I really hope they don't go that route. I like the iPhone gold color but that would be just a little ridiculous in my opinion.

What they should have is a black MacBook Pro... The new ash can Mac Pro is black so why isn't the corresponding retina MacBook Pro also black?

Have you seen one in person?

They look black in the pictures, but they're actually a glossy, darkish colored metal. I don't really even know how to describe the color, but I'd say it's closer to gray than black. It's hard to describe, and even harder to photograph accurately to reflect the actual color. We have a professor in the department who has one, and it actually caught me off guard when I walked into his office and saw it. That was the first one I'd seen in person, and the promo photos had me expecting a black cylinder. In person, it looks a lot different.

I still miss the black Macbook-which was honest to goodness jet black plastic. I still get "wows" when I pull mine out at school(plus it's really peppy running 10.7 and with an SSD-upping the RAM to 4gb from 2gb helped some also, although not as much as the SSD). I'd really love to see Apple bring that back for a laptop-not only does it look great, but it also feels great-it's not cold and slick like the white Macbooks(and iBooks), but is more "grippy." I don't see Apple ever bringing it back, though, especially when it was discontinued well before the Macbook line met its end.

A Macbook in the finish of the Mac Pro would be very bad. The finish works well on the Mac Pro because it doesn't move around. It would get extremely scratched up if done on a portable device. Similar to the backs of older iPods got. The black Macbooks are still the best feeling and looking portable laptop Apple has ever made. They'll never top that look and feel.

I'll keep beating a dead horse on this...

I don't know what Apple did differently on the plastic on these, but it feels different from any other Laptop(Apple or otherwise) I've ever used. It's not "slick" like the white iBooks/Macbooks and many modern PC laptops, nor does it have the "sandpaper" texture of older PC laptops and pre-G4 Powerbooks.

I'd love to see an updated version with a modern processor and glass "buttonless" trackpad like all current Apple laptops. I know the chances of that happening are probably less than zero.

We've went from boring and ugly beige/platinum boxes to beautiful and colorful works of art, and back to boring aluminum boxes... only a little fancier.
But Apple is bringing color back in! The new 12" Air will come in the 3 colors: Space Grey, Gold, and I think regular aluminum. Other Macs would probably get colors like this soon afterwards.

I saw the render of the golden Air and I really like it. Waiting for the golden Pros :)

I doubt we'll ever see colored rMBPs as the target audience is different on that model. For me at least, a case solves that problem very nicely.

That's why it's good to have choice, space gray would be nice on a MBA.

You mean the black iPhone 5... That's the reason they switched to space gray on the 5s.

Since some of us are throwing the tales on how we got introduced to PowerPC Macs out there, I figured I'd add mine to the mix :)

I was eleven. My Dad worked in the IT industry, doing IT security for a Bank. The house was often filled with a wide range of machines for me to use, but they'd often eventually move on to make way for another. With the range of media types, file formats and file-systems I had no way of saving my work in one place. For high-school it was time to get my own computer.

If luck would have it, my real Granddad (who I had never met since my Mum was adopted) died and left behind some cash for the family he never knew. The plan was to get a nice PC for myself and dump the remainder in a savings account. After going through several PCs with my Dad we narrowed it down to a single Dell PC.

THANKFULLY, I didn't buy it. Because just before I was about to get it, I noticed an iMac G4. It was twice as expensive but it had a moveable screen and took about half the space. I'd never ever seen anything so cool in my life after a lifetime of experimenting with the endless supply of beige boxes my Dad would bring home. I knew I had to get it.

Eleven years later, my iMac G4 is still working. It got me through high-school, college and has since played a major part in the writing of my first three books. It has outlived many a gaming rig and Intel Mac. Best investment in my life. It still screams today.

No, the iPhone 5 wasn't mirrored like the Mac Pro and older iPods are. It was matte.

My 4th Gen iPod touch looked terrible on the back. It was completely marked by something thanks to a dirty plastic snap case, thus the mirrored back got all tainted. As much as i tried to get it off, it was impossible to clean.
