According to this, both the black and white backs are made of anodized aluminum. It's the inlays that are different. what's the difference between ceramic and pigmented glass? And how does all this play out with scratch resistance?

Aluminum and Glass Body

The back of iPhone 5 is made of anodized 6000 series aluminum — the same material used in Apple notebooks — with inlays along the top and bottom made of ceramic glass (on the white and silver model) or pigmented glass (on the black and slate model).

That sounds backwards to me.

The black iphone 5 has an Anodized surface, while the white phone does not.

Anodized Aluminum is harder and more scratch resistant then non Anodized.

Therefore the White phone will be more prone to scratching over the Black one.

@Mickyvai

Care to explain why?

@Powrie:

Aluminum can be anodized to very light colors including silver, and even white by using dyes, or bare metal color without dyes. I did rather believe the specs from the makers of the phone more than a Tech Republic article.

I will only be buying the screen protectors for the front and back, i wont be putting this iphone into any case + ill be getting it insured also.

What are the best screen protectors for the back and front that doesn't ruin looking at the beautiful Retina display?

Just read this interesting article by John Brownlee on the "Cult Of Mac" website explaining why he thinks that, contrary to earlier (more fragile?) iPhones, that the new iPhone5 has been "redesigned" to resist scratching the screen (utilizing Gorilla Glass 2), and prevent damage from dropping, making the iPhone 5 "the first iPhone that even the clumsiest individual can carry around in his pocket as Steve Jobs intended:au natural".

Read the article here:
Why Apple is killing off the bumper and Why You Won't Need A Case For Your iPhone 5

New iPhone 5 owners: After reading the article, whats your assessment?
Will you be purchasing or foregoing a case and/or screen protector for your new iPhone 5. Though I recently ordered an inexpensive temp. $6 case and screen film, I'm having second thoughts about needing them now. Interested to hear other people's thoughts on utilizing a case and/or screen protector with iPhone 5.

i agree 100% with this article and the design of the iphone 5. i will be getting the white and it will be the first iphone i've owned where i will not put a case on it.

Drop Test

Wait for the undoubtedly dozens of YouTube "drop test" video's to surface in the coming days. You then be able to make a much better assessment on whether or not you need a case.

FYI...I'm almost 100% certain that almost all these videos will show that the iPhone 5 will need a case to survive a decent level drop.

That is one of those apps who simulate a broken screen.

1-The phone is not visible on its entirety when the hammer goes down because the person wants to hide the fact that he is pressing some button to trigger the app.

2-the phone doesn't move when the hammer hits it. It should be supposed to move, shouldn't it?

3-the cracking doesn't extend over the screen

Thought it was quite evident...

And how about these ones the screens are turned off:

Gorilla glass is not unbreakable and as Corning data specifies, GG 2.0 has the same strength as the original, only difference it's 20% thinner.

So? No one says gorilla glass is unbreakable, only that the video you previously linked was a fake. ;-)

Btw, gorilla is advertised as scratch-proof, not as an unbreakable glass

Wasn't the 4/4S scratch proof too? I definitely have some scratches on mine.

I really hope my Moto RAZR will be scratch-proof (it has Gorilla glass) because I decided to use it without screen protector ;-)

I agree with this article 100%

I hate cases, especially for the iphone. This phone is the best looking phone on the market with great craftsmanship and high quality materials. I hate when friends of mine by the iphone and then stick it in some ridiculous indestructible, but enormous ugly case that double the size of the phone and covers up everything but the front glass. It totally defeats the purpose of buying some a great looking phone. Get the damn Apple Care Plus, forget the case and enjoy your iPhone in its birthday suit, o'natural. Unless you work in construction or on the water where your phone is at much higher than normal risk on a regular basis, then maybe you get one of those indestructible or water proof cases.

I didn't use a case on my iPhone 4, the phone still looks great but the camera on the back is all scratched up (I can't even use it). I'll pay a case fore the 5 just to protect the camera lens

New sapphire crystal on iPhone5 will make it on non-issue;)

This case keeps that slim sleek profile of the iPhone 5, has that matte texture feel so it won't be slippery and it's only $3!!!

Protects it enough for me to feel safe lugging around my iPhone 5.

I am all for no case but looking at this case on eBay looks like it's barely there which is a good thing, it's flush with the device and doesn't stick out in any way.

I am personally getting a case so I won't have any scratches and to protect the camera lens.

Plus I believe that it sticks out a little on the front so that if it fell face first or front corner, it would hit the case and not the glass since the glass IS NOT flush with the band like the website says.

So all in all this case is a winner for a lot of people
