EDIT: Yes, if you got a the newer Alu MB, you would see a far better improvement in playback of graphic intensive tasks. The Intel IGA is far less powerful then the dedicated GPU chip in the newer MBs.

Is the GPU on the aluminum MacBooks a dedicated one? I thought the GPU on the aluminum MacBooks was an integrated one, since it shares the system RAM. What is the correct answer?

I'm not exactly a techie guy, but I *think* it is a dedicated video card, that is integrated on the main board, and uses system RAM, rather than having dedicated RAM

edit: lol, that sounds like integrated, but somehow it is *less* integrated than the intel graphics.

New macbook has DISCRETE GRAPHICS!!! not dedicated...

For those of you who want to know the difference:

- Integrated - Best power saving but weakest kind of GPU - it uses some of your RAM and some of your CPU. were in the old plastic MB's

- Discreet - the best of both worlds. - it uses your RAM, but there's a separate graphics processor on the motherboard. Alum MB's come with these, and recently apple added them to the white MB they have for $999.

- Dedicated - Consumes power, but is VERY fast. Uses its own Processor AND memory (doesnt take from RAM) - MBP's come with these and with a discreet chip for "power save mode".

Just run a little test on the new white MB and i took a screen shot. iStat running in the menu bar.

From all that I read, FF is all but slower on a Mac (renders webpages slower).

Here is the thing about fans. Just because they spin up does not mean your computer is over heating. They work off a step-up type of logic. I.E:

70 degrees or lower = Fan off or minimal speed
71-90 degrees = Fan at 20%
91-109 degrees = Fan at 50%
110 degrees and up = Fan at 100%

Your fan doesn't just kick on when your CPU or motherboard begins to fry.

I really don't understand why people worry when they are watching videos and the fan kicks on. If you don't like the sound, turn up the volume or use headphones.

The people that have said the FLASH is more resource intensive on a Mac are correct. But, it is working as it should. Until the developers tone down the FLASH resource requirements, know that your computer is working as it should.

Also, to those that would say "well it should work this way." Yes, maybe it should in your opinion. I'm just stating that it doesn't work that way now and you need to realize it.

I agree, I can't believe people would use youtube as a deciding factor when buying a Mac.
My fan kicks on, no big deal at all.

...anyway he told me to use firefox instead of using safari so that it wont put as much strain on the CPU as using safari would.

Actually, I think Camino does a better job at handling Flash than Safari or Firefox in most cases (not always).

When I got my first ever Mac in 2006, I was surprised to see that Flash was so resource-hungry on it. I then tried the same Flash video on Windows XP with Internet Explorer and Firefox. Internet Explorer did a far better job.

Uh... no.

Discreet and dedicated GPUs are one and the same.

The 9400M in the new MacBooks is an integrated GPU -- it uses system memory just like the X3100 and GMA950 that proceeded it.

The GMA950 and (IIRC) the X3100 do have fallback CPU rendering paths for some things that aren't supported in hardware. For example: from what I remember from the spec sheet, the GMA950 does T&L in software. Still, both the X3100 and the GMA950 were "separate graphics processors" on the motherboard -- they are contained in individual chips just like the 9400M is.

It's showing 50.0% usage in Safari because it's using 50% of one core.

It's using 25% of your total processing power.

Yes, Flash movies aren't optimized as well as they should be for the Mac. I invested in CoolBook, a $10 application that allowed me to control the freq and voltages of the processor. I have a Penryn 2.4GHz MacBook, and I usually sit around 45c when watching a youtube video. Fans don't rev up at all.

EDIT: Discreet == Dedicated. Stupid people.

And? It's some random article about the 9400M. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are missing something. In the above posts, people were going back and forth about whether the 9400M was a dedicated, intergrated, or a discrete application. This article clearifies the confusion.

make the switch

As a long time PC user/defender, I finally made the switch in Dec and never want to go back. I got the 2.4 macbook and could not ask for more.. except some more USB ports, but that's okay. I bought a Belkin CushTop to keep the warm unibody away from my junk while I watch Hulu.. but that was something I had already. And my PC was WAY hotter anyways.
