YouTube's Apple TV app is crashing and causing some issues for users when they try to exit out of the app, according to user reports online.

General-YouTube-Feature-1.jpg

On Twitter and Reddit, users report that when trying to exit out of the YouTube app, their Apple TV becomes unresponsive and shows a black screen. The issue begins when users press the back button on their Apple TV remote, which then causes the YouTube app to ask users to confirm they wish to exit the app. Doing so causes the screen to go black, with users having no choice but to force close the app or disconnect and replug their Apple TV. To force close an app on Apple TV, double press the TV button on the remote, find the desired app, and swipe up on the trackpad.

YouTube has remained relatively quiet on the issue, telling frustrated users on Twitter to try deleting and reinstalling the app, despite those steps doing little to resolve the issue. Users affected by the bug are advised to make sure their YouTube app and Apple TV are up to date.

I could have sworn that one of the things your app "can't do" is stop you from exiting the app with a "Are you sure you want to exit?" prompt. Apple wouldn't approve your app if you did that.

Maybe the rules changed and/or I'm wrong, but I can't think of another app that stops me from exiting with a question like that.

Not sure why Google is so insistent on stop people from just quitting their apps. Pretty sure Google Chrome also hijacks CMD + Q or CMD + W to display a stupid little message asking if you're sure.

Quitting macOS apps and using then back button are interactions that typically behave the same way in every other app, breaking this expected behaviour just serves to annoy users.

I still have an older version of the YT app, the one where the app still does frame rate matching.

A lot of weird things got into the youtube updates recently.

For one if you do a youtube search and watch a video from the search list, you can never edit or get back to the search criteria bar... you have to go all the way out to the main youtube menu and re-select search.
I thought I was the only one. Drives me crazy.

Using an old, IR Apple Remote and hitting Menu rather than Back on the Siri Remote seems to work marginally better

I often get audio playing from the last video I watched when returning to the app. As I scroll through the video list it continues to pay in the background until I either exit or select another video

Same.

Actually chrome doesn’t and has no feature for it at all.
Only if the webpage has some forms filled out will it ask.
I have to use a script on a page to stop accidentally closing Chrome.

The app is telling you that there’s better things to do with your time than waste it on garbage YouTube content

That app is buggy in general. If I turn off my Apple TV with the YouTube app running it sometimes causes the Apple TV to turn back on with a black screen or the video audio will play in the background with the YouTube menu. I usually have to force quit the app and relaunch it.
