You know it's time for a new computer when...

when o when

for this college kid, the new mac time (hopefully an octa core intel mac pro(or whatever the heck they call it)) will be when he heads off to grad school, or maybe sooner depending on if we see 42 inch plasma viiv macs WOOT.
 
It's time for a new computer when it costs as much to upgrade all the software as it would to buy a new computer with the upgrades included...
 
I'll buy a new Desktop when Apple's over to Intel for the pro line and I can dual boot between XP/Vista in order to completely replace my current Athlon 64 Desktop.
 
question and answer at the same time:

any word on what the system requirements for 10.5 might be?
(16, 32 MB GPU? FireWire? G4?)

and what the hell is wrong with beige 😡 🙁

Well, something close to that. Software and hardware for me. I've been thinking about upgrading to the new iLife and changing out the HDD (40-80+GB), optical drive (combo - super) and RAM (768MB - 1.2GB) on my 12" 1GHz PowerBook... and then realizing that I probably would be better served to get myself a new iMac.

I'm waiting until later this year or early next year to do so though, getting a few other things paid off before I take the plunge.

Wanting to get into video editing and the like, will probably actually have use for it in a couple of years. Currently don't even have a digital camcorder.

// edit: though with the speed bump on the MBP... the decision just got clouded...
 
You know it's time for a new computer when ...

... the last time you maxxed out your RAM you paid $650 for 8 megabytes.

Happened to me in 1993 with a DOS laptop, though I bought a new portable in 2001.
 
When starting up your computer takes a big chink out of your schedule

9:00 Wake Up, Get Dressed
9:20 Eat Breakfast
9:40 Turn On Mac
9:40 Watch Tv
10:00 Walk Dog
10:20 Work On computer after start up.
 
When you turn on your computer, load itunes, or open a large folder and the hard drive sounds like a cement mixer full of rocks and firecrackers.
 
When you KNOW you're connected to the Internet (because you're doing something with a non-web-browsing application that's telling you that you're on the 'net) and your computer, via Safari, says that you're not connected to the Internet.
 
...when the thing swaps so furiously that even Messenger drops offline in the middle of a conversation

and most of all:

...it's too damn laggy to run Jobs' keynote properly in Quicktime 😀
 
When i bought my Powerbook 7 months ago i was amazed at the fast start up being used to OS 9.

Now its takes almost 4 minutes for the computer to start up.

Ever since i downloaded the last OS X revision.


I bet those MacBook Pro's fly at start up
 
1. Power supply going up. Making loud "buzz!" noise at random times.

2. You test every Linux distro known to man and not feel 100% comfortable with any of them.

3. Windows partition weighed down by virus / spyware protection and still getting viruses and spyware.

4. Despite a once a month cleaning of the registry, it's still over-loaded with crap.

5. Your case isn't ventilated enough for your AMD CPU, which is a hot sucker.

6. You have a crappy third-party motherboard.

Yep. That's me. Think it's time to switch yet? 🙄

This is going to be when I upgrade my main machine (my PowerBook) too. I may buy an Intel Mac mini just for fun when they come out, but I don't plan to buy a new main machine until everything important has gone universal. At that point I plan to buy a MacBook Pro.

Anyway, my idea on when to buy a new computer is simply when the things you want to be able to do are impossible because your computer is too slow. When recommended system requirements for apps you need/want start exceeding your computer's specs, it's time to upgrade.
 
When your 4 year old dell laptop completely dies/explodes....and you're stuck using a 7 year old HP 533Mhz with 64 megs of ram. I am limited to AIM and firefox, i cant even use itunes on this thing.

Patiently waiting for my MBP.😀
 
When your P3 sparks!!! Happened to my mother. So she bought a new Dell. 🙄 Wish she would have gotten an iMac. She would have liked it better.
 
You know it's time for a new computer when...

* you start swapping like mad... and you're only using TextEdit.

* while surfing the web, your box starts running very slowly... and you realize that a pop-under ad is using 70% of your CPU.

* no one makes the right kind of SCSI hard drive to upgrade your computer anymore.

* your box chokes on mp3s encoded any higher than 96kbps.

* you're using a Netscape browser.

* there is a button on your keyboard that will turn your computer on.

* you like MacOS's built-in theming ability.

* you can get more done on a TI calculator.

I hear you brother, mine said this the following after I had typed in "n" into a new file.

My co-worker realized it was time for a new computer when I informed him that I could fit his entire HD contents (1 GB) in my RAM. 😱 😎
 
Two reasons!!!

1) When my existing computer explodes.
2) The Rev.b of a major upgrade, i.e. intel Macbook pro, or introduction of powerbook G4 al.
