I’m waiting for Nomad’s new wireless pad, the Base Station Pro, where you’ll be able to charge any combination of devices anywhere on the mat.

Everything about Nomad products is first class. Use the case on my 11 Pro and their cables.

There are a few. Some of the better ones from Baseus (which I mentioned on another forum too).

This one is about US$24 and I've bought quite a lot of their stuff in the past from AliExpress. The quality is superb and the products work great.

I used to be a CB radio operator. At that time antennas with 7.5 watts high frequency output power were considered to be harmful to health, you learned that you had to keep a safe distance to them. Interesting, how the commerce overrides precautionary measures (which served the protection of humans).

Mobile phones transmit with up to 1 W on the 1800 and 2100 MHz network, with up to 2 W on the 900 MHz network. The transmission power is automatically adjusted by the mobile phone to the reception conditions.
Not just to save battery power, but mainly for health reasons.

For Apple, the proof could have been more critical than for any chinese mayfly company if lawsuits were filed. Apple is smart...

16 spools are not a 16 cylinder engine in a car. Wireless remains a slow energy transfer method and therefore always inferior to 2 physical cables.

But is this a place-anywhere charger or simply two standard Qi chargers “glued” to the right and left of an Apple Watch charger?

Wireless charging mats are such a gimmick. You can’t use your phone normally whilst charging like you can if it’s plugged in and if you have a case on your phone like most, it won’t charge properly (if at all).

Apple messed up announcing the AirPower they couldn’t get working but overall I don’t think it’ll ever beat wired charging.

I’m happy to come back to this in a few years and admit I was wrong, but in 2020 (feels weird writing that...) I’m definitely right.

I'd MAYBE spend 20 bucks for the "convenience" of not having to physically plug in my phone, but the reality is, this pad can only be one place at a time, so not sure how convenient it is when I can have $5 cables conveniently placed all around the house (or at work).

These whole wired vs wireless charging people crack me up. Wireless is for convenience. You toss it on the wireless mat before you go to bed and you wake up to a charged phone. It's not for quick charging, it's not for using the phone while you charge, it's for convenience and less wear and tear on the charging port.

And then I'll wait another couple of months to see if these don't catch fire. Apple cancelling it after probably throwing obscene amounts of money at it trying to make it work must say something about the safety and feasibility of these airpower-like products.
I agree and the one with the woolen upholstery textile is the one I would be more concerned with.

Perfect for the new iPhone 5.

This would make a nice super remote replacement for the Apple TV.

Apple has proven to be smart again. The 'AirPower' hype is over, most people know the pros and cons, and few companies will make even fewer dollars. File closed...

Was there really ever ‘AirPower hype’ to begin with? I don’t suspect there ever was. Reason being, how many consumers actually even knew what the AirPower even was, [aside from whatever was briefly mentioned on the keynote.] The only hype for the AirPower ever had, was on a tech site like this, otherwise it was nonexistent to the average consumer.

I'm probably going to wait until next autumn. By then we'll have reviews, know whether or not it is burning down people's houses, and there will probably be Black Friday sales.

I'd be surprised if they actually pulled it off and it works well. If they do, then that doesn't bode well for Apple's team, which should have access to top-tier engineers and large budgets. But I guess it just takes one person to make a breakthrough. I think if this thing actually works Apple will snap them up.

Is it for convenience or did you mean laziness? How inconvenient is it to plug a lightning connector into an iPhone or Airpods charging case?

I have a cheap 3rd party Apple watch charging stand on my nightstand and I "toss" my Apple watch onto it when I go to bed. I have a $5 lightning cable I plug into my phone. It's literally magnitudes less work than brushing my teeth!

Couldn't find the white one but did find a black version on Amazon, although it won't handle two iphones. 3 1/2 stars though.

One could argue that convenience is the same as laziness. Use what you prefer, who cares what anyone else wants to charge their phone with?

Agreed, also for people who are on the go a lot. I may get up from my desk a dozen times a day or more, and a number of times I'm on the phone. It's super convenient to be able to just drop my phone on the charging pad, and then grab it and go without having to plug/unplug constantly.

That's no longer true. Advances in wireless charging have improved to the point where it can be faster than a wired charge.

Is it more detrimental to the battery over time? Idk. That's not the argument you made. I'm refuting your slow energy transfer method claim. It ain't true anymore.

Wow, 180$ charger. I’ll use cables for that crazy price.

I have two wireless chargers. One from Anker that sits on my desk and props the phone up at an agle, the other is a flat surface model made by Samsung on my night stand. Both were relatively inexpensive.

The desktop charger is simply a means to "top off" charge my phone between meetings and field work. The one at home is for overnight charging.

No way I'm paying $180 for a phone charger. I picked up a really nice portable battery that will charge just about anything from dead on a single charge for about $70 a year ago, and it works just fine when on the go.

Also to add, I'm a big fan of wireless. Plugs wear out, pulling them out, pushing them back in. Think of the number of destroyed lightning cables at the plug.

And then you have your car. My BMW has a Qi charger built in and it's brilliant. No ugly, lose cables hanging around....

Where did you get your case-related impressions? My wife and I both use fairly thick cases on our phones, and wirelessly charge every night with no issues. Yes, you don't use your phone while charging, but you really shouldn't do that no matter what if you don't want to damage lightning cables either. If I need to use my phone in the evening while it's charging, I just pick it up and use it. No need to detach cables. When done, just place right back down and it keeps going.
