some games if you'd like, and in fact the Xbox 360 doubles as having much, and in some cases more of the functionality of something like :apple:TV.

Also I am a huge naysayer in MBA anyways, especially since it is a 1st gen product, incredibly expensive, and I think if I remember right, the least powerful Mac out there right now.

Mac Mini is faster than the MBA. Faster processor

Well, bigger number at the front doesn't always mean better... MBA's purpose built C2Ds are much newer. Mac Mini at its last "update" had only just gotten around to dropping Core Duo from the lineup for chrissakes - embarrassingly their current processors are comparable to the the first wave of Core 2 Duo MacBooks from 2006.

more ram,

1GB Ram as standard if I remember right, vs 2GB onboard as standard, isn't it?

So, no. Only the potential for a greater amount of total ram - still can't address over 3GB RAM though, can it? Jeez the architecture is dated - the only Mac that doesn't offer wireless N, too, right? ...GMA950? Pfft. Weak stuff.

faster & bigger hard drive.

HD capacity is academic - as for "faster", considering you tried to mention "more ram" in Mini's favour let's be consistent and point out the SSD option on the MBA ...and I'm spent

A stock MBA vs an upgraded top end Mac mini is fair? :D

Anyway, at stock spec I'd always figured the more recent chip, GPU and 2GB RAM would make more of a real world difference than 200MHz clock speed. And then SSD would seal the deal. No?

I'm sorry but your 14, save your money and stop wasting it on stuff you don't need.

Save it for what, exactly? As you said, he's 14 - he's not going to be buying a house, car or IKEA furniture.

You needed the macbook and iPod touch in your signature, did you? Seriously, some people...
