It has angered me somewhat that o2 told me that a replacement iPhone would cost me £490! Where do they pick these prices from? Do that make them up as they go along?

Now it seems they are telling people they can just buy a new iPhone from Apple or CPW for £269 and have it transferred to their existing contract!!

All very confusing - I think o2 needs to get some definitive responses to this question put onto their website ASAP!!

Doesn't matter how many people are getting replies - Its not very reasurring when people on here are calling o2 and not exactly coming away with 100% concrete answers to this situation. The proof will be in the pudding when someone actually looses their iPhone!!

It's not a subsided phone. When you buy one you are not entering into a contract. Only once you activate it does this happen. From the emails people have now had from O2 this also confirms the non-subsided status. This is good news, be better once O2 incorporate this in writing in the T&Cs though.

But the phone isn't subsidised, so why would a replacement cost more than the £269? I'm sure O2 don't give a monkeys so long as you see out their contract.

I know it's said that the phone isn't subsidised but the mere fact that you are committed to an O2 contract when you buy it AND Apple get a cut of that contract means there is potential for subsidy.

When you couple that with the fact that for £70 more than the equivalent Touch you get a dock, a charger, a camera, bluetooth, more substantial case, more involved headphones etc it's possible that there is some element of subsidisation going on here.

In the contract for O2s airtime agreement it states that you must see out the minimum 18 month term or pay the remainder if you cancel early. The only exceptions include: if you purchase a new iPhone from us then your 18 month contract restarts from the date they activate the new iPhone.

Therefore you'll be able to buy a replacement at £269 but your remaining contract time will be reset. This isn't great but its at least better than having to a) sign up to a new contract and b) pay more than @269 for a replacement phone.

Of course the O2 £7.50 insurance works out at a total cost of £130 over 18 months, which is cheaper than a new phone. Depends on how lucky you feel you are :)

just go for the insurance that was mentioned at the start of this thread. If you need a new phone it is the problem of the insurance company to foot the bill. www.cusc.co.uk

The hard sale from the CPW really soured my experience on Friday. I ended up accepting their insurance with a view to researching and cancelling within 14 days if needed.

I too understood that if I needed a replacement phone due to my original being lost or stolen I'd have to take out a new 18 month contract if I didn't have insurance.

Wait till this hits Watchdog.

They did the same to me, really ruined the excitement, of course I told them I wasn't interested in their amazing insurance deal.

I wouldn't have been surprised if they had hired someone to steal my iPhone the moment I left the store. :D

mines covered on my home insurance but may extend my halls insurance to cover it as iff i do end up having to pay more than 269 as endsleigh its 39 for the yr(3.33 a month) and the value of the hadset is unlimited and they said they will pay our more if i had to pay more than retail value plus it covers airtime missuse

Just got off the phone to 02 regarding my iphone insurance when i was getting my phone they scanned the iphone in and the insurance then the terminal broke so i got passed onto the next guy and he scanned it in but as it turns out forgot to re scan in the insurance! (helpful) so it's a good job nothing happened in the last few days.
Anyway when i was phoning them up to see if i had insurance or not i asked the guy all the questions that had come up on this thread.

so you get a replacement handset if it is lost, damaged or stolen there is an excess of £25 to pay.
Your calls are covered up to £3000 if you tell them within 48 hours.
You can get out of the insurance plan with 1 months notice.
It is a international insurance plan, be worth looking a bit deeper into that some countries might be exempt?

the account is therefore not tied into the actual handset!

He said the iphone has no special insurance policy it works the same as any insurance policy they do for the other phone.

I haven't read all the thread but, my bank account covers my phone (which is not an iPhone) up to a value of £400.

LOL I don't insure $500 purchases. What a waste of money.

Buy a $350,000 house....insure that.

Buy a $35,000 vehicle....insure that too.

Your health, yeah maybe that as well ;-)

Don't waste money for insurance on personal items.

Is it a waste of money? You compare it to a house, so lets compare.

My house doesn't have a nasty habit of falling out of my pocket and hitting the ground.

Chavs on their bikes very rarely try and knock my house out of my hand as I walk down the street in the hope they can cycle off with it.

Thanks to the wonders of modern brickwork, my house isn't particularly susceptible to water damage.

