that chrome bezel isnt just for looks
its like an exoskeleton
if the phone falls on the side or corner, or even the back
you may have a few scratches. but the phone will be shielded

if it falls and takes a blow right on the glass, you may not be so lucky

I dropped my iPhone 3g about 2 hours after getting it onto a loose stone car-park .... was fine

I'm gonna get a case for it some time, probably gonna ask for one on my Chirstmas list.

This is a £360 iPhone, not a £70 Sony Ericsson.

The fact that your phone received minimal damage is due more to luck than the structural and material strength of the iPhone.

Care to try another drop or 3?

Somehow I've managed to drop my 3G about 5 times the past week, totally naked except for a screen protector. And were talking real drops, with bounces. Not a scratch, ding, or anything. Each time my heart paused, I bent over, picked it up, scoured it for damage, and it's fine. Pretty impressive. I dropped my 1st gen only once and got a nice ding on the back and a scratch on the screen. Go figure.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

My favorite thing: when I drop my phone I don't have to search for a battery cover and the battery itself, just pick it up and go. It's more embarrasing when u have to get on hands and knees to search for parts that flew off!!

Edit: add stylus to parts to search for

I second that along with the OP's "ZOMG." Must we resort to text message abbreviations when using actual computers? IDTS!

What's more amazing is the fact that rather than reply to the thread with something productive you would prefer to quote people who DID post and make smart comments.

Must we resort to being so rude, for no apparent reason?

dropped mine naked -__-
no cracks and no scratches
I was very lucky
It just landed perfectly 180 flat on the ground....

I HATE the sound of the impact though =(
I'm going to get a casing now.

I purchased a 2g the first week they came out and dropped it on the asphalt a few days after purcahse. It did get scratched but was OK. Still, to scratch the new iPhone that I paid over $500.00 for was devastating. With my new 3g, I dropped it from about 10 feet on to concrete (don't ask) it would have smashed into pieces I am sure if it was not for the fantastic case. Just a scrape on the case and I picked up the phone and continued the conversation.

+1 on a good case will save the phone.

i infact have dropped my phone on several occasions sometimes trying to catch it but only flinging it farther then it would have gone had i let it drop

i dont think iphones are as breakable as you make it out to be

just because alot of people post the downside to the demise of the iphone doesnt mean that every single iphone is a lime iphone (gimpy breakable iphone)

Dropped mine once on a tile floor, screamed like a girl, had a case on it so it was fine, but i still screamed like a girl hahah, Currently i have a speck toughskin but i just ordered an otterbox defender. I work in a strictly outside job so i have to be careful

Sorry, but I've actually dropped mine and ruined it...this is without reaching for it and inadvertently flinging it further. I'm talking about a simple drop.

So, yeah, IMO, the phone is as breakable as I'm making it out to be. If the whole face is made out of glass, its certainly not going to be as strong as the back of the phone, unless the glass is bullet-proof (it ain't).

Drop it flat on its face (or better yet, on a corner) and find out for yourself, if you're that confident.

Just be mindful when you use the phone. Don't try to do other things while using it unless you have a headset and your hands are free.

I get the OMG, but what is ZOMG? Zombies? Zipper? Zeus?
1. zomg

zOMG is a varient of the all-too-popular acronym "OMG", meaning "Oh My God".

The "z" was originally a mistake while attempting to hit the shift key with the left hand, and type "OMG"

Also used in all-caps, 'ZOMG' is generally used in a sarcastic manner, more often than not a humiliating fasion. It is also used as a device for stating the obvious.
"zOMG! you r teh winz!!one!!eleven!"

I dropped mine while drunk onto a cement sidewalk.. thankfully earlier that day I had bought a rubber case for it and it made it fine.

Scary though..

Sounds similar to the word 'hella'

i have the agent18 case. i think its way better than any gel case. i dropped mine a few days ago from about 4 feet up onto a cement floor. the case broke apart into its two pieces. all the shock was absorbed by the case and distributed to the snap connectors instead of the ipod touch. just snapped it back together and it was fine. (but my heart still had to recover)
