Just need to be able to have the mobile browser version open automatically like the native app does now.

ie. MIME type action.

So is there a way to trick the iPhone to redirect to this site instead of the stock app? I find that most my YouTube viewing is clicking on embedded videos on blogs or facebook and not through browsing the site.

Also, there still is no search options like searching by most recent on the stock app or the revamped mobile site.

Because YouTube didn't write the App, Apple did?

arn

I don't see a way in any of them still to go to YouTube CHANNELS! :(

about time google, now apple needs to allow us to delete the app

Yeah I never use the app, I just go on the mobile site. I love the iPad mobile site, and this new iPhone one looks great too!

Why all the hate? It may sound dumb, but the app still has a much better UI which I enjoy! Especially the iPad app for YouTube! Beautiful!

Yes! Now you also get a better icon too, like I had on my jailbroke 3GS! :D

I think the current icon is nice, but I did always wonder why they didn't just use the YouTube logo like that. Probably didn't want some other brand displayed on their phone.

This is what bugs me... Apple redid the microphone in the voice memos app, less harsh shadows and looks MUCH better, more realistic, BUT they didn't use that newer design on the icon of the app, so the icon still has those two harsh vertical shadows! I know, little little thing, but I notice these things, and I thought Steve did too! Well they missed that one!

Needs to show more recent videos added by subscriptions on the home page! Right now, it only shows the most recent 15, with no option to load more than that. I like the way Apple's YouTube app sorts Subscriptions, but I suppose I'll have to compromise in order to take advantage of the higher quality over the 3G network.

EDIT: Also, videos don't play in 720p when on Wi-Fi, but they do on the native app.

Don't change language to "English: UK" either or it reverts to old site. Anyone know if there's a way to watch 720p? That's something I actually liked about the native app...

Click the "HQ'" button on the YouTube player! I don't know if it's 720p though but it is High Quality.

Very nice for the iPhone. I do prefer the layout of the iPad native app though. Would be nice to bring over that interface.

Yeah, HQ has to be red and the quality is nice but don't think it's 720p - I checked out Toy Story HD on native last night to show friends the picture quality and it was perfect, with YouTube app it's a noisier picture though still decent...

using the new web interface there is the option for HD on my iphone, but with the iPad there is still no option! ridiculous! :(

Every update we've had on the iPhone, I've hoped for a refurbished youtube app, but it's never happened. All I want is ti be able to shorten youtube video urls within the app so that I can post to any social networking site. What are Apple waiting for?... Surely not iOS5! It's staring to get tiresome now. I'll just use the website until Apple decides to do something...

Nice to see Google delivering on their web app promises. It highlights how some things are better through the browser rather than a native app locked down on the phone. There are a number of other default "apps" on the iPhone that could benefit from sitting on the web.

Looks nice. Google wants the web version to be better than the app because they see a future where apps are obsolete and browsers are the portal to everything - which is the idea they're pushing with their Chrome OS.

I hope it fails, TBH. I don't want to have to pull all my apps and data off of an advertising company every time I want to use my computer.

I'll give it a go but in my experience no web app has ever seemed as polished or fast as a native app (that goes for desktops too) but then I don't use YouTube much anyway...

EDIT: why haven't they added an icon for iPhone? That screenshot looks ugly on my home screen!!!

Go to the YouTube mobile homepage and then add it to home screen. You should get the regular logo.

Same here. This cloud only computing initiative is insane. I much prefer local storage and using local resources (like my powerful MBP with its powerful software, not just my browser with its inherent lag) with real time backup. Dropbox is the ideal solution. I never use Google docs.

Yes, because Apple have no intention of data mining their customers...

deleting apps

to all of you who complain about not being able to delete youtube or stocks I would just like to point out on my palm pixi (kinda like a pre lite I think, still with webOS) has sponsored NFL and Nascar apps that I cannot delete. Which sucks because i'm confined to only 3 pages (i.e. One is a trash)

How could they? I host no data on any of Apple's services, and Google makes 99% of it's massive revenue from targeted advertising, so who's more likely to be interested in my data?

MobileMe is funded by you, not ads, remember.

Am I missing something? Just tried it on my iP4 and it looks no different to the App or the old site.

Still star ratings instead of thumbs up/down, no option for HQ (tried it over wifi)

It looks nothing like the ad.

the mobile version of the site works awesome on my nexus one with android 2.2

Well that's good for you, but many people do use Apple's services. As was reported just a few days ago :

"Apple Inc., with a storehouse of billions of music, movie and software downloads, is studying the buying habits of many of its 150 million iTunes users to show more appealing mobile ads and fuel competition with Google Inc."

"Apple knows what you've downloaded, how much time you spend interacting with applications and knows even what you've downloaded, don't like and deleted,”
.

source Business Week.

Personally, I've no problem with that - nor with Google using customer data for their own targeted ads. Google describe themselves as an advertising company, so nobody should be surprised if they use customer data for their own advertising, and also no reason why Apple shouldn't do exactly the same. They're both chasing the same money, but Google somehow always seem to be seen as the bad guy. They're both as good or as bad as each other :).

Works well for me.

This is the first time I got an app from outside of the App store! I guess it is just a link to the web through the browser but it suggests that YouTube got the go ahead from Apple to allow it. Why then did they just not update the previous app?

Does this mean we will have more and more mobile web sites promp you to create a "bookmark on your home page"?

I couldn't care less if Apple knows what I use the iTunes Store for, but I would care if they made me store all my data and apps on their servers as Google wants users to do.

Think about all the information you have on your hard drive - browsing history (which Google most likely already knows quite a bit about), family photos, videos, films, music, accounts, and calenders, to name a few. If you were using Google's OS, they'd have data on all of those things - they'd know what you spend money on, how much money you have, what your family look like, and where you'll be in the future as well as what Apple can get from iTunes Store habits.

Scared yet? Lots of mobile devices are also location-aware, so they can find out where you live and where you go out - and it's often said you can find out who someone is from that data alone, but add that to all the other information Google will have on you by that point and it's a privacy disaster!

So, I am very opposed to advertising companies storing all my data and software thank you very much.

Once again, for those complaining about not being able to delete the old YouTube icon for the stock YouTube app, you pretty much can just make it disappear.

Go to restrictions in settings and then turn YouTube off. The icon for the app is now gone.
