If Apple put decent webcams into their laptops, there would be less of a need for this.
They’re going to put iPhone quality cameras to sell you cheap skates. I can see why they’re not motivated to do this. Why not use the incredible camera already on your phone? Seems better than adding $500 to the price of the laptop.

It is possibly going to be top heavy. Again, Apple has probably thought of this; but reach for something on the other side of the screen, perhaps nudging the camera/mount and just maybe If the Gods aren’t smiling on you -knock everything over.

Or you manage to knock your camera (ahem, expensive iPhone) on to the floor. And you don’t have Applecare or it expired.

Tom, who really doesn’t care about being seen in 720p

I hope someone makes a mount for us plebeians that still have a non-Magsafe iPhone. My iPhone 11 is going strong.

Heck I wonder if I could adapt one of the mounts that came with the iSight. One of them was Magnetic.

There are a coupe of things I find incorrect in your statement.

The improved 1080P webcam was released almost ten months ago.

There have been complaints with the Studio Display webcam; also the 13" MBP webcam because it's the old webcam. But not really the new laptop webcam.

Apple will release Continuity Camera in a couple of months, not now, with MacOS Ventura.

Apple has been demoing new features in beta ever since WWDC so to me the timing is coincidental and only bad optics if you are cynical.

Apple doesn't set the price because Belkin makes it. Apple made the bumper.

I had and returned the iPhone 4, but I don't see this as the same thing.

That's like saying that Apple should admit that the M1 SoC was a mistake because the M2 SoC is an improvement.

Continuity camera is great for people who have Mac minis, Mac Studios, MacBooks in clamshell, hooked up to external displays, etc.

All good points. I’m just telling you why people are reacting how they are. It all makes sense but it still seems somehow a little ridiculous in this particular implementation.

This is quite possibly a dumber idea than the Magic Mouse charging port. It looks terrible. This never would have passed the Jobs/Ive smell test.

Suggestion: Integrate a fold-out MagSafe puck into the lid of the notebook so the phone can look like it belongs there, allowing it to rotate from landscape to portrait. Use the front-facing camera and then the phone can be used as a secondary display.

Are you sure about that?

I don't need to mount it to my MBP, I need to mount it to my external display!
Yeah, I’ve been using camo to do exactly this for the past year. I use an old phone so I don’t have to keep mounting/unmounting. wish I had a decent mount (I use a gooseneck gripper) but am too lazy to design+print one. I have the LG ultra fine apple used to sell on their web site.

This thing is a monstrosity.

I thought the charging port of the Magic Mouse or the Apple Pencil charging on the iPad’s lightning or the AirPods max case was the low of apple but this beats them all.

That horrendous phone holder will also ruin the rubber gasket that runs on the edge of the display too in the long run.

If someone else came up with this we would have memes all over the internet but because it’s apple doing it everyone is praising it. Shocking.

A couple of problems.

This would only work for a short period of time because battery on iPhone will drain.

The latch on the mount could damage the case of the laptop

The mount seems easy to fall off.

I think a much more elegant solution is to embed magsafe magnets into the display panel, and the phone can attach to it, leaving only the cameras out.

That could have challenges on thickness, magnetic interference, etc. but there are already magnets in macbooks so I don’t think that’s much our of reach.

You know that you can charge the Pencil regularly with the included cable and adapter right? The iPad charging was a nice extra incase you didn't bring your cable.

But since you think that was dumb, what's your proposed solution for charging the pencil if you forgot your cable?

Hardly anyone puts decent webcams in their computers for the simple matter that video conferencing apps wouldn't take advantage of it. A 4K camera, for instance, is wasted since conferencing apps will stick your picture in a tiny box where resolution doesn't matter. Most PC's will still give you crappy 720p cameras and might give you a 1080p camera.

The biggest reason for crappy cameras is the thickness of laptop lids. Cameras need depth, which is the reason Apple couldn't get beyond 720p for the longest time with the tapered lids too thin to put anything more than those crappy 720p cameras. Once they evened out laptop lids and removed the taper, making the tops slightly thicker, that allowed them to put 1080p cameras in them. If you want a 4K camera, you'll probably need a lid that's twice as thick. iPhones are really thick when compared to laptop lids and can therefore have much better cameras.

If you're taking photos with the front of your monitor and need 4K, then that's just weird.

There's no way to build an iPhone-level camera with multiple lenses into a Macbook lid. This is for people who rely on videoconferencing/remote work and streamers/vloggers. If you just pop on a FaceTime call once in a while, the built in camera is fine. This mount takes your video quality and features to another level.
Don't you love how people bash things because it doesn't work for them or they don't understand the limits of today's technology?
