So, do you buy a new machine every year, or what? Can you buy me one? ;)

Pretty much. My wife and I have been in college/grad school since late '96 so we get the student discounts (though that just ended in May with her finishing her masters). They used Macs exclusively in her Masters program so she always used a laptop and I always use a desktop. Plus we have both worked full time while going to school. I usually sell my machines about a year after getting them and upgrade. Macs hold their value pretty well so after a year you can still get a good amount out of them and only spend about 25% of the cost of a new machine + what you make selling them. I'm a little bit obsessed with keeping my machine pretty current. Though I have had my 1GHz 17" iMac for almost 1 1/2 years......waiting for the G5 iMac.

Apple II (first machine I programmed on, in secondary school).
Mac Plus (first Mac I used, in college. Oh, the floppy shuffle!)
Mac LC (first Mac I owned!!)
Performa 6300 (with TV tuner & remote control)
PowerMac G3 (Beige)
PowerMac G3 B&W (At the time, the closest I ever was to 'top of the range')
iMac 17" (Fave machine of them all, apart from the "first")

Next..

PowerMac G5 2x2? (Fingers crossed)

My Apple history...

I had an Apple ][ + back in the early 80's (I really wish I'd held onto that machine...it would be really cool to have it now). But, with the emergence of the cheap and (for the time) powerful IBM PC, I bought a 4.77 MHz PC (with a *hard disk*...what a luxury!) in 1984, and owned exclusively PC's from then until recently. When OS X was introduced, I'd been using various flavours of Linux and FreeBSD on my PCs, which re-ignited my interest in Apple computers.

I bought a 15" 667MHz TiBook a couple of years ago now, and have been completely converted. I don't think I'll ever buy another PC. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the G5 PowerBook, which will be my next computer.

Interesting thread.

Cheers

I migrated to Apple after my Amiga 500 died. (RIP)

I've used a bunch of Apple IIe machines in my early school days. I still remember the big floppy disks and "beep...rata-tat-tat-tat" when you turned the IIe on. I've also used a bunch of old Macs that I don't remember too well. They might have been early Performas or LC models.

As far as personal Macs...

My family's first computer was a Performa 6300CD. That thing had a whopping 100MHz PPC and about 1GB of HD space. It's amazing how a family of four could store all of their files & programs on a single gig of space and still have room to spare.

My sister got an original Bondi iMac several years later when she went off to college. I remember how powerful it seemed compared to the Performa. :D

The family computer later got upgraded to a blue & white 300MHz G3 tower. I inherited the Performa with that upgrade.

Fast forward to 2000. I upgraded to a Summer 2000 Ruby 400MHz G3 iMac, which I'm still using right now. This little champ keeps on chugging 24/7 without skipping a beat.

My sister recently upgraded her Bondi iMac to a 1GHz G4 FP iMac.

And most recently, the BW G3 tower was replaced with a 1.25GHz G4 Superdrive eMac. Nice machine for the price.

I'm glad to be part of a Mac only family! :D

hmmmm....

interesting. i've thought about this before, but never put it in order. let's see:

  • Mac Classic - didn't really own it, but i used to play w/ it in Macy's every time i went to the mall. this is where i first b/c a Mac fan
  • Macintosh LC - half the graphic design class wanted to get the markers out for our first project, the other half couldn't stay out of the computer lab. guess which half i was in?
  • Powermac 8100/66 - upgrades to the graphic's computer lab
  • Powermac 7100/80 AV - first Mac of my very own (begging & pleading w/ the parents for this. their investment paid off)
  • Powermac 8500 - work computer @ CNN.com (actually went through a few computers there. don't remember them all)
  • changed jobs - went to PC for a little while
  • Powermac G3/300 - talked an all PC dept in my NEW job to pony up for this. it was pretty sweet: floppy, CD AND Zip!
  • bought a Gateway for myself. what was i thinking? oh, right, "free" software from work.
  • Powermac G3 B&W/400 - went to work for Apple!
  • Powermac G4/450 - one of the first groups w/in Apple (that i knew of) to get the G4. ye-ah.
  • Powermac G4/400 GE - bought this & a Cinema Display w/ my employee discount on my way out the door to a dot.com
  • Powerbook G4/400 - dot.com bought this for me. still with me (consolation prize along w/ the Cinema) ;)
  • Powermac G4/dual 1.25 (MDD) - bought this for myself. it was time for an upgrade
  • Powermac G5/1.6 - talked current job into upgrading from painfully slow G4/400 a couple months ago

i'm sure there are a couple work computers i missed, but i think i've provided a pretty good revenue stream for Apple over the past 8-10 years.

now i just need to upgrade my iPod...

As per my signature.

The Performa 580 now keeps dairy cow records at the family farm.
I use the iMac with Panther at work, and the eMac at home.
The first two computers had about 5-6 years use before moving on. I expect the eMac to give the same.

My families first mac was a PowerMac 6500/225.

We then got a FW800 single 1Ghz and I got the 6500 to myself.

For playing around with I got another 6500/275 and my mom brought home an old Powermac 6100 from her work that they were getting rid of. Didn't use either much or keep them for very long.

Now I have my own 1.5Ghz 15" PowerBook. Best computer I have ever used. :D

Been a Mac user since 12/27/94! Yes, I remember the date :D. Here are my Macs, with specs (amazing how far we've come):

• Performa 630CD - 33MHz 68LC040 (no FPU  ), 8MB RAM, 250MB HD, 1MB VRAM

• PowerMac 7100 - 66MHz PPC601, 16MB RAM, 500MB HD (SCSI!), 2MB VRAM

• iMac DV SE - 400MHz G3, 768MB RAM, 80GB HD, 8MB VRAM

• PowerMac MDD - dual 1.25GHz G4, 768MB RAM, 160GB HD, 64MB VRAM

• PowerBook 12" - 1GHz G4, 768MB RAM, 80GB HD, 32MB VRAM

I've been very happy with all my Macs. None have given me significant problems. The 7100 has a dead hard drive, but that's understandable, and the combo drive in my MDD died the first week, but Apple took care of that. I'd love to add a IIfx to my stable, and perhaps an SE/30. Maybe one day when I have more room...

(1) Macintosh Plus /w 4MB RAM & 20MB external HD
Borrowed it for a while in early 90's, went back to Windows 3.1 when I had to return it.

(2) Macintosh Performa 460 /w 8MB RAM & 160MB HD
My first own Mac. Saved all my money for a year to get it. Finally bought one in 1994.

(3) PowerMac G4 400MHz (Gigabit Ethernet) /w 640MB RAM & 2x80GB HD
True beast at the time I bought it (in July 2000). Lasted until last Christmas, when was replaced by G5.

(4) PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz /w 2.5GB RAM, 2x250GB HD & 20" Cinema Display
Bought it to get a true Audio workstation (in December 2003), as G4 started to show its age.

These have been the only Macs among my family members or friends. All the others are on the dark side. :(
