Have you ever wished your iPhone displayed Safari in portrait mode while holding your iPhone horizontally, e.g., when lying down on either side of your body. Well, read on. In order to lock your iPhone in portrait mode, all you have to do is exit to home screen, turn the iPhone horizontally and finally enter Safari (or any app for that matter) and voilà! Your iPhone is displaying Safari in portrait mode while you're holding it horizontally.

    :)

Edit: here are some photos to back up my finding:

Now I challenge you to reproduce all of the above in 2.2.1 and 3.0. See, doesn't work. Because it's a new feature in 3.1b.

    Hopefully this will be optional.

I can imagine whether I set this on or off it'll still annoy me!

I'd be much happier with a rotation lock, maybe in the status bar at the top that is always accessible.

probably one of the main reasons i jailbreak is for the rotation lock toggle. incredibly useful and works for every app that can rotate.

It's normal. Has been around for ages. Simply open safari, then turn iphone to portrait, but completely upside down. will show the safari as landscape.

No need to exit safari etc.

I like this bug. :) I hope it stays, or Apple makes it an option toggle.

You could do this with a plugin for SBSettings for ages..

    Of course, JB is needed.

I don't care about the status bar at the top always being visible because space is already limited, however, a rotation lock is a must. I mean, Amazon's Kindle did this on the 2nd update of their app, why can't apple get their **** together?

I guarantee you guys this is not a bug nor is it an old feature. When have you ever been able to hold your iPhone horizontally without the coverflow activating while in the iPod app? Never! However this is now possible in 3.1 beta.

I'm on 2.2.1 and when I open Safari holding the iPhone sideways, it switches to landscape.

Just tried this on 3.0 on my 3G...
    doesn't work.

Hope it stays though, I always listen to music before I go to sleep and the darn coverflow when I open the iPod pisses me off.
