It's amazing how many of you in this thread don't realize that foldables are the future of the smartphone.

Just like flip phones.
Folding phones might be the future of flagship phones, but the slab isn’t going away. I am quite confident folding phones will remain a niche product.
Note: my saying it’s a niche product does not imply derision, nor does it imply a lack of success.

I agree both those features will be impressive, and appeal to a large portion of the customer base. Apple does this sort of stuff better than anyone.
I am personally though, extremely risk adverse. The added mechanical weak point of a hinge, which will frequently be flipped open and shut, along with the ‘crease-less’ gen 1 display tech they are likely to deploy - gives me concerns around QC.
I hope all those worries arent substantiated and it ends up being a huge success - I however will be waiting for Gen 2. 😬
Not every consumer wants a foldable iPhone and Samsung has produced them for years now.

I never said that. I’m saying they are the future. Not that everyone will want one.
The future is already here. Samsung and Google has released foldable phones already.

For me there are many if’s and depends, but in the end I’m sure it’s gonna be a no, I’m not willing to pay much more for a foldable than a regular pro.
They might be the productivity device of the future but I still believe the Apple Watch is the smartphone of the future: all the communication benefits and none of the addictive weaknesses. Also zero ads. And largely theft-proof with the right strap. I don't want in-my-face glasses, just a device thats there when I need it.
In theory, right now a Galaxy foldable is perhaps the only device you need. Its a phone, a tablet and if you plug it into a screen its also a PC. But none of these features have set the world alight and Dex isn't on anyone's wishlist. Apple won't change this because they still want you to buy a Mac. I'd put money on the 'Two iPhone Airs duct-taped together' not even having a video out.
For the record I love the iPhone Air and would, budget permitting still buy the fold model in spite of its shortcomings.

The future of smartphones is smartphone producers continuing to sell smartphones.
To do that, there will always be more aviation and novelty added, to keep the units selling.
So foldable phones are one part of the future of a smartphone, but only one small part amongst many other small parts of the future. A whole is made up of many small parts.
Monolithic attitudes ( "the future is THIS!!!" ) are inevitably wrong - because unless you are 100% correct, you're incorrect, pluralistic visions of the future are far, far more likely to be realized, because you can be "a bit wrong but mostly right".
Beware anyone making categorical pronouncements.

Nooo, i'll never buy a folding iPhone. The days of having a phone with moving parts were left in 2006 for me. I'd end up breaking it, and I really don't need a screen bigger than my Pro Max. I have an iPad for content consumption.
I dread to think how much a folding iPhone will be too! Its got to be £1500+ and thats excessive in an era where people are dialling back spending. I am keeping my 16 Pro Max another year and forfeiting my upgrade this year as I just don't need anything more right now.

For me, foldables are a most unlikely acquisition. I have no need of such, nor any desire. Even if I did want one, pricing is sure to make that at the very least unwise but much more likely unable. As the USD continues to deteriorate in value and product pricing continues to escalate, a foldable falls into the “no chance” category.

Uh, no.
I have a 3rd gen (2022) SE and that's enough phone for me. I do want one with more storage. 64GB is not enough to be able to update the OS and it's annoying to have to delete games and socials just to get the update done and then have to redownload and relogin to each of them.
Funny how I paid $75 for this thing refurbished from Straight Talk like two years ago and even the 64GB models sell for double that now. It's still plenty fast and fine for everything I do so I figure 2-3 years before it's no longer supported and I'll have to pick a bigger phone. Maybe between now and then we'll get a new iPhone Mini of some kind with a screen smaller than 6 inches. Was hoping the 16e would be like that but it's a big old clunker like a regular base model.

yes i will be getting likely 1TB fold and 1TB pro max to go with it
want the fold for the bigger screen and for content on the go. i go for 3-4 miles walks each day and would certainly use it to watch content on the go at times and when i need to watch content. no longer will i need to use my phone for this
