Thank you Apple for this.

All Google Assistant and Echo owners hopefully will soon have the same option.
Since day one, many many MANY years ago, millions of owners have wanted to change the wake word on these devices, but both Amazon and Google simply refuse to offer this simple ability.

Now Apple has done this, as normal, hopefully they will be forced to make this change on their own devices.

Apple hasn't done this. Users have figured out a suboptimal and mediocre workaround.

OTOH, Alexa has supported this for years. Not that I would recommend it anyway.

Apple didn’t really do it either. It’s just a workaround that Apple may even take away if they feel it undermines their brand somehow.

I'm surprised they're offering this, as saying "Siri" is a constant advertising feature to those in immediate earshot.

A custom wake word has been available for many years, my top of the line Garmin car Nav had this back in 2006 and indeed there was a pause after confirmation before issuing the wanted command.

Same here, but I like Siri’s privacy and recent faster responses. Sometimes Alexa goes into dumb mode and does nothing.
Now that I have migrated my SmartHome to Matter, I may start getting HomePods
Yeah I understand about your reasoning about dumb mode. But Siri is kind of worse in some situation. I am a big Apple fan. But until Siri gets a little more smarter and I will start considering it.

"HEY SIRI RENAME TO ALEXA" SORRY I DON`T KNOW THAT

But after using Alexa and Siri for years Alexa is better.
I’ve been using Alexa and Siri for many years now. My experience is that Siri works considerably better than Alexa. My household has basically had to stop using Alexa because it’s gotten progressively worse over the past couple years. It doesn’t understand us anymore (that did not use to be an issue) and Siri is almost flawless at understanding us. Alexa isn’t bad, we just find it less useful than Siri for smart home device control and some other tasks.

It’s sounds like you’ve had other experiences; I’m simply offering my experience to show that which one is better is likely situational.

I call complete BS. Maybe if you said Google Assistant - which has been hardcore nerfed due to law suits, I might go for this.... you would be the first person to every say Siri is better than anything.

but really? Alex is superior in literally every way - and it understands everything. It gives correct answers the first time. It can do more than set a timer. The only way this is not made up is if you damaged your microphone on an Alex device.

Siri never works right. Alexa is picky but works seemless faster etc. smart homes when you have too many hubs etc cause conflic with any platform. Love apple but my home works better. These smart systems Are stll in its igrowing cycle.

Finally, I can call her by her correct name. "Hey Stupid #%#%)#, set a timer."

I find it childish and inappropriate to cuss out a digital assistant. I’m not saying that YOU are childish and inappropriate, just that I really dislike the whole concept/act generally. Why do we insist on creating a culture of insult and degradation? It isn’t healthy in my opinion.

It will, and it will be amazing. In the meantime I’m waiting… I’m not getting rid of Alexa just yet. My main concern with Alexa is privacy and security.

And when AI becomes more mainstream It may not like the insults and could take revenge.

This is actually really useful for starting OTHER voice assistants.

For example I've set mine up with "Hey ChatGPT" (a simple shortcut that just runs the standard intent from the ChatGPT app) and it launches direct into a voice conversation with ChatGPT now!
