Really.. it is quicker for you to shutdown your Mac than it is to put it to sleep?

Thats right, as explained above it can be safer to shutdown and there is no waiting around for the hard disk to spin down (although some people may not wait for that).

However..having said that, I will wait for it to sleep 9 times of out 10 as I like everything to be as I left it, and its quicker to wake from sleep than to start it up. I would use shutdown when Im packing it up for long journey if Im afk for a while.

actually, boot time is not really an issue (faster or not) because it's like we are turning on and off the mac all the time

i'm pretty sure that most users put their mac on sleep, especially desktop mac or even laptop mac (at home)

this will concern only mobile usage

but even a slight improvement is appreciated

We´ve allready been through this: that doesn´t mean it´s not an interestng way of measuring the performance of Snow Leopard. Besides, lot´s of people still chose to turn off their computers every day

You reboot often..?

One of the amazing things about a Mac is its ability to wake from sleep almost instantly and be fresh to use. I rarely restart - only when I need to boot into Boot Camp or an update requires it.

I don't understand people who shut their Macs down every time they've finished using it.

Does Turning off your computer slow down your computer, because I shut down my computer everyday

13" MBP w/SSD
boot is a couple of seconds slower, now about 20 sec. no biggie.
shut down is definitely quicker, it completely shuts down in about 3-4 sec.

Are all these times with the default settings of SL with the 32 bit kernel? Maybe I am wrong but I thought 64 bit took longer.

Mine is booting in about 30 seconds with the 64 bit kernel enabled.

Doen't putting it to sleep and packing it up and going off increases your chance of the mac being spolit. I have heard some people telling me that when you put you mac to sleep, try not to move it around as the harddisc is still in motion. So you might crash the machine. And most of them told me to shut down instead. That is what I have been doing, shutting down.

i believe that when a mac is in sleep mode, only the RAM is being powered so that the memory won't be lost and remember what you were on last, the HDD should be stopped completely until you wake it up again?

Call me old school but I just think that any electronic device in the "off" position just lasts longer than one where electrical current is constantly applied (No matter how miniscule).

Ok - you're old school. ;)

There's another school of thought - thermal changes are the biggest thing that can age a lot of silicon and solder - going up and down in temperature can wreak havoc. Of course, things are pretty cool when in sleep mode...

boot time / shutdown time

Snow Leopard Boot and Shutdown

Shutdown is an amazing 1 second. I cant believe it! I had a dell before this running windows vista ultimate and shutdown was over 3 minutes.

But more impressive: I timed from complete shutdown til being able to load my safari homepage: UNDER 30 SECONDS.

That is just effin incredible.

Macbook Pro 13" / 2.53Ghz / 4GB RAM / 250GB HD

Boot-up time, which is from button press to full glory of regular desktop clutter (with automatic login enabled):
for Leopard; about 45 seconds
for Snow Leopard; about 41 seconds

Shutdown time, which is from button press to black screen:
for Leopard; about 6 seconds
for Snow Leopard; about 4 seconds

from a post i blogged here, which is about above times as well as comprehensive disk space comparison before and after installation of Snow Leopard.

I know I'm anal, but I've not really timed my reboots and so I cannot say if SL is slower or faster. It seems slower but I've not done any scientific measurements mostly because I hardly reboot. After all this isn't windows, the only time I reboot is to go into bootcamp, running ubuntu natively, or I'm installing a patch from apple that requires a reboot.

There's a school of thought that shutting electronics on and off is worse, because the parts expand and shrink because of heat.

Doesn't apply to the sleep/shutdown debate as both the hottest components shut off.

From pressing the power button to Desktop being fully loaded is 36 seconds in both 32bit and 64bit under Snowy.

Shuts down in 4 - 6 seconds depending on what I have had running.

Oh right yeah, amazing just like Windows and Linux! lol

Yeah I always sleep my MBP, but have to restart now and again once the gremlins start appearing.

Apple, crash different! ;)
