Thing is, the PS4 had far superior apps on day one, and they're updated regularly. I know the difference between a thriving, supported platform and one which languishes unloved.

If you have an explanation for the big YouTube update skipping the ATV, please do share. Something's fishy.
From what I can tell, Youtube "apps" on other platforms are simply wrappers around the website, not true native apps. Apple removed support for webviews from tvOS (here's a good explanation: https://medium.com/bpxl-craft/apple-tv-a-world-without-webkit-5c428a64a6dd). Apple TV Youtube app is developed separately and hasn't been updated for this reason. Youtube probably doesn't (yet) see a reason to devote a lot of resources toward developing a full-featured app for it.
On the bright side, this looks promising: http://www.kendallinnovations.co.uk/#!tv-tube/s6294

YouTube is a wrapper on the likes of the PS4? It's done well if that's the case, as it's pretty snappy.

In the case of YouTube, I wonder if Google's total disinterest is deliberate, and a simple case of Google not wanting to do anything above the barest minimum to help Apple. They don't have much choice on iOS due to market share, but on TVOS, well things are rather different.

Then again there are plenty of other abandonware Apple TV apps out there. Crunchyroll is another terrible one, but the real standout, the worst app on the platform by far, is Now TV. It's essentially HBO NOW for the UK market, but the app is truly eye opening. It's terrible in ways you cannot imagine. Truly the laziest, ugliest, least loved app on the Apple TV.

I'm glad I also have a PS4, as it has the apps I need, and they're great versions of those apps. I just wish the PS4's fans weren't so loud.

As an aside, what's the deal with Siri? In the UK, and in any country not called USA, it can only search Netflix and iTunes. "Universal" search it certainly isn't.
