Streaming: Sorry, we're throttling the network.
Torrent: efficient.

The only problem is the studios don't sell torrent seeds. In a competitive world, a worldwide throttling tends to subsidize ineffiecient networks. But I suppose getting you all signed up for a better network would expose installers.

The reduced bandwidth must have had an immediate effect.

I just did an lte Speedtest on my iphone and got 218/51.9.

Unfortunately my home internet was halved from 300/40 to 150/20.

Maybe youtube could reduce bandwidth a bit more?

57 Mb/s and nothing on.

Yeah, the studios don't have the balls to distribute encrypted copies on P2P while selling the decryption keys to interested users.
But if they did, would it have any advantages over the present system of streaming video, from a congestion point of view?

This is literally just an excuse to drop their bandwidth costs. The internet is holding up fine but all these companies are suddenly paying a lot more due to the massive increase in volume. They already operate on tight margins so this is eating into their profits.

There is ZERO reason for them to drop resolutions down beyond trying to save themselves from a much larger then normal backhaul bill.

When is this going to stop? It’s fine on my Mac but on my iPad I have to manually change it every time which is quite annoying. Surely not everyone is stuck in anymore?

I get HD, 4k, and 8k options for me. So no problem here either.
