I'd think they would've made it like the iPhone where there's extra space on the screen exclusively for the home bar.

There isn't. I've encountered numerous apps that have overlapping elements with home bar, just like this youtube.

I still think the home bar needs to disappear in all apps (including apples own) just a waste of space and serves really no purpose. For people who don’t know what to do, they will learn to swipe up from the bottom pretty quick. There are a couple apps that don’t have the bar and it just looks better that way

Yes it’s screwed up again. Unbelievable. Hope it gets fixed soon. Lazy lazy lazy when stuff like this happens.
