Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have until September 2009 before Summer is over?

Right. And we all know how good Apple is at meeting release dates. Push, anyone?

It's important to note that anything that crashes an application on the iphone is automatically reported back to Apple. The only bugs that need to be reported are ones that don't crash an application, but rather have buggy implementation (touch interface not reading users intentions and slow downs).

Edit: 3.0 is very stable for me. I found a couple of copy/paste glitches and multi-page safari glitches. I would say it is more stable than the original 2.0 release by a long shot.

What about last year?

remember what they did last year?

That was THE first time they had done something like that - a big software upgrade.

This year might even be a better release because they did it last year and learned from their mistakes

They will make it on time.

Yep, last year they went from the first beta release of 2.0 to final in about 3 months time.

i think they know the cant screw this one up 3.0 has to be rock solid from the start look at 2.0 everyone jumped on apple for it not being ready for public release but i think they will have it tied up by the summer.

dude there are already thousands of developers polishing out 3.0 3 months is plenty of time! Just wait it out and come june/july everything will be peachy. Just like in 2.0 These things take time and effort by the devoted developers(like myself) to get working right.

I'm sure there are lots of developer's working on this.. By that I mean legit developer's not just someone off the street paying $99 just to get this new software... I agree with razor that more than half the people that have the software now don't even know what computer code looks like.. They just want to run around saying that they have the new software beta, so they look cool..

Whatever happens I just hope that the public release of 3.0 won't be the train wreck that 2.0 was. Laggy sms, laggy international keyboards, unstable safari and apps just to name a few. It drove me nuts when I first got my iPhone 3g.

I remember 2.0 and 3.0 is much better. Totally usable.

A lot of people seem to still be equating "app developers who downloaded 3.0 to play with it" with actual Apple developers who fix bugs. People who downloaded 3.0 are NOT "working" on it -- they're TESTING it and reporting bugs. I'm actually an STE (Software Test Engineer -- not for Apple but another software company), and I'll tell you that these situations ALWAYS result in delays. Feedback = headaches.

Exactly. The 3.0 OS will probably be released in September. I very much doubt it will be released in June - that's hardly enough time to work all the bugs out, and I don't think they want to have to release 3.1 a couple weeks later.

And just to clarify, people testing the beta have nothing to do with fixing bugs. This isn't a piece of open source software. All people could potentially do is point out bugs (or point out things that are not bugs), and then Apple's team will have to investigate things. The problem with this type of feedback is that bugs might well be caused by something else (like a random third party app), yet Apple is going to have to look into everything that is reported. It will probably make the process longer, and it won't necessarily equate to a more stable 3.0 release.

Just a thought

Everyone here is assuming the version they have released is the latest beta, there is a good chance it is a staged beta, to give people (developers mainly) something to test against. They may well have a much more finished product in house but cant show the world for all sorts of reasons, like wanting to catch competitors napping for example. Apple isnt exactly known for giving things away, theres always lots of rumors but concrete evidence is rare from Apple themselves.

Am I the only person on earth who had a very stable install of 2.0? It was as good or better than 1.1.4 in every way from day one. Don't ask me how!

Anyway, I think 3.0 and iPhone hardware 3 both in late June. It's enoughtime and it fits with their product cycle.

I'm quite certain that those needed updates will be ready in no time. The trick is not think about it. lol

I'm sure that Apple developers are working on it because of high demand. High demand means higher sales.

My 2.0 was very stable too. I never got why people complained so much. Everything worked great for me.

2.0 was a small disaster. What are you talking about? I had to restart my iPhone once a day... very inconvenient.
Restarting once a day? I wish! I restored my iPhone 3G (and back then, restoring took HOURS!!!) no less than 40 times in the first month, due to a since-corrected Springboard bug, the now infamous 'Apple Logo of Death.' The 2.0 launch was a complete and utter FAILURE, mainly due to the show-stopping bugs. So far, 3.0 doesn't seem to be that bad, although it is in serious need of optimization.

edit: here's my old stomping ground, the ALoD thread at the Apple forums, with 533 replies and tens of thousands of views.

Oh yeah! I remember you! Fortunately, I've never had the ALOD come up. I always kept my installed apps to a minimum though.
