Is this even working for anybody? I have no app updates available for YouTube, and it still quits out completely when I go to the Home Screen. Even has the audacity to suggest I sign up for Premium to allow the video to keep playing.
Works very well on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Not so well with my iPad Mini 6, no video, but I can hear the audio.

edit: PiP was not enabled by default on the iPad app. It works now.

Finally! Not sure why it took so long. Now, I can enjoy listening to music freely without closing down the app.
Per the MR article, it’s still disabled / doesn’t work for music videos (even in the US) unless you’re a premium subscriber. Haven’t tested it myself.

Meh. Too little too late. Why use their app which can track you and better serve ****** adds, when you can use Safari with an adblocker and the Vinegar plug-in, or others to get Picture in Picture and deny YouTube the private data about your viewing.

Ridiculous that it took this long to let us use a native feature of our device without having to pay them or use a JS Siri Shortcut to bypass their lock.

You want all the content for free, hd, without ads, without your data being used and without subscribing to their premium offering? How on earth do you expect a service like this to keep afloat then?

Sadly, very little content let’s a free user use pip. On basic videos, I keep getting the error “Music content can not be played in PIP”, even on videos with no music. Looks like it’s more of a marketing gimmick to get users to upgrade to remove pesky notices.

Is this something the EU is going to complain about?
Yes 🇪🇺

Yes 🤷‍♂️

I’m not feeling sorry for a multinational whose only goal it is to extract as much data from me as possible. Even if they offer great services Apple can only dream about.

Finally!

Though i went to try it and it doesn't work.

I'm outside the US, but am a premium subscriber.

Every time i try to switch to PiP, i get a "Music content cannot be played in picture-in-picture" error

This is despite the video not being for music

I guess any video that has recognised and flagged music is treater like that? sounds pretty crappy.

so far every video i've tried has had this issue.

I'll cut google the benefit of the doubt and assume it hasn't properly rolled out in Australia yet. I'll check again later in the week.

Lol I tried it with a techmoan video and got a „PiP does not work with music videos“ error.
So I tried it with some cooking channels and I get the same error.

I finally got system based dark mode from YouTube on iOS today as well. I remember this feature being rolled out to a few people three years ago.

Glad to see the feature rolled out to everyone, three years later. Three years. Later.

Unfortunarely, google says this wouldn’t work for music:

Non-Premium Members: In the U.S., everyone using the YouTube app on iPhone and iPad will have access to PiP for non-music content…

Why do they make such a big deal about it? I mean why first in the US and then rest of the world and why such announcements? Why hasn‘t this been rolled out all at once many years ago?

Isn‘t this something very easy to implement?

YouTube (Google) makes it seem as if this is some incredible big feature. Yet iPadOS/MacOS can do this natively since years with YouTube videos and other online videos.

Nice. At least I know it’s not going to be taken away now.
Don’t be too certain of that. It’ll depend on whether management feels that this change ends up helping or hurting their bottom line. Google is known for killing off underperforming features or products, even if users love them.

100%. Every kind of relaxing video with audio you would want to listen to while multitasking says it’s music even when it’s not music. Totally useless. YouTube is a garbage platform.

I just get this on every single video. 😒

And the Learn More link of course mentions absolutely nothing about music content.
