Seriously though, I think the Air is a very niche product, and if I didn't do the work I do I'd probably get one. :D Though I still think the Sony TZ does a better job at being an ultra-portable. If it ran OSX the Air would take a back seat.

my thoughts exactly, which is why i dont understand when people bash it for not having the features taht products not in that niche have.

... when you've used the MBA as your only computer for 3 months, were generally happy with it, then you bought a 15'' MBP to act as a more solid "only computer", and are still happy about your original MBA purchase

When people with a 17-inch tank of a computer tell you you shouldn't have bought your computer because it lacks sufficient functionality.

When you realize some people will never understand what portable means.

When your computer in its bag weighs less than most computers.

when you don't ever burn CDs or DVDs so don't miss the "lack" of inbuilt drive.

when you only ever plug your iPhone in so don't miss the "lack" of USB ports.

when you have never before taken a battery out of a laptop, so don't see the inability to do so as a design flaw.

when you use it for what it was intended, which is not a 17" multimedia powerhouse.

when you feel sorry for the people who have had core shutdown problems, but are glad that you haven't had any issues with yours.

when you appreciate that the build quality makes up for it not really being "ultra portable".

When you understand that you have need to watch a video on youtubem but feel a pressing need to trim the voltage for your computer not to overheat.

My point exactly. It's all about your individual computing needs. If the MBA doesn't meet your needs, then fine -- don't buy one. Move on.

I think you bought into hype, especially the dude who calls the MBA an "ultra portable".

Is it "buying into hype" if I think this is the best computer I've ever owned because (for me at least) it is a great balance of portability, size, and performance?

Is it buying into the hype if I genuinely enjoy using this machine?

Buying into the hype is when you purchase the MBA 10 minutes after Steve Jobs pulled it from that manilla envelope, then 2 weeks later hated yourself for being that impulsive, than rationalizing that it was a good purchase to keep yourself from depressing over the $2k you spent on it. But read these MBA forums, the people who bought them seem to really love them. That's not hype!

When you understand that you have need to watch a video on youtubem

need?

... When you're weakling and can hold up 5 pounds....

... when you leave your keys at home because they are too heavy and not small and sexy enough.

... When you feel the need to suggest that no other laptop is portable.

... When you assume that people who make honest criticisms of your sexy book are doing so because they are forced to buy one, or can't afford one and are jealous even though they are just making them to show the shortcoming of the book.

... When you sound like an iPhone fanboy/girl... said that one already but reiterating just incase people missed it the first time.

p.s. I am not taking any of this stuff seriously so have at it. :D

...you're arrogent enough to start a thread based loosely on a Jeff Foxworthy joke that wasn't funny the first time round to flaunt your unrequited love for an aluminum sleeve of parts.

Who am I kidding, I love all Macs!!:D

The air doesn't suit my needs though because it lacks support for firewire and doesn't have a dedicated graphics card.

[btw, I *do* think the MBA has some flaws. I, for one, would really appreciate an ethernet port.]

You know you're an MBA owner when you're about to leave for a 20 minute walk to the nearest starbucks with your friend, and would still want to carry your laptop with you.

Haha thats what I was thinking! Mine gets blazing hot just sitting on my lap while browsing websites that use flash!

I still wouldnt trade it for a five pound computer though. never.

I was about to say 'particularly well-ventilated basement' but I was initially wary of pushing any potentially accurate buttons...

Touche ;) very funny. Been camping... hated it... that stove is heavy when you are just carrying it with you to the camp site, let alone backpacking with it.

... when you marvel at the solid construction of an Apple computer, more solid than the MB or MBP, then marvel at how Sony could build an 11.1" book with two USB ports and optical drive, and still make it lighter.

I could care less how a Sony is constructed. I need Mac OS X. However, looking briefly at those computers, I've noticed they've got lots of things I don't want (small screen, ugly case, small keyboard, Vista) and lots of things I don't need (optical drive in my second computer, cardreader), and typically a slower CPU -- along with a price tag just as high as an MBA. So I'm basically pretty happy with my MBA. But I do wish it had built-in Ethernet.

...when your paying an extra $1,000 for a smaller hard drive

(i do recognize that an SSD is the future, but at least make it more than 64gb)

Man, I think you need to buy another stove if your _backpacking_ stove weighs more than your MBA :p

you know your a macbook air user when...

... you think of slicing macbook air bashers heads off with your super thin notebook
... you see a super thick 17 inch gaming laptop you feel like taking a memory dump on it
... you tell your size 2 girlfriend she looks fat.
... you always give your friends sh*t about their laptops not fitting in a manilla envelope
... you dont mind waiting 1 min to open Microsoft word but die when you have to leave your macbook air in repairs.
... the only thing you know how to do on a computer is to open word, excel etc and look up your email.

Many Macbook Airs have a nasty issue with stuttering video playback and crashing, kernel panicking, core shutdown when watching youtube or other flash content.... even general video content.

woahhhh. that's weird. i've had mine since the keynote and have never had a problem with video playback. whether it be dvds, youtube (fullscreen), flash... it's always worked just fine for me.
