The YouTube app for iOS was today given a small but significant update, adding support for the iPad Pro to improve video quality on Apple's newest tablet. Since the iPad Pro was released in November, people have complained about the poor video quality of YouTube videos within the app as the content was scaled up to match the iPad Pro's resolution.

Three months later, the app is finally getting the update it needs to make watching videos via the YouTube app an enjoyable experience on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Today's update also includes a fix for a bug that could cause the keyboard to freeze when commenting and a fix for an issue that caused the app to crash after adding an account on iOS 7.

YouTube can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Why no PIP YouTube? WHY?!??!!!

It probably has something to do with ads?

What I have to do now is really lame. When the video is playing small in landscape, I'll use slideover to use other apps as it perfectly fits next to the video. It dims the video a little bit, and sometimes the slideover window accidentally closes since it isn't snapped. Having the video be large and dim and my app (usually Safari) be so narrow isn't ideal, but it's better than nothing. I'm so glad that Google is promoting sub-par experiences with hacky work-arounds for one of their best services on the mobile platform that makes them the most money. It's too bad iOS doesn't automatically add PIP controls to any playing video like they do in Safari.

...and makes their dumb tab bar look even more ridiculously ugly than it did on smaller screens.

That giant red bar with tiny icons at the top is a ridiculous use of space. That underscores for me the fundamental problem with tablets, there is so little real thought put into the form factor. Just scale stuff up and spread it out.

I don't think the problem is tablets, I think the problem is incompetent designers who don't know how to take advantage of more space when they're given it.

That's not because of tablets, it's because Google wants to use the app to push material design from Android but MD is ugly and wastes space.

Bingo. They're so proud of actually having a design direction now they're foisting it on every platform they get their hands on, and wow does it look ugly next to native iOS design. Not a flattering contrast.

Even funnier when you see the hypocrisy from Android users who complained about Apple Music not following material design even though Apple actually did, there are very few elements borrowed from the iOS app such as the pink genre bubbles.

Meanwhile look at what we have to put up with from Google! The Google Maps app is probably the worst followed by Youtube imo.

Taste aside, the issue of phone layouts just getting stretched out with empty space isn't just a google app issue. Look at the home screen on the iPad pro.

I'm not saying I know what the exact solution should be, but the problem is that iPads all too frequently take the information density of a phone screen and just add empty space rather than design a better interface for the form factor.

That's because your watching videos in HD for like 5 hours...

Its going to eat up battery. Isn't that the whole point of the battery? To be used?

People that want like 10% battery consumption after using a device for many hours is funny.
