With the Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3, Apple announced support for a new Sleep Score feature that's designed to provide you with an actionable overview of your sleep quality.

It turns out that Sleep Score is a watchOS 26 feature, so it is also available on older Apple Watch models. If you have the watchOS 26 release candidate installed, you can see your Sleep Score in the Health app already.

Open up the Health app, choose the Sleep category from the Search interface, and tap on Sleep Score to see your personalized readout.

Apple will rate your sleep as Excellent, High, OK, Low, or Very Low. Scores are calculated based on sleep duration, the time you went to bed, and how many times your sleep was interrupted during the night. Duration is worth 50 points, bedtime is worth 30 points, and interruptions is worth 20 points. Points are deducted for low sleep times, a late bedtime, or multiple sleep interruptions.

According to Apple, an "Excellent" score means that your body and mind have received the rest and restorative sleep needed for the day. High means you got the sleep you need, even though you might not have slept perfectly. OK means you probably didn't get all the sleep you need, while Low means that you didn't get enough time to rest and restore. Very Low means you didn't get enough sleep and your rest level was low enough that it can have a mental and physical impact over time.

Sleep Score is calculated from sleep data collected by the Apple Watch during sleep, or from a third-party device that reports results to the Health app. You technically don't need an Apple Watch to get a Sleep Score, but you do need some kind of device that records sleep and logs the results in the Health app.

watchOS 26 with the Sleep Score, Liquid Glass, and other features will launch to the public on Monday, September 15.

I'm interested to hear how (Apple Watch) sleep tracking has helped others.

I try not to look at my last night's sleep report (if I look at all) until the late evening of the following day. And I like to give my wrist a break and not wear my Watch to bed every few days. It seems like I could easily preemptively blame a bad day on a bad night's sleep. I'm way more (obsessively) interested in tracking my activity throughout the day (closing rings, steps, tracking workouts monthly challenges) than my sleep at night. I might be more interested in looking back over the last 30 days to see any trends/lifestyle effects.

However, I generally get good sleep and don't suffer any sleep-related maladies so I'd be interested to hear from others. IOW, I'm not judging anyone...
 
This is very much welcome! The different aspects seem to be weighted well. I'm glad Apple is finally giving some insightful metrics with all the data the Watch collects.

Can't wait to see how terrible my sleep is lol

I struggle with sleep a lot and wear my Watch to bed every night to collect the historical data. I don't analyze the data much, mostly because it hasn't been useful until now and Apple doesn't offer many tools for analysis. I think the Sleep Score will give more tangible and actionable insights so I'm looking forward to it.

I think I'm at a point where I can maybe replace my Whoop with a new Apple Watch (currently on a Series 4, but I also wear a whoop on the other arm)
 
this is going to be interesting. i'm sure it's useless though, just like the oura sleep scoring. bears no resemblance to how i feel in the morning, that's for sure.
 
What about non-apple smart watches???

So is there a benefit of using the newer watch vs an older generation?

Only the sleep apnea and hypertension detection?

i think sleep apnea detection is in AW10 and beyond. for hypertension detection it seems like they can do it with any generation, or at least newer generations, but we'll see.

theoretically i have sleep apnea and my AW10 has never reported a breathing disturbance. so i think it would have to be really bad for the watch to pick up on it.

Sleep Apnea is available in AW9, as well as hypertension detection.
 
Interesting. I have a Series 8, if any of these features make it to that I will try them out. But I found the Apple Watch to be not my cup of tea in general, the whole idea of closing rings seems totally manufactured and uninteresting to me.

We really have reached peak watch haven’t we. No new chip, marquee features of sleep score and blood pressure trends on older models. Just a few pixels bigger screen and 5G isn’t enough to upgrade for me
