When you think it's a good idea not to be able to replace the battery yourself.

When you think it's a good idea to have a mechanical flap with plugs in it.

When you don't care about footprint or huge bezels.

When you care more about looking good at starbucks than getting work done.

When you're convinced that looks make up for incompetence.

when you're convinced that it doesn't matter how you perfom, but rather how you look while performing.

when you're willing to let a big corporation do with you as they please.

When you smile while they do it to you and ask for an encore.

Handbag?

Oh, and when...

- you recently bought a spare* due to the machine going for Applecare like a yo-yo because they won't fix staggeringly obvious problems without hanging onto it for a ridiculous amount of time.

*How much you kick yourself for doing above (or not) depends on how much you're addled by the Reality Distortion Field of course. I hurt all over.

Very true. That reminds me of the old Jags: You had to have two, as one was constantly being repaired.

When you think it's all fine and dandy to have to add Applecare with the anticipation that it (Applecare) will see a lot of use.

Oh, forgot:

When your computer can't be used as a paper weight, but will be excellent as a door stopper.

You know you're a MBA owner when...

You wait 8 hours for a little LED to go green

and

You can cut your birthday cake with your laptop

You know your an MBA SSD owner when you realize how relaxed you are when writing because your computer isn't making even the slightest sound to disturb your peace.

That is the future of computing.

when you actually bought it for what its supposed to be used for, not as an all in one computer as some people are making it out to be in this thread.

(that being said some of the ACTUAL problems are simply unnacceptable)

your fans dont blaze constantly?

But then you realise that you can't hear anything because the fans have made you deaf trying to cool that overheating little bastard.

That is the future of computing.

Edit:
your fans dont blaze constantly?

He he, alike minds!

When you make believe the MBA is supposed to be nothing more than an oversized PDA ;)

Wow, touch of bitterness here. No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing one of these on you. Besides, for many people the air does exactly what they want it to without all of the crap that you don't need that adds weight and bulk. Just because it is not for you does not mean that the air is nothing but eye candy.

i dont own one, but I know what its marketed to be, an ultraportable, and thats not a multimedia machine.

(it still shouldnt crash when watching videos like ppl have said)

other than that its a web browsing, note taking, machine.

you know your a MBA owner when...

¡you realize u just spent $1700 on a piece of s**t that cant watch full screen youtube videos!

¡You have more ****ing money you need because you have to buy time capsel, and rent movies on iTunes just to watch movies because Steve jobs was a ****tardand didn't but an optical drive! ¡You need to spend over $3000 to make it a halfway decent computer!

...When you understand that 90% of people only need a higher horsepower computer for less than 1% of their computing needs (if ever).

Tosser, it's not about looking good. It's about what you need for your individual needs. For me it's about convenience. For coding, iLife, iWork, web surfing, etc, you don't need anything else. I have been using computers since I was in 5th grade, and the MBA (for my needs) is the best computer I've ever owned. It has just enough horsepower and lots of convenience.

Why do you focus so much on the whole "looking good" and "appearance" thing? I think you protest too much. What, do you think we're all super-rich, latte-swilling, suburbanite yuppie, balding men going though mid-life crises who need MBAs as status symbols? I might be half of those, but I couldn't care less about a status symbol computer.

...when you have nothing to complain about.

...when you've multiple death threats from those who are insanely jealous.

...when every time you look at it with a worry of some sort, you instantly feel better and remember that it's almost indestructible!

Even though this :apple: and me are still on our honeymoon - seeing as I've only had it a few weeks - I have no complaints about core shutdowns, memory issues, lack of a DVD drive, or anything; because I knew when I bought it, that it was going to be a work machine.

When you understand that you have need to watch a video on youtubem but feel a pressing need to trim the voltage for your computer not to overheat.

Actually, I don't think you're super rich. I think you bought into hype, especially the dude who calls the MBA an "ultra portable".

I might be half of those, but I couldn't care less about a status symbol computer.
Good for you.

Well, Tosser, aren't you the negative laddie. Do you actually own or use a MacBook Air? If not, then why is it that you feel so compelled to badmouth it?

… when you feel compelled to claim that one shouldn't critisize shortcomings of the MBA, unless the person critisizing it bought one despite said shortcomings.

LOL,
When you have to pretend there is nothing to critisize with regards to the MBA because noone is holding a gun to anyones head. (expl, if needed: It's logical fallacy).

When you pretend the MBA is an "ultra" portable computer.

yes, because its not extremely thin, and lightwieght at all.....

i forgot it wieghs as much as a truck:rolleyes:

When you feel compelled to pretend someone criticising the MBA is claiming it weighs as much as a truck

I know it's not a definition per se, but "ultra portable" is stretch. "Super light and slim-looking", might be a good description.

Ultra portable to me are the size of the Q1 and OQO - and certainly not a computer with the footprint of the Macbook.

to each his own i guess, but its deffinatly an ultraportable LAPTOP as opposedd to an ultraportable sub-notebook.

Isn't that like saying "it's a ultra portable (as in carrying) ferry, as opposed to a ultraportable dinghy"? It's the "ultraportable" that is the defining size, not the stuf afterwards.
The reasoning of course being, that notebook, versus sub-notebook is a matter of size, thus - if you choose to differentiate with those two terms as well, all of sudden it's just a light, slim notebook, and such a thing I'd never call ultraportable. To me you might just as well begin to call anything ultraportable: Well, it might not be ultraportable mp3-player, but this Naim audio system with Beolab 5 speakers is ultra portable too! Or if you have a problem with that, exchange the naim system with the Apple "hi-fi" speaker.

the thing is, i dont consider it a real laptop if it doesnt have the footprint, those other things u mentions are kind of fringe toys that i just wouldnt use. i love the laptop form factor, and for portability in a full sized laptop, its all about thickness and weight

Hmm, I'm willing to bet that reason for that is the keyboard size especially. The thing is, the MBA could be quite a deal smaller without loosing screen real estate and keep the full size keyboard, all the while loosing quite a bit of the footprint. And, surprsingly enough, it'd still be a "full-size" laptop. But the reduced footprint would get it at the barrier of "full" useability, while retaining everything it does now.
It all comes down to making the poor design choice (from an engineering standpoint) of tapering the sides as much as they did.

Anyway, it doesn't matter if you'd personally use the OQO, my point is that those were years ahead of Apple, and because of that they sort of set the standard of what I consider an "ultrportable". I wouldn't use that as my everyday computer either, but then again, that was never my point.

You know you're a MBA owner when...

you need to buy another computer to install a program from disc.

Your phone is thicker than your computer.

Funniest one yet.

To chime in:

... when you wish Apple could have made a real 12" Power Book replacement

... when a 17" MBP owner sits next to you and opens up his hi def screen and the bright light blinds you and you can't see your work.

... when you realize that 5 pounds is too much for you to carry

... when you blindly assume that Apple changed the ultra portable game with the MBA, when they didn't.

... the only good things you can say about your computer are it's size and it's backlit keyboard, and MBP owners already have the backlit keyboard.

... You have to spend $3000 on a computer with only 64GB of HDD space and NO optical drive and 1 USB port.

... when you sound like the iPhone fanboys/girls and love the machine for no other reason than the Apple logo.

Seriously though, I think the Air is a very niche product, and if I didn't do the work I do I'd probably get one. :D Though I still think the Sony TZ does a better job at being an ultra-portable. If it ran OSX the Air would take a back seat.
