i just realised your location says Tokyo. is it the same there? with regards to, shall we say, the general public, living in perpetual fear of something? anything?

Actually yes, but the fear is more instilled in authority than the common people. Governments, schools, and corporations have taken such a set back due to "security reasons" that there is so much red tape for services that used to be available so easily before. Basic stuff like trash cans at train stations and on the roads... all gone. :(

And now they are proposing to fingerprint and eyescan all immigrants like we're all f*cking criminals...

hmm, come to think of it, there's a lack of trashcans at English Railway stations for the "bomb"reason as far as i can remember.

re: the fingerprints, i'm about to get that done (don't think an eyescan though) as part of my US Immigration.

Oh! you mean bins. :D :p

During a little visit to London once I couldn't find a bin for love or for money. Loads in Manchester though. Even with the old IRA bomb.

As for the whole news story in general. That wouldn't wash in the UK. they'd need permission since we're on a health and safety kick at the moment. I don't like the idea of a little sound box playing music. probably make me jump for one!

Oh goodness. This thread has gotten much more vitriolic than I had intended. It was supposed to be a last bit of fun tailing on the Somebody wants us to see MI3 thread, with a bit of Cruise-sniping thrown in to get people to look at it. Next thing you know, everybody is up in arms over religion.:D

I agree with Boggle that the music idea could have been fun, but for the implementation, but I think that it would have been good to alert law enforcement. An ounce of prevention will take care of a bit more than a pound of cure. Do I think that he was directly responsible for the whole thing, no. But, do can I see his controlling personality and ego forcing him to need to know and try and be involved in every little decision? Yes.

I'd say this tells more about the moronic state of fear people are in these days that anything and everything is a possible threat to them, rather than Tom Cruise and his buddies.

It's not a moronic state of fear. I think seeing a box, or wires sticking out of a news rack, is a legitimate reason to think there could be a bomb in there. What else could it be, right? What other reason is there to put anything other than newspapers in a news rack?

In fact, I think you'd be more senseless for not reporting it to police if you saw something like that.
