It still amazes me how Google dedicates so much time to restricting how we use our own devices
Of course, if your iPhone was Jailbroken, you could just modify Youtube’s code to re-enable PiP and Google wouldn’t be able to do anything...

On ios, for the youtube app? No.
Only when you access it through your browser:
I use the free version of AdBlock Pro. It's available for macOS and iOS/macOS and works great.
But keep in mind that you have to use Safari (or probably any other browser) to watch YouTube videos on iOS, it won't work if you use the YouTube app.
Haven't watched an ad in ages on my iPhone.

Good. I don‘t watch YouTube often but this feature made it bearable as it allowed me to watch or listen to a video on the side as I did some work.

Hopefully 14.5 fixes Siri’s ability to change its volume. Stopped working in 14.4.

If Apple is actively changing the feature to make it harder for Google to block it, GOOD! Ever since the feature came out, I have been using YouTube in Safari with the Siri shortcut for PiP. It's been working great so far, and I get the added bonus of being able to skip every single ad, even the "unskippable" ones by fast forwarding through them (they don't disable the scrubber on the iPhone player). I wish my iPad did that too, but it's a different player in the iPad's Safari.

YouTube will never get any money from me as long as their only option is that expensive Premium. They will need to come out with a $2-5 a month basic plan that gives you background play and no-ads. You give us that. I would likely jump on that.

also is an entire guess when Google is gonna update their apps for ios (2 months already)....sigh

Since it was mentioned in the story, I'll remind everyone that YouTube's app is a workaround for browser ad blocking plugins.

Meh, they’re probably going to remove it again anyway so who cares.

It’s funny that you can currently see the pip window for like half a second then it disappears.

It is tiring.

but, that business model of making things frustrating and offering a magical payment to just make it all go away is a legitimate one.

easy out:
1. YouTube app that you can't install ad blocker on and they get to track you. They get paid
2. YT premium for monthly fee. They get paid.
3. AdBlocker but you're stuck at 720p max, and it glitches out a lot.

the YouTube is gonna getchu. YouTube is gonna getchu, the YouTube is gonna get youuuu.... tonight. (Some song from the 80's)
I’d rather watch 720 with no ads than watch anything higher with multiple ads.

I see enough ads daily as it is & would never pay for yt.

Working for me on iOS 14.1.

They should be able to develop PiP so that restricting its use isn’t possible.

Youtube should rather work on improving the app experience, instead of breaking built in iOS features. I hate the app UI.

The ad blockers work for me on macOS, but I have ad blockers on my iPhone and iPad and those don’t block ads on the YouTube app.

Are there any iOS ad blockers that will stop ads on the YouTube app?
Nah, you have to use your browser for them to work.
