I'm on with Intl tech chat now. I doubt there's a snowball's chance in hell I'll get an unlock.

As you can see from the thread, I tried Intl via phone earlier to no avail. From what I've read elsewhere, you have to talk to tech support, not customer support- the customer support people don't know anything. Try that 866 number I posted above if you can't get em to do it for you.

Initially gave them my old AT&T number and last 4 of SSN. I transferred the number to google voice and closed the account a year ago when I moved overseas.

IMEI was also required.

I bought my iphone by paying no commitment fee and i've never activated the at&t sim card i got with it. I've always used with ultrasn0w unlock.

Do you think this will be a problem?

Almost there!

On phone right now, she took my imei and now I am waiting on technical support to complete the process. She said they had high call volume and it would be 10 plus minutes.

Done on the phone, waiting on iTunes restore to enable the unlock.

Rather I wait for the tech rep, I took her(customer rep) word that she will call me back once she got a hold of tech, so I don't have to wait on the phone.

Called att this morning, no idea what they are doing

They can unlock but need to summit a case number. 1 hour on the phone to get that done. Now need to wait. Will try again durning the week. If anyone get there phone unlocked , write down what you did, or said

9:43: On the line now, they asked imei, they are verifying iPhone's history... we'll see what happens!

10:00: They are preparing my ticket... what does that mean?

10:19: Call took 36 minutes, they told me my unlock would be available on april 16!!!!!

10:23: Important: if anyone bought their phones from eBay, they will need to find a proof of purchase. Having bought my phone on eBay I told them I didn't have that information, however, they seem to have accepted apple's warranty website as a valid proof of purchase, as it says, "Valid Purchase Date". So if any eBay buyers want to get their phones unlocked, tell the representative to check apple's website for the purchase information.

Unlock

I just got off the phone with AT&T. The young lady I spoke to was very nice, she tried to help me. The problem is the IMEI number I have is not the one she has. I dropped my new iPhone 4 three weeks after I got it and I payed Apple $199 to replace the screen (a.k.a a new phone). Now she is telling me that the new phone started a new 2 year deal. She was not sure what to do now. She spoke to a supervisor, but they had to clue. She told me that she would find out and call be back in 3 days. All I know is I am a loyal Apple owner and have been if AT&T for years, they better work this out.......

info: Please wait for a chat representative to respond.
info: You are now chatting with 'Alex Baker'
Alex Baker: Hello Mr. XXXX, I will be glad to assist you with your concern for unlocking your device today.
Me: Thanks
Alex Baker: I do apologize but until the 2 year contract is fulfilled the device is not eligible to be unlocked. *The date your device will be eligible to be unlocked is 7/5/2012.
Me: What if I pay an early termination fee?
Alex Baker: If the early termination fee is paid then the device will be eligible to unlocked.
Me: Ok, what would my fee be?
Alex Baker: The early termination fee is $115.00.
Me: Would I still be an AT&T customer if I pay the ETF or does my account close?
Alex Baker: I would need to refer you to our billing department to answer that question Mr. XXXC. *Would you like to chat with a billing representative?
Me: Sure. Thanks.
Alex Baker: Is there anything else I can assist you with today before I transfer the chat?
Me: No thank you
info: Please wait while I transfer the chat to the appropriate chat representative. *Please be patient as someone will be with you shortly.
info: You are now chatting with 'Wendy OBrien'
Wendy OBrien: Just one moment while I bring up your account, I will be happy to assist you.
Wendy OBrien: How may I help you with your early termination fee questions?
Me: Id prefer not to terminate but it appears in order to unlock my iPhone before 7/5, I have to. My question is once I pay the ETF does my account close.
Wendy OBrien: yes it will.
Me: so I would no longer be an AT&T customer if I pay the ETF?
Wendy OBrien: correct.
Me: So, you'd rather lose me as a customer than allow me to unlock my phone 3 months early?
Wendy OBrien: one moment I need to clarify the options for you.
Wendy OBrien: Sorry I am trying to get some clarification on unlocking the iphone.
Me: Ok, I understand this is new. Thanks.
Wendy OBrien: While I am waiting on assistance I did check the systems and we do not have the unlock code.
Me: From what I'm hearing I believe my phone's IMEI has to be sent to Apple for the unlock.
Me: By AT&T
Wendy OBrien: Yes I am just getting the information now.
Wendy OBrien: The options include paying full price or cancelling and paying the etf.
Me: But if I cancel and pay the etf i am no longer a customer, so AT&T is telling me they would rather lose me than allow me a 3 month early upgrade, after I've been a good customer for 3+ years?
Me: Not upgrade, unlock
Wendy OBrien: Sorry that is how apple has outlined the regulations for the unlock codes.
Me: Wow. Ok I guess it's time to switch carriers.
Wendy OBrien: Sorry about that.
Me: Is there someone I can call to file a complaint?
Wendy OBrien: 1 800 331 0500
Me: Ok thanks.
info: Your chat transcript will be sent to XXXXX at the end of your chat.
Me: Thanks for the info.
Wendy OBrien: Have a great day!

My question is do all you people who think you need your phone unlocked really need to do this on the 1st day this is introduced?
Really?

Not to mention Im pretty sure very few of you actually need the phone unlocked at all. It just seem like most you want to stir up *****.

It took me four different phone calls (via Skype as I am abroad) to find someone who knew what was going on with unlocking iphones. The first three people simply told me to keep calling back until I got someone who knew what I was talking about.

Once I was connected with an agent that knew about the unlocking it was very easy. I gave her my IMEI, she verified that I was eligible and in a 2-3 days I will be good to go.

As someone who just moved abroad this news came at the perfect time. I had to downgrade to an unlocked 3GS to use over here and it pales in comparison after being so used to an iphone 4.

Just keep calling until you find someone who knows what is going on!

Actually yes, as my flight for China leaves at 8:30am tomorrow. I am tired of using my old samsung flip phone while in China and my 3GS firmware was not unlock able via jailbreak.

Well your still SOL, it take 2-3 days to get it done once you find someone who knows whats what.

any luck with craigslist purchased phones?

anyone have any luck getting an unlock who is not an att customer and purchased thier phone off craigslist or ebay?

at&t car claims it's a hoax?

i just called to get my old 3gs unlocked. because my plan is linked to my company's business group for a discount i got right through to business technical support. she said "we are not unlocking iphones--what you've heard is not true." i asked if it was a hoax and she said "unfortunately, yes"

did i just get someone uninformed? or is it really all just BS?

I wonder what genius thought Easter Sunday was a good time for AT&T to get flooded with calls about unlocking? Hopefully AT&T will publish something official about unlocking the iphone, and the unlocking problems will be resolved in a few more days.

Just got off the phone with service rep. Said I had an iphone 4 off contract that I want to unlock. She verified my closed account was in good standing and asked for my IMEI and said the computer says my device in not eligible for unlock. She seemed to be looking for a code to give me, so seems like she doesn't know what she's doing. But since it was ineligible, she is going to create a case and I should hear back in 1-2 weeks.

I think I'm gonna try callin again.

that is awesome and they didn't say you would need the original sim or anything?

Guys, call the 1-800-331-0500 (select Technical support from the prompt) and not the customer service. The CSR knows nothing.

They ask your IMEI and will send an email to you. That email asks you to just backup and restore the phone and it should unlock it then. So, they need you to restore the phone. Strange.
