The idea with the oil change is that there is value in EVERYTHING for some people. To some people $39.99 is WORTH it.

Of course here on an internet site full of geeks and nerds $39.99 is a waste of $$ to install an OS. Go up to the countryside in Ohio or some place like that and they'll laugh at you if you even mention paying for one. It's all relative.

I even love how some of you went as far as to break down the cost of an oil change. LOL.

They wouldn't get away with it, if people didn't pay it. People are dumb.

This. People will pay for everything these days, and BB knows that. On one hand its moronic to us, but to people who can barely use a computer it "might" (keyword MIGHT) be of use.

My manager, when I worked at CCity, told me this, "Think of it this way, we may scoff at paying money to clean-up a new PC or install an OS, but we know how to do it. On the other hand, we don't scoff when we need the oil changed, brakes replaced, TV repairs, etc"

Now..some of those things are VERY easy, but some are things I have no clue how to do, and I see a valid reason for spending $ on it.

This is the same company that will take your money to install a portable GPS unit in your car. You pay them to open a box, stick a suction cup on your windshield and plug something into your cigarette lighter. It's also the same company that offers to come to your house and hook up your laptop, in case plugging one end of a cable into a power jack on your laptop and the other end into the plug on your wall is too complicated for you. Are you surprised at all by this?

Typical BestBuy. Airport Express U$ 10.00 more as Apple store, will be funny, if BestBuy is not 5 minutes from the Apple store near my place.

The Best Buy and Apple Store are within 15 seconds of each other if you fast-walk; they're in the same mall.

Not really. But it shows how ignorant your average consumer is these days.

Seriously bestbuy is ripping off people via geeksquad.
If you guys have not seen me on YouTube (SIGNATURE)
I made a vlog and one of the topics was about bestbuy/geeksquad+ITEM= BURNED WASTED MONEY!

it should have a little humor in it. if not i'm sorry.
but 40 bucks is a waste. I think only kanye would do this... (inside joke)

This kind of reminds me of the computer centers that charged a similar small fee to remove Vista from newly purchased PC's and install them with XP instead. :D

Exactly. BB wouldn't get away with it if there wasn't someone who was willing to pay for it. IMO the blame lies more on the consumer rather than BB unless BB was trying to be dishonest like saying they are the only ones qualified to install SN.

This is actually worth it...the convenience of not having to deal with how messy it could be doing it yourself, not having access to a lift to get under your car...

OS installations, in comparison are simple (even Windows is pretty idiot-proof in that regard.) Insert the CD, click the setup icon, and hit NEXT when they tell you to.

Best Buy wouldn't get away with something like this if people just had BASIC computer literacy...

Lift? Drop in the vacuum hose, draw a vacuum and watch the oil come out. Reach down and unscrew the old filter, screw in a new one, add oil and your done. I can change the oil faster in my car than it takes to install an OS on my computer.

Servcie shops would never gt away with charging for an oil change if people had BASIC automotive literacy.

Everyone has their own value of the tradeoff between time and money.

However, you must admit… changing oil is harder than double clicking an icon and pressing a button.

Seriously… there are almost NO options when installing Snow Leopard… you literally just press install and it does all the work for you.

I dunno Spaz, today I helped a client of mine with his new iMac (well he bought 8 months ago) and he still didn't know what Safari was, he didn't know what a "desktop" was, he still didn't know what the Finder was and he uses this machine everyday. He bought it at Best Buy and the Geek Squad came to his house and installed Firefox for whatever stupid reason and they never told him to use Safari. He's extremely illiterate with computers. He can probably change the oil in his car with eyes closed but he didn't even know what the "desktop" was on his Mac.
We can't discount services just because "WE" know how to do something. We pay people to dip Ice Cream for us when we can buy a gallon at the store for cheaper than a Banana Split. We pay people to make sandwiches for us because we don't want to make our own lunch. We pay people for everything, nobody is getting scammed like the way some of those posters here are saying Best Buy does. It's a service, and you don't want to do it, PAY SOMEONE TO DO IT. (Sorry, not yelling at you) :)
Some of the posters here need to get off their high horse, they would jump at the chance to charge someone to do a service that was willing to pay for which that they didn't know how to do for themselves.

Hard is relative - with an oil change, I don't have to update my radio because it is no longer compatible with the new oil, nor do the tires stop working because they are three years old and no longer supported with the new oil...

I do admit to an occasional driver problem after changing the oil, however.
