There is no reason not to be careful because you don't want to buy a new one.

I agree 100%. But not letting your friends "touch or handle" your phone goes a bit beyond being careful. Yes, I try to avoid dropping my phone like the plague. Every time I get in and out of my car I check my lap and pockets to make sure it won't fall out. I don't leave it sitting on a table when I walk away to throw out some trash. I try to be diligent with it, but at the end of the day, it's just a phone and if my friend needed to make a phone call, I wouldn't think twice; if a friend wanted to try out JawBreaker or Auroa Feint, I wouldn't think twice.

No one is saying you shouldn't be careful. Certainly not me. But there's no reason to be extremist. That's my point.

your ridiculous AFPoster

Abercrombie and Fitch Poster? is that what that stands for...wow. I think this thread is you being a Poser, haha. i think you know who this is.

it might have cost Apple $1 dollar, but it cost me 300+ SO I'm gonna make sure its nice and protected.

so let them fix their mistake, it may be more profitable for them to choose the plastic, however that doesn't mean you have to pay extra $$ for protecting it(case), let them replace it.
i have a 3 year old Nokia and there are no plastic cracks or breaks anywhere on the phone. I guess Nokia knows how a product will see wear and tear over the time of its life, and what materials to choose :)

Most of 3G users are reporting on macrumors that they see cracks on the back. Think about it, this phone is brand new, if they see it cracking in the first 2-3 weeks of usage (thats the time frame where most of us try not to scratch it or drop it) can you imagine what will it look like after 6 months?

That is such an amateur mistake in my opinion.

I don't think I'd go as far as to say MOST. It's the whole theory of "people only post bad stuff" on forums. Mines great. I don't think it'd be any more likely to crack than any other phone that is plastic. INCLUDING any blackberry. If it does, just like any other plastic phone, it's not covered in warranty and is out of pocket. I've had that happen with less expensive ones before and it sucks. The fact that this one is considerably more expensive scares some people.

EDIT: Poll on users with Cracked iPhones https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/538092/

It's a phone and I bought a warranty. Couldn't care less.

Warranty is not insurance. Warranty only covers software and hardware defects. You'd have a tough time convincing Apple that it was a defect that the back was made out of plastic so it broke when you dropped it.

its usually in my pocket - its naked about half the time, the only other things allowed in the iphone pocket are its headphones. my keys and whatever else go in the other pocket.

and im careful of where i put it at night - it only goes on my desk on my macbook's microfiber cloth. i put it on the macbook's cloth because its much bigger than the iphone's.

Same here to both, though I wouldn't characterize either as "extreme measures". I was brought up to take good care of my things, and like to keep them as nice as possible. Everything I own at some point will be on ebay or Craigslist when something different comes along, so that's another reason to keep things as new looking as possible.
