Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they made a Mac Mini (or Mac Micro as it may be) by putting and M1 inside an aluminum version of the AppleTV enclosure. Hell, they could double or triple it's current height and it'd still be an impressive little piece of kit.

It is smaller because he took the power supply out.. wow amazing . Now you just have an external power supply which is still large and taking up space...
It's no different than a MacBook Air logic board with an external power supply.

I'd rather have a same footprint mac mini, with more ports and for the smaller option I wish Apple would make M1 Apple TV.
Also magsafe on a computer without a battery is a bad idea
Nailed it. Particularly the MagSafe thing.

That does make me think it would be cool to do a small battery in the Mac mini as a UPS, particularly in developing countries where consistent power delivery is a greater concern.

Ever since they introduced the Mac mini I have been waiting for the Mac nano. Apple hasn't ever used nano again since the iPod nano. Awesome project!

A desktop with external power supply who would have thought...... oh wait, even Apple did that, and people thought it was AMAZING on their iMac.

I still think it's remarkable what this guy did, no rocket science but still.

Exactly. I'd also bet that, if Apple were to do something similar, they'd use the same power supplies that the iMac uses, meaning the ethernet port would also likely be removed from the Mini itself. It makes sense from a financial/production standpoint to use what you've already got.

What about the heat dissipation in a smaller model?
That was my biggest thought. Has he run it under full load in the average congested house and measured temperature of all the components for hours on end? Because those are serious issues.

Apple were asked to keep it the same size so it would fit in the same server racks.

Yep Apple have repeated this in the past. They sell a fair bit to colo rack sites so keeping the same external shell shape allows easy switching.

Also many people such as sonnet and netstor have solutions that can mount mini inside that would also require reworking if change the mini shape.

Don’t see the need to change the shape really.

This is actually better. Aside from a smaller design, if an electrical failure happens in the power supply, it is easily replaced for presumably under $100. Even instantly swapped out. The alternative, with a built-in power supply, is that your computer needs to be repaired and is unavailable in the meantime, and may cost more because of labour.

tl;dr External power supplies are better.
This is true but the mini actually has an enclosed power supply inside the case so easy to replace as it is. Sure not as convenient as just plugging in a new one but not a huge deal. Also have never heard of someone needing to replace a Mac mini power supply.

It's an interesting idea, but I do think the next Mac mini will of course be larger than this experimental design due to better cooling margins for the SoC. Especially with the M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC's.
