There's no way to build an iPhone-level camera with multiple lenses into a Macbook lid. This is for people who rely on videoconferencing/remote work and streamers/vloggers. If you just pop on a FaceTime call once in a while, the built in camera is fine. This mount takes your video quality and features to another level.
True. They could have fit one in the Studio Display though, instead of the pos it shipped with...

You know that you can charge the Pencil regularly with the included cable and adapter right? The iPad charging was a nice extra incase you didn't bring your cable.

But since you think that was dumb, what's your proposed solution for charging the pencil if you forgot your cable?
Slap it on the side and charge wirelessly??
That would make the Apple Pencil a $999 accessory knowing apple, but at least it wouldn’t be plain ridiculous.

And shortly after iJustine posted a review of an even better camera option - and surprisingly she even said it blew Apple’s out of the water.

First line in the description-

"Thanks to Insta360 for sponsoring this video! Purchase your Insta360 Link here"

But if people want to buy a $300 webcam, go ahead. I'll just use the one I already have with me.

I know what you mean because why not just use your iPhone by itself rather than go through the process of doing it through your MacBook

Unless you want to enjoy bigger screen calls through your Mac or are actively using your Mac for tasks while a call comes in or you want to make a call without breaking stride
You ask a question and then answer it immediately after.

I would rather have Apple focus on fixing the original problem and not have to focus on gimmicks.
The very limited thinness of the MacBook lid restricts apple from improving that camera module. It's not like something else is stopping apple from putting an older iPhone's 12MP shooter in there.

This is a feature for a very limited audience. But I like that Apple focused on developing such an out of box solution.
They focus on this super niche feature, as opposed to updating their iTunes for Windows which millions of their paying Apple Music customers use.

The program doesnt even support hardware acceleration or font smoothing let alone Apples newest, most touted Apple Music feature - Lossless.

Glad all 8 youtube creators that dont for some reason already have a studio webcam can now use their iPhone for it :D

Desk View is nothing but a simple tech demo. Can't believe Apple is now so desperate to ship that as a feature. Sorry to be that guy, but this is the kind of unpolished thing Steve J would have never launched.

To use deskview you have to use the not very good ultra wide camera (small sensor) and lens (high distortion). They then crop a tiny tiny portion at the edge of the frame (where distortion is worst) and scale that up to fill the screen. -> extremely noisy low res image you can barely use.

Just watch the videos. You couldn't even make one detail out in the iphone shots shown.

I don't need to mount it to my MBP, I need to mount it to my external display!
Came in to say exactly this. The camera on my MBP is good enough when I need to use it by itself, but I usually run a setup with two monitors and the MBP to the side, which makes me look quite strange in calls. If I can set up my iPhone somewhere in the middle in that setup, I'd be set. Then again, I'm sure some fancy Belkin stand for such a thing will cost more than a decent webcam.

Suggestion: Integrate a fold-out MagSafe puck into the lid of the notebook so the phone can look like it belongs there, allowing it to rotate from landscape to portrait. Use the front-facing camera and then the phone can be used as a secondary display.

That would be a horrible solution. Besides being ugly, the space it would require would either result in a bump or thicker lid. As for a secondary display, an iPhone would be a poor choice given the size and viewing distance when mounted on a Mac.

Yeah, I’ve been using camo to do exactly this for the past year. I use an old phone so I don’t have to keep mounting/unmounting. wish I had a decent mount (I use a gooseneck gripper) but am too lazy to design+print one. I have the LG ultra fine apple used to sell on their web site.

I use a Joby pro mount and tripod. Not cheap but it’s well made and allows portrait or landscape. Coupled with EpocCam it is a very useful solution if you need a separate webcam or higher resolution.

I also added an LED light source, that attaches to the top of the mount on a hot shoe, to better illuminate my face during web calls.

I’ve been using Continuity Camera with Skype and Zoom as part of the developer beta and found it to work flawlessly. Particularly humorous was the YouTube reviewer who tested the feature with a few yards of “3D molded duct tape” as a quick fix in lieu of a manufactured solution. While no doubt the Belkin mount will retail at some ridiculous price point approaching $40, I purchased a generic floor-mounted stand with included LED that only set me back half that. My iPhone doesn’t need to be so precariously mounted to the top of my laptop display, and there’s no way it’s the preferred option for either M1 Max or midnight M2 Air. This third-party standalone option also offers much greater flexibility for lighting and camera angles while retaining all the advantages and features of the inbuilt software functionality.

She's doing something right and getting paid... can you say the same?

I can, can’t you? I bet most adults get paid for doing something “right”. Does one have to be a YouTube influencer to make it to the group of the untouchables in your opinion, just because there’s folks following what you’re doing?

Every iPad at the time had curved sides so it would not stay in place. So what's your solution for charging the pencil if you forgot your cable?

You don't have to charge it that way, just use the included cable. Seems weird to just not use your pencil until you get home if you forgot your cable or aren't around an outlet because you don't like the way the convenient secondary charging method looks.

A notebook with the “Pro” moniker should have more features, even if it results in a thicker chassis. Apple has agreed with this approach in the latest MacBook Pro, adding ports and increasing thickness.

A fold-out MagSafe phone puck would help integrate products; an iPhone Pro SHOULD attach seamlessly to a MacBook Pro. In fact, a fold-out MagSafe puck to charge an Apple Watch could also be added to the lid or base, as well as a charging surface next to the trackpad for an AirPods case.

Mounting an iPhone with the screen facing the user not only adds a display VASTLY larger and more useful than the ditched TouchBar, it also could serve as a camera light and a million other creative uses.

Useful additions, not kludgy bags on the side.

Right. Adding a wart that adds no functionality and a spot on the surface that adds heat and will get in the way if you try to charge a device would simply add weight, power demands and heat for no added value. You can already easily charge device from USB-C, with a lot less hassle than sticking stuff on your Mac.

All of which is easily, and better, done with a tripod; and I doubt the iPhone screen would be any more useful in practical terms than the Touch Bar.

If they start making laptops without notches or front facing cameras, that would make this option great.