Whilst I enjoy a glass or seven of vino, I very rarely loose my house 'in a bar, or was it a cab, or hang on didn't I get a tube somewhere'

:D

I now think I've got the definitive answer from O2 in regards to what happens if your iPhone is lost or stolen and you don't have O2 insurance:

"If your iPhone is lost or stolen and you also don't have Insurance on your account, you can buy a new iPhone by paying the £269. You don't need to buy a new contract, as we'll transfer your services to your new iPhone.

You can continue with your 18 month contract after you've transferred the details on your old iPhone to your new iPhone."

I had specifically asked them whether the existing 18 month contract continues, or whether you have to start a new one. So, you can but a new iPhone at the standard price from wherever you like (Apple or O2), and simply continue with your existing 18 month contract.

Your maximum loss is therefore £269 plus the cost of any calls that someone may make before you report your phone lost or stolen. Unfortunately, the latter could potentially amount to a very significant amount of money!

By the way, this answer was given to me in writing.

Further to rushmere's post, here is some futher clarification. I will post the reply I received from O2 in full (emphasis mine):

Hello Luke

Thank you for contacting us about replacing an iPhone if it's lost or stolen.

If your iPhone is lost or stolen and you have a replacement we would simply register the replacement handset and SIM on your account. You can then continue with the same mobile number.

There would be no new 18 month contract as we would just attach this to your existing account.

I hope I've explained this clearly for you. If there's anything else we can do for you, please reply to this email.

You can also visit our online help centre at:

I have a question,

I requested o2 insurance when I bought my iPhone, and on the leaflet it says all I had to do was activate my phone within 72 hours, which I have done.

Is there anyway of finding out that my cover has started on their site?

Thanks

I received an email from O2 yesterday (3 day after buying the phone) saying that they had placed an order on my behalf for their insurance. Keep an eye out for it.

Barclays Addition Plus

Hi

I have a Barclays Additions Plus current account which costs me 14.50 a month, one of the many features is mobile phone insurance. So called them this afternoon, and to my amazement she said "we aren't able to insure your iPhone as it was a pda phone!!!

So I enquired as to whether they would insure the N95. "Yes sir, we could insure that" I asked her to explain why the nokia N95 which has more smartphone/pda features than the iPhone wasn't classed as a "pda phone" yet the iPhone was.

She said "the N95 is a primarily a phone that has other features whereas the iPhone is a ipod that makes calls" I said really slowly i-PHONE and then tried to convince her that the iPhone is just that a phone with some amazing features.

As you can imagine I got nowhere, after speaking to her manager who was as adamant that "the iPhone is just a glorified iPod and we dont insure iPods"

I'm pulling my hair out!!!

I'm now awaiting a response from the complaints dept. and from my bank

I'm hoping it will be sorted out soon, if anyone else is having success or similar problems with bank account provided insurance, please let me know so I have as much ammo as possible when I speak to them again

Cheers

I have one of the NatWest fee accounts. Registering the phone online there is nothing in the drop-down menus for an iPhone, but on calling them they said it was simply because they hadn't got around to updating those lists yet. I was told to choose "PDA other" as opposed to "Mobile other" so they class it is a PDA too, but in this case they will insure it.

Luke and Rushmere,

Thank you for posting your responses from O2. Its good to know that this is how things stand. I knew CPW were talking crap. Off to write a letter of complaint now!

I've just done the same. CPW told me that I would have to pay £900 if the phone was lost, and they where the only people on the planet that would insure it.

Hi Russell

I would point out to them that if it is not primarily a phone then why is it totally usless/non functional without a mobile phone contract? I would also get them to send you their defination of a 'mobile phone'.

Kind Regards,

Will

O2 Apologised for CPW behaviour

I took out insurance with O2 yesterday and took the opportunity to hi-light my own experiences with the carphone warehouse - being told insurance was compulsory and would cost £40 per quarter. The O2 rep said that they were aware that this had happened and apologised profusely, stating that they had taken on CPW to assist in sales of the iPhone and it was obviously disappointing that this had soured the experience for people. I never would have bought my phone from the useless muppets but for the shorter queue. However, am still waiting for it to appear on my credit card account. Sadly I shall have to own up if they fail to bill me as I'm that sort of person!

I've said it earlier in this thread, Halifax offer an account similar for ten pounds and they had no problem insuring my iPhone.
