Trying out four solutions for Youtube playback on Tiger with my Powerbook, gauging efficiency with the Activity Monitor.

In order:
IceWeaselPPC utilising Greasemonkey/Viewtube/MPlayer
TFFTube - a FoxBox streaming the 3gp video through RealPlayer SP
TonVid - FoxBox using youtube-dl/MPlayer
AquaVid - FoxBox from @z970mp

Final sequence is the IceWeaselPPC combo successfully streaming 720P Youtube - details of which can be found here:

Did you try IceWeaselPPC on a G3 using Quicktime player? If that works, that's the closest ever to getting desktop YouTube on a G3 and would be the best option over 180p/144p mono audio 3gp streaming.

Haven't tried it yet - the only problem is video lower than 360P can't be accessed and QuickTime is likely only able to play 360P h264 on the fastest G3s.
At least the 600mhz+ could possibly handle it. Meaning I could get "high res" streaming on my snow G3

Gotcha! I haven't encountered that with mine and hopefully it will remain that way. :)

I've got one that's absolutely brutal (800mhz 12" G3). I keep dryer sheets under the keyboard and replace them every few days, or, if it sits, when I decide to use it again. It'll make your eyes water otherwise. I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet but I don't know if I want to take the chance on getting another stinky one...

Have you tried deodorant?

They're still 800/900mhz PowerPC G3s.

If they're so bad, can't anyone just transplant the logic board into an older case?

Better yet, take out the logic board, plant it into a case (SBC style), and run it off of there w/ a keyboard, mouse, and external display. Boom, Mac mini G3. :D
