Totally agree! Or why can't I just hook up my spare SSD to my Apple TV or my Mac and make it my personal home cloud? Save all my music, data, photos to the SSD instead of iCloud.

You can absolutely make your Mac in to a home server

No one is stopping you

I just want the Apple Photos app to have a setting where I can chose which cloud provider my photos sync through instead of it only being iCloud. OR being able to set a default photos app that has the same level of OS integration as Photos does (yeah right, Apple will never allow another app to compete on the same level as their own because it'll get trounced).

You do realize Advanced Data Protection exists, right?(End to End Encryption)

Yes, of course, I'm using it. :) But if your data is stored in China, any weakness the US gov may be able to exploit within the E2EE is useless.

That said, I won't be using Xiaomi Cloud for anything. I'll always be all-in on everything Apple.

China Communist Party is your friend. Upload your photos and get social credit!

All hail Vinnie the Pooh!

My thought is, the broad collection of data of a US resident is infinitely more interesting and useful to the US gov than the CCP.... unless you're storing trade secrets, or other confidential information, that may be of use for Chinese companies.

I would never use Xiaomi specifically, but I love the idea of using Photos with syncing to another service than iCloud. Especially if it was possible to sync with self hosted options.

It doesn’t matter where your data is stored. If end to end encryption is enabled, and keys are with you, you are safe

Don't trust Xiaomi with anything. Aside from the obvious lack of privacy and security, their software services are just plain unreliable.

You are assuming there's never going to be any attack vector, weakness, vulnerability found in the encryption. There have been dangerous flaws discovered in all manner of different encryption technologies. Don't assume "you are safe" because you have a key to a lock.

Well that’s what I wanted in my first post. Just to attach a SSD to the Apple TV and use it as a private cloud.
