My concern with the "only $2 per year" is that fiscal responsibility knows no bounds (which is the failing grace of so many pork projects on both sides of the aisle). Half a billion is half a billion....

And merchants aren't going to round 2.16 down to 2.15. If I was a merchant, it would be 2.20. Even not having the half-penny causes people to lose money on a daily basis. Those that pay you (banks with interest) round down, those that charge you round up. That is never going to change. If you are willing to absorb up to 4 cents per transaction...let it all add up....
 
If cost were the sole reason to get rid of the penny, the nickle would also have to be killed.

Cost 1.23 cents to make a penny and 5.73 cents to make a nickle, but the mint will still make around a $700 million profit.
